Although I respect it is insulting to those who have died in the war. I think it is best to keep it in context.

The program looked as if was a comedy chat show? For want of a better term.

It all seemed heavily scripted and contrived to me. In other words, like most comedians they wanted the shock value.

In England we have a TV show called Mock the Week. Similar to that and to be honest all it does is mock, anybody and everybody. Some of it is so funny you cry laughing and sometimes I have cringed and wondered how the hell they got away with it.

These people are just moronic commedians. They insulted others to. However, I know that is the not the same as insulting troops that have just come home from a horrible war.

My thoughts are my own, but I doubt my Mum would agree with some of them.

a peon is usually an office boy, an attendant, or an orderly, a person kept around for odd jobs

peón has also a range of meanings related to unskilled or semi-skilled work or manual labour, whether referring to a low-status wage earner in a variety of rural and urban industries (especially a day labourer or a servant); a peasant; a bullfighter's assistant, or, historically, someone subject to forms of unfree labour.

a peon is an "unprivileged user"—a person without special privileges on a computer system.

Pick and choose the peon you want to be;)

Nobody likes a policeman. That's the real reason everyone hates America.

I once watched an excellent documentary on American foreign policy called Team America, World Police. It was made using puppets so that foreigners (who are not as intelligent as Americans) could understand.

As a Norwegian, I found this very helpful and particularly liked the very helpful maps which showed America's position in the world and how far every where else was from it. I had no idea that America was so much bigger than Canada for example.

Us Norwegians are generally insular people. We don't much like foreigners or foreign countries that's why we didn't join the EU. Consequently, we don't know much or care much about the rest of the world although some of us have been to Sweden and Denmark.

In finishing I would just like to say that as a result of seeing that excellent documentary Team America World Police, I have now changed my mind and appreciate what a wonderful job the US is doing for the world.

Thank you America from your Norwegian friend.

Fox News is not news...it is entertainment for the mentally challenged. Rupert Murdoch knows he can make more money catering to these type of people than to the progressives.

I guarantee you that if Rupert Murdoch had thought he could make more money with a liberal slanted network he would have...but that market was already saturated:) Supply and demand...unfortunately about half of America falls into his network's target demographics.

If all the other networks went conservative, I bet Fox News would be the first to take a liberal slant....it's all about the money.

american news in general are just completely rediculous; they talk about the most random and irrelevant stuff for several minutes i.e. some dog saving a baby kitten somewhere in Arkansas. And if 2000 people die in India from a flood...they cover it for three seconds. Or what about the Darfur Conflict??? Never heard about it here. Generally the news here (US) dont cover any international topics. You have to watch BBC world to stay in touch.

In my view, TV is the main reason why the general public is so ignorant about anything outside of the states. They passively get force-fed about their fears and insecurities, or they are just too distracted by bullshit tv shows to think about anything. and whats up with letting really young children watch TV for hours a day??

TV is babylon! i'm kidding. I love Family Guy, BBC Documentaries, French Cinema and so many other things. Just think one needs to be selective about TV. Got to love the internet...SO MUCH information from so many different sources. BUT its the yanks that are kind of in control of the internet...

To get back to the topic of discussion; I dont think all americans are ignorant, and i certainly dont hate them. A lot of them are just really uneducated and have a very 'conditioned mindset'. Obama will hopefully lead the states in a new direction. He is my homeboy!

It's ironic that someone should post that story about the plight of Iraq's Christians, whose community has been pretty much destroyed according to various reports.

Before the invasion, one of the stories supporting an attack was that Iraq's Christian's were solidly demanding an invasion to overthrow the tyrant. If I remember correctly, the source of this info was our much beloved Fox News, whose team of reporters stumbled on a team of Christian missionaries fleeing Iraq in the middle of the Jordanian desert. The Pastor of these South Korean missionaries was able to reveal in dramatic terms, how urgently the Christians demanded immediate American action to relieve them of Islamic oppression.

This struck me as odd, because the Christians were not particular victims of Saddam, who was not religious, and it is unusual for people to want foreign armies to invade their country, so I did some checking.

I'm a bit hazy about the exact details after all this time, but the gist of it was that the Pastor's father was head of some obscure church that had links with the US. So much so, in fact, that daddy had been a guest at the White House and had been given a certificate praising him by George W.

How odd that George's favourite TV station should stumble on the son of one of George's favourite preachers in the middle of the Jordanian desert, only for the TV to be able to exclusively reveal that all the Iraqi Christians love George and want him to invade their country.

Now look where they are ... refugee camps and Germany. Of course, the story that they wanted the invasion was a fiction designed to strengthen the pro-war views of th e religious Right. Presumably it was all orchestrated by the CIA, with Fox's connivance.

that many of our own countries (mine included) have a significant percentage of their populations who know nothing "accurate" about any other country (and a lot of inaccurate things about their own).

Education is the key as an earlier poster said - when people are educated they tend to not follow the herd blindly but to form their own (informed) opinions.

Unfortunately, this doesn't happen often enough. I can't tell you how often my compatriots make silly assumptions about my life here in the Gulf - based on heresay and assumptions - not by actually "looking it up" which is so much easier today with internet access (so long as you use reliable sources). "StormySeas said Gypsy, someone mentioned ...

Gypsy, someone mentioned that education is the key. I agree with that, but it's not up to Obama to educate the entire world.

Kids in our schools need to be taught how to plow their way through all the information that's available, how to think critically about what they've read or heard. I do believe the American education system addresses this, or tries to anyway, but unfortunately most of the rest of the world does not."

Blimey. Do you? I thought the US educational system up to school-leaver age was largely insular and self-centred, failing to give people much of an idea of the historical, social or geographical context of anything beyond US borders. We outsiders also get the impression that in large areas education is being subverted by people like the head of Oklahoma's higher-education sub-committee who has launched an inquiry into how Richard Dawkins was possibly permitted to speak at the state university. But, of course, that could be because we are suffering from misconceptions.

How much Americans understand about the world matters to all of us, given that the US has by far the most powerful military in the world and not many scruples about using it. How many lives would have been saved if the Fox News viewers had understood that there was no Saddam-Osama nexus and that there was no evidence Iraq was attempting to acquire WMD (and the proof of that was all in the public domain back in 2001 for anyone who cared to look)?

There is nothing you can do. People all over the world are affected by this type of media reporting.

A study by the University of Maryland's Program on International Policy Attitudes (PIPA) reported that Americans who relied on the Fox News Channel for their coverage of the Iraq war were the most likely to believe misinformation about the war, whatever their political affiliation may be. Those mistaken facts, the study found, increased viewers' support for the war.

As an aside, NewsCorp which owns media interests accross the globe in various guises can and does influence the way most of us percieve things. A simple example of the UK is The Sun newspaper. Like it or not, when it comes to elections, this paper can influence which party takes power.

The answer is for people to read (access) a cross section of channels / sources so as to form a truer picture for themselves. Sadly, this is unlikely.

Our idea about Americans and consequently our opinion is based mainly on Hollywood productions. With that in mind. Hollywood did ruin the reputation and image of Americans and it rarely reflect the real American society(s).

My experience with Americans was very positive and I find them very nice people (in general) and very friendly. The only negative point about them is that they mainly know America, American Media and American politicians. They are not much exposed to and aware of what happens outside their ZIP code.

I agree Britexpat.

Fox has incredibly high ratings and is extremely influential.

It is a commerical service that respondes to consumer demands.

If it didn't resonate with its viewers, it wouldn't rate, and it would change. Fox presents news the way it does because that's what its viewers demand and it voices the opinions it does because that's what people like to hear.

How could you argue that the millions of people who chose to watch Fox instead of CNN do so because they disagree with it? Would make the same argument that people watch CNN because they dislike its mostly unbiased reporting?

As in many other countries, many people are influenced by tabloid and gutter press. An example of this is The Sun newspaper in the UK.. Sky News, an affiliate of Fox often carries Fox stories in the UK and Europe.

I know and I didn't mean "you" as in "you" either Alexa. Just speaking in general terms, if we don't see things with our own eyes, or know someone from the US, Egypt, Lebanon, etc, then like or not, smart or not, we form opinions based on media.

We are very lucky by the fact that we live in a VERY mulitcultural society, so most of us know Americans who don't fit the sterotypes that Jerry Springer, Maury Povich, Fox News etc portray, or know Egyptians or Pakistanis that don't fit the sterotypes presented by the media and therefore form are own opinions.

But if you're in some small village in India and the only "experience" of America you get is from Jerry Springer, what are you going to think?

Just like the guy in this clip obviously has no experience or real knowledge of the Canadian military and what they are doing in Afghanistan and therefore is basing his opinions on tv and media that, for the most part, refers to us as pacifists.

Has nobody noticed the exact parallel between the suggestion that Obama should silence Fox to protect America's image and the Qatari/Arab obsession with the media not exposing things that are shameful for their country?

The answer to all our problems - from Fox to Al Qaeda - is education. Educate populations so that people don't live in a little bubble defined geographically by the Bible Belt or the limits of the Tora Bora mountains and intellectually by some mediaeval book, and the world would improve no end.

That's where Bush was so stupid. He thought democracy solved things and it doesn't. Education does. But Bush lives in his own bubbleful of misconceptions, too, so he couldn't see that.

Roadtester yes I have watched the BBC program "the power of nightmares". It was amazing to see in that Program how easily the Neo Con of the US can brain wash a whole country or even the western countries including my own Britain and make every believe in an proven or unseen enemy.. First they claimed that Soviet Union and communist was the biggest Evil of all time. (yet the whole world is now enjoying the financial success of China). Then after that they created a new Enemy called Al Qaeda and associated it with Evil. Amazing how Al Qaeda views and the NeoCon views are similar yet one is seen as the Good doer and the other Evil.. Yet they ideas and view are so similar..

And to conclude.. Fox news can be said to be the mouth piece for Neocon of the US...

They hate us because we have freedom of speech, and idiotic news stations like Fox are free to broadcast their views.

If I was American I would be very ashamed that my country produced such a crap propaganda service as Fox news. Therefore, I was both pleased and surprised to recently learn that I am in fact Norwegian. Although I did visit Oslo once for three days in 1993 I was not aware at that time that Norway had conferred citizenship upon me.

This information was gleaned from the excellent and highly accurate Facebook quizzes that can provide the answers to most of life's questions and dilemmas. Therefore as a Norwegian I wish to apologize for any offense caused to my Canadian friends by the crap misinformation service known as Fox News.

Just call me Tigasin. That's what I'm talking about

It's hurting because Lachy has been spending Daddy's money to set up dodgy construction companies in Dubai with his "Bum Chum" Jamie.

Vegas & hotandsticky, you know and I know who this programming caters too, but the fact of the matter is that it's broadcast internationally, and people who are ignorant of Western culture themselves take programmes like Maury Povich and Jerry Springer as the gospel truth of what Western culture is like. They also take Fox news seriously.

but i think the dislike they have is not for american people, its for the country (can say govt.)

I think there is a realization in some other countries that american people by and large (with exceptions ofcourse) are unaware or have an ignorant view of the world affairs and how american govt. policies affects them.

Fox News caters to the same mindset of Jerry Springer, Maury Povich and World Wrestling Federation fans.

It is a requirement that you must have an IQ under 80 to watch Fox. If you take Fox seriously and are unable to see how full of SH_T the program really is, give yourself a certificate of ignorance award. Your IQ is severely suffering.

you need to help Mis-Cat learn how to play nice....Checking out, not enough constructive dialogue... too bad could have been interesting, I love bashing USA media!

No banning isn't the answer. The American people becoming more media/internationally aware is the answer.

You are right. However, the fact remains that there is a certain cross section of the populace that Fox news caters for.

Banning is not the answer. Perhaps, the media watch dog needs to take appropriate action.

By Gypsy• 24 Mar 2009 10:09

He can't ban it outright no. But he could express his displeasure, which would go a long way. The First Amendment works both ways.

We (Americans) had a bad reputation before this Fox news program aired!

I think it was meant to be funny because some of the commentators are comedians. They failed again.

This "holier that thou" attitude has gotten us in trouble again and again and with deadly consequences.

Will this ever change? I doubt it. It's very sad.

I do Apologize as we didn't want Rupert so we sent him to the states where he found just what he was looking for, a country that by in large couldn't think for it's self ( I don't think this about all Yanks but you have to admit those that yanks that can think for themselves don't actually appear to be living in the country) and was primed to be led by the media.

There was a good show on bbc called "the power of nightmares' Which showed how successive american governments have used false propoganda to cajole the american people into dodgy wars. they showed clips of FOX news showing an artists impression of 'bin ladens bunker' which looked like something out of a james bond film!!!!!

When you have been the only Big Dog for a while, arrogance and the sense of infalibility creeps in.

Bush and Rumsfeld (including the neocons) probabaly propogated this image more than anyone else by their actions of the past eiight years.

Let us hope that Obama can turn things around.

Well what they said about Canada was not new, Although it was particularly insensitive towards the families of the 116 soliders killed in Afghanistan.

It was the overall arrogance that got me, the "Strongest nation in the Universe" crap. I mean seriously? They wonder why other nations don't like them and why 9/11 happened.

Fox News caters for a certain "strata" of society. Most of their news is gung ho and jingoistic. Should be taken witha pinch of salt by most.

What was fascinating was not so much the denegration of the Canadian Army, but the snide remarks regarding Canada's dependence on its neighbour for security.

By the way, Fox has apologized for this episode..
