one cause maybe... is lack of foreign investors here... in some countries... when you say... "I used to work in Bahrain" or "I used to work in Qatar", you will suddenly hear... "Where in the world is that place"... i experienced that... not once.

Tallg is rght- Qatar grows Brocoli, you get it 10 a kg when the improted one is from 20 to 30 QR per kg :)

The major reason is that many stuff has to transit Dubai and come to DOha , since its a minor port and mother vessels comes to Dubai and transit goods.

jasminejasmine...we are only looking on views why Qatar is so different from the others... what are the possible causes that tends Qatar to this progressing path.

You are SO right! In the Uk we couldn't even afford to smoke! It's about 40QR a pack of 20 there. the fluctuation in price works both ways. Sometimes they have UK imports in Megamart for a few riyals, must have been an admin error but you won't hear me complaining!

One last thought...I come from a nation that has regulated and monitered everything, including our thoughts. Yesterday a guy was fired from his job because he was having a private conversation while on a meal break and happened to discuss religion with his colleague. I think this is a dangerous path to follow. At the moment Qatar, despite it's quirks, is largely a safe and happy place to live. Once you let the authorities worry that everything is too expensive, or too dangerous, we will all leave because the only way to regulate society in a controlling manner is to TAX US ALL TO DEATH!

By getsevilla• 15 Apr 2009 10:45
getsevilla

is there anything such as Regulations Commission here in Qatar?

By getsevilla• 15 Apr 2009 10:37

would there be... an obvious sense of overpricing everywhere nowadays in Qatar... this should be controlled...

To put it in an equation: in Qatar it is cheaper to drive a big car and smoke than to get a decent university education compared to Germany.

Qatar is cheap: fuel = 0.80 QR (Germany: 1.40 Euro!)

cigarettes: 5 - 6 QR (Germany: 5 - 6 Euro!)

Education: 60.000 QR (Germany: 0!)

You see where the preferences are.

By tallg• 15 Apr 2009 10:18

No, it doesn't mean that. How does the price of stuff make rich people richer?

By getsevilla• 15 Apr 2009 10:16

so it means... the rich will be more richer... and poor will become poorer... make sense.

cost of living used to be cheap in this country, we use to rent a 3 bedroom flat in Matar Qadeem for only 3ooo/- but due to economic growth and population demands....inflation came...

hey! Been here since 1997, and I can confidently say that Qatar has improved soooo muuch

I cant give you a educated reply on this coz i come from a village and never went to school, but i can say that NOTHING is grown in Qatar as far as i know, everything is imported. With the current world crisis, exporting countries are hiking up their prices too, so that they can earn foreign exchange, its only logical to find increase prices on everything. Also there is no such thing as price regulation here or if there is no one checks.

Qatar wasn't the most expensive when I got here just last August, even compared to Dubai - probably only the accommodation was more expensive.

Of course goods are imported. Where else are they going to get them from?

And what basic needs do you want them to invest in, that will directly help you?

By getsevilla• 15 Apr 2009 10:06
getsevilla

Would that mean... nobody is investing in Qatar when it comes to basic needs... seem to be more on oil explorations... and it means as well... we are taking imported goods...
