2.7L Fortuner is ok for dune bashing. I have proven it and in fact I am a member of a Filipino group that frequents the sand dunes - High and low... Hope this helps and sorry for late posting..

Alongside Power,Stability of this vehicle is questionable too on gravel roads. On the the tarmac its behaviour is satisfactory.

Unfortunately 2.7 Fortuner is quite heavy and can barely pull itself in the sand,2.7L powerplant can be good only upto the beaches where help is at hand in case you need towing. In the desert and sand dunes this vehicle will leave you stranded until help arrives[if U R lucky].Even the 4.0 L can get stuck easily in sand unless it has Rear Differential Lock, standard Centre Diff Lock is not enough to get you out.You may be lucky if you dont get stuck even with 4.0L Prado.Depends upon your experience in Off Roading/desert driving skills.Centre Diff Lock is useless if one front and one rear wheel loses traction.

Good Luck.

You can try, make sure you reduce air pressure to 18PSI.

2.7 dont have enough Horse Power for off roading. if you want it offroading go for 4.0 liter it has good power.

It is not meant for sand dunes. But you can go to the sand dunes. Don't try to go up one.
