yes it is possible to renew your family's resident visa prior to its expiry in advance. I have done it recently for my friend whose wife's R.P. will be expiring on 16th of July,2009 but i renewd it on 20th Feb,2009.
But, please make sure that your R.P. has a Valid Date.
