I am planning to take my family to Malaysia for vacation. Can somebody recommend me where is the best place to take family? I have 2 children age 7 and 4 so I am looking into going somewhere kids can enjoy. Should I plan my own trip or buy a package through an agent?

UK, take a look here: http://www.asiarooms.com/malaysia/kuala_lumpur/the_nomad_sucasa.html

Sucasa (From 69 US$ (incl. taxes & service charges)) and sister hotel Micasa are both cheap n cheerful. Located on Jalan Ampang near the US and UK embassy.

I stayed at Micasa many years ago. I learned my first Bahasa words there from the barman ;o)

Hi mrT,

buying a package from agent may restrict your option, and you may not have the flexibility. (may be you can have a discussion with agent to understand their T&C)

malaysia is a beautiful country with lots of interesting places to visit, and getting a hotel is not at all difficult task, you can also book hotels room online (everybody knows it anyway). few of the interesting places in malaysia to visit would be:

-----mountains and highland resorts-------

- Genting Highland (city of entertainment, its a very cool place located around 50 km northeast of Kuala Lumpur at 2000 meter above sea level )

- Cameroon highland (the best place to escape the city's heat in Malaysia, cactus garden and bee farm would be a place of interest for kids)

- other hill resort are fraser hill and bukit tinggi (though m not quite sure about it coz i have never been there)

------beaches and islands-----

- Langkawi Island (one of the best place and island i have ever been to, easiest way to reach here is thru a flight from KL, places of interest would be eagle square, langkawi cable car, cenang beach, btw its a duty free island ), its a great place for beach life with lots of sight seeing.

- other beaches and islands to visits are

- pangkor island

- tioman island

- penand island

- perhentian island

these islands are warm, calm and with crystal clear water, it offers various water based activities like snorkeling, diving, and has been a favorite spots with expats in malaysia and as well as with locals.

btw, i haven't mentioned anything about KL (short for Kuala Lumpur) coz m sure must have already gathered info abt it.

but still, taking a hop on hopp off bus (specially made for tourist) is a gud option to see the places quickly,

-places in KL: batu caves, petronas twin towers (KLCC), KL tower (it offers the best view of KL), china town, bintang walk, and do visit Putrajaya, its newly built federal territory, putra mosque which is built across putrajaya lake is one of the most marvelous architecture in malaysia.

i hope this will help.

have a great vacation.

Cheers,

Zuha

Qatar Airways package for me to Malaysia was not bad back at 2004..but I would recommend that you just guarantee a hotel with a fair price in KL the capital before u get there to see around, they have nice zoo, you can go to Genting mountain resort to enjoy the kids and visit the few other parks that I heared of but didn't have time to visit. Penang Island was great for me with sea activities , and heared that langakawi Island resorts even better.. so if you don't mind a little more effort here and there for reservations and stuff like that then no need for a package I guess. regards

on KL, get a copy of the KL map with landmarks and monorail system, and hopping from one monorail to the other will be so easy

Loveable - Last year I did KL, Malacca, Penang and Pulau Tioman in almost 3 weeks :o)

Tip one: Express trains are bl**dy slow - take a bus instead

Tip two: Taxis in Penang are few and far between. If you find a private cab, take his card and use him all the time.

Tip three: Malacca is flat - walk! it's a very compact town and you can see all you need to see on foot.

Tip four: In KL get a monorail pass and keep it topped up - by far the best way to get around.

The rest you can get from guide books or Wiki.
