Your thoughts on Qatar expat life please!

Hello everyone

I'm hoping you can help me with some research I'm doing into the expat market in the Middle East. I'm most interested to hear about expats experiences of living and working in Qatar, particulary in the current economic climate.

I was wondering if this is something any of the members here would be able to help me with?

I have a couple of questions really:
1. What is it like for expats in Qatar now, and how has it changed for you over the past year or so?
2. What attracted you to work in Qatar?
3. What drives expats to leave when the time comes to move on from Qatar?

What would be the best way to get in touch - by phone, email or PM?

I look forward to hearing from you,

Natalie

1. What is it like for expatriates in Qatar now, and how has it changed for you over the past year or so?

Depends on your interests and inclinations actually. There is something for everyone. Whether you are an outgoing types or prefer to stay home. Whether you are modern or conservative. Whether you are interested in water sports or desert safari. There is a list of things to do and places to visit.

2. What attracted you to work in Qatar? - Tax Free Salary and the ruling family.

3. What drives expatriates to leave when the time comes to move on from Qatar? - Better opportunities and personal constrainist if at all.

Life is Beautiful...Indeed!

1. Life sucks here, nothing to do but work. Beach is great but its a long way to the water, and your not allowed to wear your swim costume when you get there.

2. Yup its the money.

3. Your right, its not the time to be looking for a job elsewhere. But its also not the time to be caving into ruthless employers who want to get rid of all the western expat day raters either by forcing us to go direct and take a 40% cut in pay.

1. Life is OK here at the moment. I think it's got a bit stricter here over the past year, but others may disagree.

2. Money.

3. We set a time limit on living in Qatar, which has been and gone. Now is not the time to be looking for a job elsewhere.

Wow, amazing! Thanks so much for all your replies, very interesting

I'm wanting to understand what impact, if any, the current climate is having on trends in the expat market and would love to hear some thoughts from expats themselves. I'm looking for thoughts from expats from any country of origin - all thoughts welcome!

Can I send each of you a couple more questions - either by email or PM?

Cheers

sycophantic to the locals.

They are at least 100 years behind in all things but they have ther money and power and Religion.

So if you want to move on here suck up to the locals.

I'd have to disagree. Money is certainly not the principle reason we are here.

I'm sure what ever country we came from Asia,Urope, USA, we are attracted to one same basik attraction. And that attraction of why are we working in qatar is money.

I agree with Heero. The nationality of the expat will determine the different experiences. Each has a set of reasons for coming to Qatar and you will probably find similarities within each group.

I agree it depends which expats you are looking for in your research!

1. I hate to say this, but you have to dissect the experiences of expatriates according to his own nationality. It kinda changed me alot on how one's nationality is being treated in this country which we do not account from back home. It must be the system that works in this country that makes it treat that way.

2. Qatar was something new to my ear at my early experience. Saudi and UAE was already familiar so I tried to venture this country out. Although at first I can balance the expenses and money express to send back home, it now bogs down to finding your own set of friends in a place where everyone is different.

3. Either or all of these: attitude problems of the people around here, better opportunities, homesickness, financially stable back home, injustifiable welfare of the expatriate, escape from unjust acts, etc.
