We have fabrics galore here. The most beautiful stuff you can imagine. Souq Asirie is full of the fabric shops as well as Shara Karbah. Silks, embroidered etc etc. Only knitting yarn is not really available. They have some at Rawnaq, but not much choice. Also buttons and applique are very available here. So if you want to bring something, only bring the knitting stuff.
For cottons for shirts - try in the men's tailoring shops, lots of colours and conservative patterns (checks, stripes, etc.) the fabric quality is excellent.
There is a very nice shop on Al Sadd (same side as Opera) near Larissa (I think) - they have lots of linens, cottons and silks but it is pricier.
I have seen the stuff in the Souq Waqif (or however it's spelled) and wasn't impressed. Is there somewhere else I should be looking? I'd like to find nice "hip" fabrics for clothing & decorative items. Thanks! :o)
Have to disagree on the fabrics - there are lots of good cottons and woolen fabrics to be found here, there is no need to bring any with you.
In my experience the prices are lower and quality is much better than you would find in North America - maybe if you're coming from India or South East Asia the answer might be a bit different.
good yarn is not to be found here--bring it with you.
Fabrics are widely available, mostly of two different varieties----cheap cotton or expensive beaded stuff. Most people also bring quite a bit of fabric with them.
Don't know about yarn - the only kind I've seen is cheap acrylic but someone else may know more about that.
Fabrics are available in a dizzying variety at many different price points. Good quality cotton may be anywhere between QAR10 - 50 per yard depending on the shop and how well you can bargain. Wool is more expensive but again, good quality wool (you have to go to the men's fabric shops to find it) can run between 30 up to several 100 QAR per yard for Armani or Versace.
The only problem with wool is that it can be difficult to find girly colours (pinks/pastels) although light blues and the beige family are available widely.
