Wasta is a part of middle eastern culture in the same way that bribery is in the East and political donations are in the West.

In my opinion, I think we are living in a 3rd world contries (middle east), with some remains of bureacracy. I think Wasta for a noble thing, like for example to help you get a right that was taken from you, wasta for an old lady to get her pension cheque that is stuck in bureaucracy files, wasta to help a poor or a weak person,is not something bad. What is really a shame, when you use Wasta to get a privelege that you do not deserve, steal a chance of a job when you are not qualified, open a mechanic shop in a residential area and disturbing people, just because you know some people, bluntly moving out of the line to let some of your friends finish your papers infront of the whole line of people who are waiting patiently,...etc etc.

I also think that this phenomena is all over the globe, but with different degree, western people call it perhaps " pulling some strings". Perhaps it is part of corruption, and corruption is literally EVERYWHERE, but with different degrees.
