I dont know much about Indian culture and there arent many Indians where I come from but I read this article (http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/World-News/Gandhi-US-Auction-Of-Leaders...) today and could work out why people where upset.

Seen as there are fair few friendly Indian people in Qatar can anyone explain why selling Gandhi's possessions is a problem ?

They're still stuck with the caste system. It only takes somebody outside of India to understood Gandhi more than within it's own native land.

Oh. And to the original title: those are one of the first four words the Indians taught me of their language. So how can it be so offensive if it's also the same people who taught me those words?

I dont know much about India but if it wasnt so underdeveloped (said as sensitively as possible) there wouldnt be so much of an exodus from the country. Buying figher jets wont help the improvished migrating and robbing their own country of its future.

Surely this makes elementum sense ?

The thing which irritates me the most is that the person who was having it before was demanding 5% of Indian GDP to be allocated for poverty eradication and saying that Indians are spending too much for buying fighters and weapons.

India is not even spending 2% of its GDP for defense and has very poor infrastructure near the Chinese border.

reports say that if a soldier needs to go to the border from the nearest road, he will have walk continuously for 2 days.

The terrain is also very harsh.

Neighbors of India such as china are spending 5% of their GDP.

India needs to ramp up it defense expenditure and indigenous development or they are going to suffer a harsh defeat to china similar to the one in 1962.

HE HAS NO RIGHT WHATSOEVER IN TELLING HOW MUCH INDIA HAS TO SPEND AND FOR WHAT.

please apologize me for the caps

Newtoqatar2,

Gandhi was a personality whose life and teachings were valued not just by India as a nation but to many other nations such as South Africa and global personalities as Einstein. I can promise you, if you take time to read more of the teachings of Gandhi, also called Mahatma (meaning- The Great Soul), you would find peace within yourself and confident enough to tackle all the issues arising in this world, just using his teachings and most importantly why 1.5+ billion of India alone keep him in the pedestal as "Father of the Nation". And again why India as a family would object to such trifling or commercialisation of personal items of the head of the family.

As for Samael, from your past posts too, I seriously believe you should seek professional help for your attitude in public. Humor as expense of someone else's sentiments, cannot be condoned even with the Sri Lankan Flag signature.

'Gandhi' was 'renowned' for his humor, yes. But he is more than renowned, he is admired and respected around the world for the person he was. It is a common courtesy followed around the world that you do not show great souls of the past in ways that attempt to trivialise them.

Again, humor is a very subjective thing. In a multi cultural environment, it is always a good thing to consider sensitivities.

Peace.

Winn, please explain in great detail why it is offensive.

Ghandi was renound for having an excellent sense of humour. Shame those who follow his teaching today don't.

I really dont care for you petty bourgeoisie comments about the US. The US people are the finest people in the world. Not only are the citizens of the US the most tolerent and welcoming but like NO OTHER country are color blind!!!!!! I think people should start to pay much more respect to the US. Without sounding brazen, can you see the population of where you come from electing someone as radical as President Obama. I think NOT.

I am at a complete loss for words. Is it considered sacrilegious to mention that persons name in the Indian/Arab custom ? If so I truely and sincerely apologize. I didnt mean to insult anyone at all. I had no idea that his name was held so high. I guess thats why selling his personal possessions is such an issue.

Seen as I've been caught out by this custom - which I must admit nobody on Google has ever mentioned before - is there some on qatariliving that I can find out more about the local customs ?

that makes sense alexa...i mean why get so touchy now that that they're being auctioned? they've been owned privately by a non-indian for quite a while...and to add to all that he proposed returning them to india if the government will allocate more funds towards helping the poor which seemed like a noble gesture. i guess it's good that an indian bought them at least to quell this unwaranted emotional response from indians.

no offense to anyone here, but if it really mattered to you that they not belong to someone outside india, they wouldn't have been there in the first place.

Your asking the "nice" indians in Qatar to answer your question and yet you seem to have rilled everyone. I would suggest you Edit the post out of respect to everyone and especially to the memory of Gandhi who is a legend to all not only Indian People.

As for the question your asking : what is all the fuss about selling his possessions.. Why should anyone in the states have these valuable items in the first place and be in a position to play bidding games with them. While to people like you these may seem insignificant.. they are a nations treasure... some things are priceless and they do not have to be gold or diamonds in order to be precious.

I will make it easy for you, instead of asking who Gandhi is and why people are making a fuss.. simple go to google and type in Gandhi.. and Voila... feast your eyes on all that you can see and learn.

Knowledge is a virture and ignorance is a shame.. do not allow yourself to be ignorant.
