DNRD chief rubbishes visa cancellation rumour

The boss of the Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department (DNRD) has described as “nonsense” claims of mass visa cancellations and thousands of cars being abandoned at Dubai Airport.

In an exclusive interview with Arabian Business magazine to be published on Sunday, Major General Mohammed Ahmed Al-Marri said that other countries were “jealous” of the success of the emirate.

“When you are successful, people never focus on your success. That is human nature. They look for the mistakes and try and find problems.

"Everyone in the world wants to know how Dubai has become so pretty, so they can copy our ideas. But it is not easy to copy, and this is the problem. So they become jealous and they write what is complete nonsense,” he added.

It's clearly a case of the media painting a rosy picture in order to ensure the residents don't realise the truth.

Just like they do here in Qatar.

Uh, oh!, I don't think that's the right word. I think if rumor such as this which particularly puts the job security of an expats in line, the officials should have a clear explanation on the issue or they would be misinterpreted.

And then there was this: More than half of the residential and commercial property projects in Dubai due for completion by 2012 have been put on hold or cancelled, a study says.

Property company Jones Lang LaSalle says a lack of funding, job cuts and a fall in population are the cause of the delays and cancellations.

Dubai's property market has seen a sharp downturn recently after years of rapid development and booming prices.

The report shows vacant office space has doubled in the past six months.

Hotel occupancy rates have also fallen to a five-year low.

Jones Lang LaSalle expects the residential property market to suffer further in the next three months.

Maybe the BBC is 'jealous'?

I think his reference is to the hordes of Eastern Ruropean ladies brought in to "prettyize" the emirates...

"Everyone in the world wants to know how Dubai has become so pretty"

There's a lot of words I'd use to describe Dubai, but PRETTY definitely isn't one of them!
