Fat women earn less than Thin women

An independent study conducted by economists at the U.S. Department of Labor reports data which show that overweight women makes less than their thinner counterparts.
DoL economist David Lampert studied nearly 2,000 women over a period of two decades who ranged in weight from 122lbs to 165lbs and found that in 1981 thinner women earned about 4.29% more than more than overweight ones and that the wage disparity has risen to 7.47% in the year 2000.
When conducting further research with 4,000 additional women, Lampert found that the wage disparity might even be higher than 7.47% as his second study group recorded a wage disparity that nearly doubled over a 17 year study period.
Pay discrimination very often goes beyond initial hiring, but continues even after a overweight or obese women has secured a job. Very often overgrown women are less assertive than thinner women for reason owing to self-esteem.
Economists found that men often do not suffer with the consequence of weight in the work place as women do, men with added weight “apparently look stronger.”

Do you think its discrimination? or you feel sorry for these overweight woman??

And tall men make more than their shorter counterparts with similar qualifications. I believe it's about the unconscious prejudices we all carry. We (as a general rule) like tall, slender people and somehow believe them more capable. It's not too sinister but awareness of our preconceptions can help us not act on them. And NFH, you look mahvelous, dahling! Tall and slender!

This whole thread is arse-about-tit.

Yes, obesity and earnings are probably correlated, but that's probably because poorer women have a worse diet.

Journalists seem incapable of differentiating between correlation and causation.

You might as well write an article about how smokers earn less than non-smokers, or how Jerry Springer fans earn less than Jeremy Paxman fans. Giving up smoking, or switching your viewing habits is unlikely to affect your wages because they don't cause the observed correlation.

FS "Very often overgrown women are less assertive than thinner women for reason owing to self-esteem."

- Hell, no!

FS"Do you think its discrimination? or you feel sorry for these overweight woman??"

- Yes, discrimination in respect of hirers who are biased putting looks above qualifications. However, it also depends on the requirements of the job. If job entails backroom operations, capabilities more important. If front line / reception, etc. a pretty face creates the necessary first impression for customers, etc.

- No, generally don't feel sorry for these overweight women because they GENERALLY have more substance to their character, work capabilities, etc.

about myself. He just cautioned me that some entity here in QL would use it to hit me (personally).

anyways, no harm done.

You know what, I still consider myself overweight though friends say otherwise. And right now, I think i gained more weight since I stopped going to the gym :-)

Some people are calling obesity an epidemic.

Regardless of this fact, it is descrimination when a qualified over-weight woman is not compensated financially compared to her thin counter part.

And, making fun of people is just plain ignorant.

So it's ok to discriminate against them, brit?

In general I would tend to agree with this. However, we have seen that both men and women in the West have been getting heavier in recent years..

I agree with NFH and let me add that I think you need to visit a confessional booth and begin your penance.

Hmmm, looks like I missed something. I'm guessing it was a good thing Red Pope deleted his comments.

Azi, I was referring to your comment about a person's qualifications being more important than their weight. Too bad everyone who does the hiring doesn't think like that!

:-/

I used to be very overweight, yes obese, so I've BEEN on the other side. It will be a struggle for the rest of my life to stay healthy and right now I'm definitely a little bit, uh, ~curvier~ than I'd like to be lol, but I'm working on it. Constantly.

And I've always been the same person...weight has nothing to do with my intelligence or abilities or the kind of person I am, but I've absolutely been treated differently.

RP, when you come on here and make fun of overweight people, it's no different than making fun of someone's skin color, nationality, age, religion, etc.........

Not appropriate here.

but not yet obese...more likely I'm 20lbs over my ideal weight (based on my height).

And yes, sometimes, one's self-esteem is affected when you're get side-stepped with a slimmer competitor vying for the same job...

There is rap song but I can't remember the title, it has a unique line, "Oversize lover in the House."

Now, I understand the marketing scheme of the fast food restaurants," Everything Big to go."

Here is the best saying after all.

Is not over until the fat lady signs.

Surely, I hate that fat woman!

RP, telling fat women jokes??????????

Yes, fat people are discriminated against in the US. Yes, I do believe the results of the study.

Unfortunately Azi, not everyone thinks like you :-(

They are fit for the job. The Question is: Is the chair able to fit them?

By azilana7037• 19 Feb 2009 13:12
azilana7037

Seriously, being FAT has nothing to do with it, unless the person itself makes it matter. I know a few volumptous (sp?) ladies have great jobs and positions and at par with their slimmer/petite counterparts.

I think what matters most is what Intelligence Quotient (I.Q.) a person has and if she/he fits/qualifies for the job and the salary he/she is getting.

Maybe it should be that....Thin women are more likely to get hired than fat women...not that thin gets paid more...thats total bollocks!

By Hasan Shaikh• 19 Feb 2009 12:18

Its true. Fat women earn lesss than thin women. Mainly because the individuals who are hiring and determining the salaries are men. And you cannot really blame them for this. If I am hiring someone. I can allocate any salary within the range defined by the company. And I can justify my decision with a million reasons. Practically, there is nothing that can be done about this.

Formatted soul - saying that overweight women are "too lazy to work and get a promotion", is the type of negative attitude that causes problems in the workplace for bigger women!
