The difference between Israel and Palestine is democracy and oil. You have to have at least one of the 2 to be prosperous in this area and Palestine has neither. Shame on Israel for building on land they won in a treaty signed 40 years ago.

Platao36,

I disagree with you about Hamas, the problem is 60 years old, its not about rockets and weapon contraband, weapon to those people is more important than food, you can live without food for few days but you can survive with Israel without weapon. you either die or loose your dignity.

those people dont have anybody to defend them, to you they may be fool but to us they are poor people trying to defend their families, any if anybody want to take their weapon and dignity let him go there and try...

And this propaganda about civilian separated from hamas thing is NOT correct at all, Hamas is from those families: sons, fathers, brothers and husbands. they didnt came from mars or something.

Aissa: lol, exactly, because Hamas wasn't smart enough to understand that by refusing the 2 only requests that Israel was asking (no rockets + no weapon contraband), showed that they weren't interested in stopping the Israeli attacks just to be shown as victimes

hahaha, i read some of your comedy comments but this was the best, what the h-ll, why he didnt act as monster from the first day and scare Isreal and save lots of lives. wallah if your are serious then you have a serious problem.

I can understand that they stop war coz of qatar action, coz of world pressure, coz of any thing but not this.

even my small brother knew that Israel will stop war soon few days ago, they were adviertising it on the news. Got scared ha.

Both states freezed their relations with Israel but not suspend. i think there semantic difference between these two terms.

I believe that Israel is not serious about anything, and it became more stubborn and pretentious after it killed more than 1500 Muslim Arab Palestinians from Children and women and elderly, with the sulk silence of Arabs, Muslims and International Community.

please do not forget the premeditated destruction of the Palestinian infrastructure including schools, state buildings, hospitals and mosques.

I believe that what Israel is doing has never happened in humanity history before, not less than thousands years ago (during uncivilized ages)

coelacanth, it can be argued that hamas also responded with what ever means they have to israeli aggression, the whole reason the rockets where being launched was because israel even in the cease fire did not stop targeting hamas officials, and the blockade was never lifted, as for the human shield argument, i doubt the unrwa hospital and schools had any fighters in it, since media cameras where their 24/7 reporting live from that location, and that did not stop the idf from attacking it, lets for one second forget the systematic eradication of civilians in gaza, why is israel refusing to allow the media to film in gaza, why is israel blockading all forms of un aid and humans right watch officials from entering the troubled zone, and why is israel targeting the media.....its because the idf can not be shown in its true light, as a racist barbaric army, they prefer if hamas instead was portrayed as the aggressors.....i said it before, the argument for who started what is far too complex and both sides will not see the point of view from the other side....what i am trying to argue is, in this was, their is the IDF, and their is Hamas, IDF has used banned weapons against gaza, shelled civilian locations, and attacked UN and media institutions, close to 1200 dead over 5000 injured.... anyone claiming this is an equal response, has to get their heads out of their @#!'s and just look at the figures...i am an arab that grew up and lived in the states, the bias in the news media their is just sickening, here in the middle east you have acess to both sides of the story, you can get american channels, and pro palestinian channels, and some what neutral channels, before you go online spreading hate and theories, i invite a lot of you to actually see both sides of the story, israel is a reality and the arabs have to live with it, its here to stay and no amount of civil unrest and resistance will wipe it out, their people have no where to go, that said, the palestinians also have right to their land, and no amount of carnage and massacres will also push them out of their homes, its a stalemate, and the only thing israel is succeeding in doing is planting hatred in the majority of the Palestinians and the arabs

Qatar has Balls....

.....that other Arab countries, GCC included doesnt have,....I guess the Emir called a meeting and he was dissappointed by the character of the Arab Leaders or their lack of it.

It is indeed great of Qatar to take a stand on this issue finally. I guess the rally did help in reassuring the Emir as of the compassion of the People of Qatar towards the Gaza issue.

It no longer matters who is right or wrong....what matters is the bloodshed has to stop.

The Palestians have been pushed back to the Stone Age....No schools, no hospitals,...No Postoffice.

Qatar has done right by suspending its ties with Israel over its disproportionate use of force. At least the Emir can sleep peacefully with his Conscience unlike the other Arab leaders.

Hamas wants support from Arab nations, to do this, "Let Israel slaughter our people so we get their attention (arab nations)" Who in his rightful thinking would put rocket launchers, mortars in between civilian houses that you know Israel Air Force will bomb it?

By coelacanth• 17 Jan 2009 09:24

When Hamas militants bombed Israel, it was not a big deal. when Israel retaliated, it becomes political, and moreso, Religious. Hamas militants should think of their actions prior to attacking Israel. they are just using the civilians as shields so that Israel can be blamed for the bombing. It was not Israel who started the launching of rockets, it was Hamas militants. And Israel was not even warned that rockets will be fired at them. Israel warned Gaza that a rocket will be launched. Now, why point the finger on one party when they are at war? If Hamas is at the winning end, will there be a big news such as these? Suicide bombings in Israel prior, was it a big deal? Was it because Hamas is a Muslim, and is using religion as a tool to gain support from muslim countries? They are at war, and Hamas started it. they should be blamed for starting the war, and the effects of it. I hope this doesn't become another Afghanistan/Iraq where religion was used to gain supporters in their fight because this war was not triggered by Religion, but by politics. What was the treatment of Other countries to US after they destroyed IRAQ looking for "Weapons of Mass Destruction", and found NOTHING? US was PRAISED instead!!! How many children were killed then? How many women were raped by US Servicemen? How many civilians were executed? Aren't you guys being biased?

Don't get me wrong...i am not an Israeli, nor supports Israel. In every Action, there is ALWAYS an EQUAL and OPPOSITE REACTION. Someone bombed Israel, do you think Israel will be happy and sits around waiting for another rocket?

If Hamas stops the bombing, there will be ceasefire. If Israel stops retaliating, it will be wiped out of the face of the earth.

It's not because things are difficult that we don't dare, it's because we don't dare that makes things difficult!

and I love the country. You have your country, it is up to the Palestinians as to how they get theirs, And if that means accepting a reduced Israel then that is their choice, not yours. The trouble is that this desire to eradicate Israel(by non Palestinians) is keeping the palestinians from getting their homeland.

At the end of the day it doesn't effect me at all, but it will do no one any good to see this conflict go on for another 60 yrs. By then there will be nobody alive who were driven out of the 'old' Palestine. prehaps that is what it going to take for their to be peace - 1948 as ancient history.

A few questions for you - I assume you are from a Palestinian family, where were you born? how long have you been in Qatar? Would you leave your birth home, or Qatar, for good if you had the right to return?

I only ask as most Palestinians I know would not return as they have never been there and have comfortable lives else where.

The Palestinians that count most are the ones living there now, the wishes of the Palestinian diaspora are of secondary concern.

Sorry to tell you this my friend but Israel is here to stay, the very best the Palestinians can do(and this is supported by the majority of Palestinians that actually live in the occupied territories) is a two state solution. I believe and hope that Obama actually realises that the key to the so called 'war on terrorism' & 'clash of civilisations' is the Palestinian issue.I think he realises it's that important and I hope he will give Israel some tough talking.

The US is the key, as you haven't said anymore as to how the Arab nations are going to overcome Israel.

The Palestinians want a country and peace, and for that one has to be practical not ideological and accepting that there is a place called Israel whether you like it or not.

but their aren't that many ties between Israel and the whole of the Arab/Muslim world.

The new US administration has to have the balls to do some tough talking to the Israelis and tell them how there is going to be a Palestinian state, free of settlements, whether they like it or not. I can see the EU and the UN security council reinforcing this if the US takes the lead. In the long game now is not the time for the Arab nations to piss off the Americans, you will need them to establish a Palestinian State - no one else has that power over the Israelis.

Does that make sense?

Well done Emir! Its high time Israel learns how to live in peace with her neighbours instead of depending on muscle flexing with United States weapons...forget the idea of using force to subject/change the will of people; you can't live in peace by starving your neighbours. Hamas on the other hand should concentrate on building schools, hospitals, infrastructure with whatever aid they are getting... build a striving society with a very strong tourism sector instead of rockets. I pray the soeuls of the Matyrs; innocent children and women rest in perfect peace.

"exporting oil altogether" - Sorry that could be read two ways, what I meant was stop exporting oil world wide, specifically to western countries in order to put pressure on the west. But this is not what today's summit even mentioned.

You are right, it is western support that Israel needs - Arab boycotts of Israel has very little or no leverage at all. This was my initial point - the Qatar tie cutting is gestural, it has no real impact on Israel at all.

while reading our history, i cry, because we used fuel as weapon to protect our self only once and the results was amazing. i dont think this will happen again with the existing leaders.

250 million dollars in aid, cutting of ties with israel and trying to arrange a summit to put pressure on israel to cease the gaza massacre, everything qatar could do to save gaza they did, they moved beyond the stage of support statements and back door dealings, unlike other gulf and arab nations.... with that said, their is no way a person can justify israel response on gaza, regardless of who is to blame for starting the war (and i will get back to that later) targeting civilian area's and UN schools, you need to be blind, or just plain stupid to see that as a justified responce, or even put the word justified in the same sentence of the idf or israel......its israel that started all this, they chose to blockade gaza, and deny them of food, water, electricity, petrol and medical supplies, they chose to build walls, and place checkpoints surrounding the city so that nothing can get in and out, israel has not won anything in this was, only way hamas was weakened is by killing of over a thousand of gazan civilians, as for their fighters, 20 rockets where fired today, and the whole point of this 21 day war was to stop those rockets...

What i need to say that Arabs can apply a lot of pressure on all the world to push them to stop supporting Israel.

Pet'r Oil

Before you came it was dark everywhere

The world was empty and dull, I wonder why

I searched everywhere for sweet light

For a flame that would warm my heart

When you came, as if a sun has dawned

Illuminating my day and night, my life was wonderful

Now, all of a sudden, everything has changed

Without you, life is difficult and hard

Lovely pet'r oil, sweet pet'r oil

I need you now, pet'r oil

Lovely pet'r oil, sweet pet'r oil

I need you now, pet'r oil

In the beginning, pet'r oil, in the end pet'r oil

Now my reigns are in your hands, pet'r oil

In the beginning, pet'r oil, in the end pet'r oil

Now my reigns are in your hands, pet'r oil

You are so proud, I can't come close to you

I wonder who else suffers from your love

You speak of nothing but dollars and marks

I am so suffering because of you

Israel does not use Arab oil, a quick search found this, from Jeeves:

"Until recently, with a significant offshore natural gas discovery, Israel has had essentially no commercial fossil fuel resources of its own, and has been forced to depend almost exclusively on imports to meet its energy needs. Israel has attempted to diversify its supply sources and to utilize alternatives like solar and wind energy. Traditionally, Israel has relied on expensive, long-term contracts with nations like Mexico (oil), Norway (oil), the United Kingdom (oil), Australia (coal), South Africa (coal), and Colombia (coal) for its energy supplies."

What else you got to offer, as I said, I am as oppossed to the Israeli State's treatment of Palestine as you are but you cant use an embargo, of a product that Israel does not use, to alter anything.

just what do all these righteous people think Israel should do, when their neighbors call for their destruction, state that all Jews should be killed, when Hamas send rockets into their towns on a daily basis. Yes, perhaps over reacting- but they put up with a lot for a long time. Hamas is to blame, and must accept responsibility for this disaster

UN partition

Main article: United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine

UN partition plan, 1947

On 29 November 1947, the United Nations General Assembly, with a two-thirds majority international vote, passed the United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine (United Nations General Assembly Resolution 181), a plan to resolve the Arab-Jewish conflict by partitioning the territory into separate Jewish and Arab states, with the Greater Jerusalem area (encompassing Bethlehem) coming under international control. Jewish leaders (including the Jewish Agency), accepted their portion of the plan, while Palestinian Arab leaders rejected it and refused to negotiate. Neighboring Arab and Muslim states also rejected the partition plan. The Arab community reacted violently after the Arab Higher Committee declared a strike and burned many buildings and shops. In a speech delivered on 25 March 1948, US President Truman recommended a temporary trusteeship and stated: We could not undertake to impose this solution on the people of Palestine by the use of American troops, both on Charter grounds and as a matter of national policy.[132] As armed skirmishes between Arab and Jewish paramilitary forces in Palestine continued, the British mandate ended on May 15, 1948, the establishment of the State of Israel having been proclaimed the day before (see Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel). The neighboring Arab states and armies (Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Transjordan, Holy War Army, Arab Liberation Army, and local Arabs) immediately attacked Israel following its declaration, and the 1948 Arab-Israeli War ensued. Consequently, the partition plan was never implemented.

Now I understand.

"Following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, the 1949 Armistice Agreements between Israel and neighboring Arab states eliminated Palestine as a distinct territory. With the establishment of Israel, the remaining lands were divided amongst Egypt, Syria and Jordan. The Arab governments at this point refused to set up a State of Palestine.

The region as of today: Israel, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and the Golan Heights

In addition to the UN-partitioned area it was allotted, Israel captured 26% of the Mandate territory west of the Jordan river. Jordan captured and annexed about 21% of the Mandate territory, known today as the West Bank. Jerusalem was divided, with Jordan taking the eastern parts, including the Old City, and Israel taking the western parts. The Gaza Strip was captured by Egypt."

I am no supporter of the Israeli State's treatment of the Palestinians and believe Palestine should be a free independent country(most likely back to the 67 border with all West bank settlements gone) but.....

Did the Israel suffer when no Arab nation had ties with it? - No

Will it suffer if all Arab nations again cut all ties? - No.

What Qatar and others are doing is a gesture, no more than that, it won't make a difference I'm afraid save to help the Arabs conscience.

I don't know how you see Israel, but we should not forget that Israel is occupying the land which belongs to Palestinians... Palestinians are fighting for their Land, for Food, for Medicines, for Schools, and for FREEDOM ..

I think Israel state was declared in 1948, where was Israel before 1948? In these 50 years you can see the difference between the lifestyle of Israel and Palestine... One should open his eyes and read the history...

I am sure by suspending ties with Israel it will have a huge political impact on Israel and to it's supporters.
