WHY USE HAZARD LIGHTS DURING FOGGY WEATHER ?

By rb73

I have noticed a lot of drivers (80%) are using there vehicle's hazard lights while driving in foggy weather. This should be avoided; as it makes it difficult for other motorists to know whether the car will be turning left or right or in case there was a real danger on the road, instead vehicles main lights should be turned on in these conditions.
Hazard lights should only be used if there is an emergency.

even i agree that hazard lights should not be turned on during foggy wheather coz it confuses rear vehicle to judge the hazard light vehicle when it turns left or right. instead we should turn on the dim lights to give a clear view of our vehicle.

also there should be polling on this question.

regards and please turn on the dim lights during foggy wheather.

FOGGY WEATHER is an emergency conditions... especially here since it is not usual to have foggy here.

Driving here is very dangerous considering normal weather condition.. much more during foggy...

Amoud...The phrase, when in Rome is a good one to use when you don’t worry about the knock on effects or consequences, and in this case it shows you have a blatant disregard for the safety of yourself and other road users.

I suspect if you had children then you would be allowing them to travel in the back seat, front seat and in the boot without worrying about using seat belts wouldn’t you? This is done here in Qatar as it was in the UK did in the 70's. Then, like Qatar now we were not switched on to the consequences of the dangers of driving outside of the rules.

Wouldn't it be a good idea for the more educated folk amongst us to drive correct in the hope that other people may take note? No, then carryon regardless without any thought for other road users, how very, awfully arrogant of you old chap.

Thanks Jonboy, very articulate, well spoken words from the mouth of a very well mannered gentleman.

Ever think that the road rules and mores of Qatar do not have to match those of Europe and the West? I guess it is also extremely stupid that it is not the car to the right that has the right of way in Qatar as it does in North America. When in Rome ladies and Gentlemen.

Yes u are right but u know we can't do anything. It is in ur hand that u can do accidents and say why u on the hazards light thats why this accidents occur.

Actually we have no permission to drive in a foggy weather. I think Blinking hazard light is more visible than park light, so that most of the drivers are using hazard light while vehicle on motion.........

DURING FOGGY WEATHER,IT WILL BE DIFFICULT TO SEE THE ROAD AND VEHICLES IN FRONT.IF YOU PUT ON HAZARD LIGHT,IT WILL BE EASIER FOR THE ON BEHIND YOU, TO SEE YOU.BECAUSE YELLOW LIGHT WILL SCATTER MUCH MORE THAN WHITE LIGHT AND IT SPREADS IN THE FOG.EVEN IF THIS CAUSES CONFUSION,PUTTING ON HAZARD WILL AVOID BIG ACCIDENT BY HITTING FROM BEHIND,SOMETIMES A SERIES OF COLLISIONS.

yes a lot of the newer cars have rear fog lights, it is usually a switch that makes your tail lights brighter and some people leave them on so you think they have their brakes on. There really is no such thing as "fog" lights per se, they are just lights pointing lower which makes it easier to see in the fog which means you shouldn't drive in fog with high beams on. On most new cars the "hazard lights" are now independent of the turn signals.

If you don't need to be out don't drive in the fog!

It is extremly wrong to run the hazard lights during fog and if the car is in motion, because you can't tell the car in the back where you will turn, second thing most of the cars here in Qatar has rear fog lights but some people they don't even know what is it for because I noticed some of them turn on the rear fog lights in the summer, in the foggy wheather what you have to do is just to slow down your speed and keep the vehicle's head light on and be carefull thats all, wish safety for every body.

We don't have much fog in this part of the world, only during a short part of the winter (like right now) so I guess that's why fog lights aren't normally available.

Perhaps you were confused the first time you saw it, but now you know. Hazard lights are used here on foggy days because they are easy to spot from a distance.

Take care out there on those wacky doha roads!

Amoud..then you are part of the problem arn't you, you dumb arse...Where did you learn to drive?? i suppose you don't indicate either when turning corners?

And for you last numb comment 'that no cars in the world have rear fog lights' well all i can say is that you have never left Qatar.. most cars from 2000 onwards, anywhere else in the world have at least 1 rear fog light. all cars, again in most countries other than Qatar, from 2005 onwards have 2.

I will definately switch on my hazard lights during the thick fog to increase the visibilty and to warn drivers to slow down and any unusual conditions up ahead.

im quite surprise that you are wonderin why...

HAZARDS LIGHTS ARE USED INSTEAD OF FOG LIGHTS HERE (WHICH ARE UNAVAILABLE)., the name implies its purpose in this sense, for the person driving the car and the person driving the car behind.,

I definately use my hazard lights driving on the highway here in foggy weather. It let the wanker screaming up behind me at 180-200 km/hour get a bit of a warning that I am there. The hazard lights are for the back of the car for this kind of reason. No car in the world is equipped with rear fog lights.

In addition to my previous post:

I agree with the fact that hazard lights are not to be used on a moving vehicle but almost all the cars coming to middle east are not equipped with the fog light which will help the other drivers to see if a car is moving in his/her front. Sometimes the early morning fog is very thick and it is not possible to see even if you switch on the head and tail lights. Most of the drivers noticed that it is easy to notice a blinking hazard light than a very weak tail light and that is why everybody is using it. It is like a chain action as one is following the other.

You will be able to see the blinking hazard lights from far even if it is very foggy. If there are no blinking hazard lights the possibility of having multiple accidents in the highways is very high.

this is a tradition of this country I had watched since 3 decads. This country is now more poen for multy nationality so this type of problem comes.in fact there should be a special fog light in back of vehical. It was before with mercedes and range rover.and it realy help(hezards lights) during fog.in this condition you have to keep your vehical at safe distence and have to reduce speed. If you are slow and you have safe distence from other car, I dont think there may any confusion.

I totally agree. This is an extremely dangerous practice. Head of Police came out a couple of years ago saying the same thing. But still it continues with accidents as results. During the Winter Season Fog is a regular occurrence during early hours of the morning.

I totally agree that Hazard lights should never be used when a car is in motion. Secondly I have noticed that all the car models that come to this part of the world do not have Fog lights??
