Fine for spitting .

Oh my . If I see one more person opening the door of his car at a traffic signal and spiting on the ground I am going to freak. What the hell is it with people in this place, cleaning their throats and spitting right there on the floor. You are F@king disgusting. Have you no self pride. Other people are also walking around and could step in your disgusting mucus.
You are a bunch of Neanderthal pigs, and I wish I could walk up to you and rub your face in your deposits on the floor. If it was not for the risk of being deported, I would knock your face in.
I love living in Doha, but some people are really disgusting, and has absolutely no manners. Do not tell me it is a cultural thing, I doubt if it could be in any ones culture to spit all over the place and not care if anyone else steps in it.
There should be a law against this disgusting habit.

Am I the only one with useless facts here ?

In the Thirteenth Warrior, they drink water from a bowl and then spit it back in. Then a man washes his face with the water and blows his nose into it before passing the bowl to the next person. A great way of "bonding"

S'pore & UAE for spitting on roads or public places.

I personaly feel one should be Responsible considering civic, hygenie and public health sensitives.

Be courteous and use kerchiefs or tissues rather cleaning the dirty linen in Public (metaphor)

I agree it is a revolting habit . Hearing somebody drain their sinuses into the back of their throat and hack it out on the road makes me gag everytime.

However the ugly fact is ,,,,yes it is a cultural thing. In many countries its not considered at all offensive or disgusting . Ive even seen women do it without a care in other countries.

Now you can purchase chewing gum in the chemist in Singapore.

Talking about spitting ... we were staying at ShangriLa Hotel in Singapore. One day we came back from our outing, walking back to the hotel ... when we arrived in the main door, there was this very good chinese looking guy (we reckoned he is in his early 30s) drove a lamborghini.Stopped the car by the main entrance, throw the keys to the car jockey and before he go to the main door he spat just outside his car in front of everybody. I can see some 'horrified' looks from the other hotel guests ....

I am not sure if this is a cultural thing ... but it is a very common sight in Singapore - Hongkong - China (as our experiences) to see people spitting. The most disgusting one is if you sit in the foodcourt, trying to enjoy the food and the table next to you making an extra noise and spat on the floor. YUCCCKKK !!!!

There are various types of "additives" that you put in the beetle leaf. Some will give you a "buzz", others just for pleasure.

The leaf is chewed. As you chew, your mouth generates saliva and ofcourse you can either swallow it or spit it out :)

Spitting is a bad habit practiced by many men all around the world. It has nothing to do with Culture or Nationality.

Soccer players spit all the time and we see it live on TV, but it's ok? They run around and glide, slip and slide on the grass after all the players spit at least once.

So, it will not affect your health.

Hey Brit, the "beatle leaf" is what they call 'sweyka'? It is some sort of herbal that is heavily laced with cloves right? They wad it in their cheeks, usually in tissue paper. I had a friend tell me they feel a bit high off this stuff.

Two clearly different things here. For anyone who has played sports, it is neccessary to spit every now and then. No choice.

However in public, it should be outlawed and fines imposed. A couple of weeks ago, a guy walking in front of me, suddnly cleared his nose on the side of the street.

many cultures do not see this as anything wrong. They need to be educated as to the dangers of spitting etc with relation to desease and germs...

UKengQatar: What you are talking about is "Beatle Leaf" ..

I think it is in Singapore that they do not sell chewing gums as people spit them on the ground after using them. (also to remove chewing gums from the street pavements is very expensive cleaning process) Also there are many signs saying that spitting is bad etc etc.. I think a public awareness campaign and signs will encourage people to refrain from such a habit..

Can any one tell me what is that red stuff is , that Indians or Bangadeshis spit out.. It stains every where???

i don't know how accepted it is...listen, i'll let it go if i see one qatari man coughing up a wet one smack on the floor in the presence of the emir, then i'll be sure that it's purely cultural.

You're right Oryx, it is disgusting and there's no reason for people to do it, especially outside your house. BUT, it is a cultural thing - it's accepted where they come from - and it's very hard to change something that someone's been doing all their life and thought was acceptable.

Sportsman and woman cannot run on the sport fields with handkerchiefs, and Boxers spit in a bucket. I do however see where you are going with this. I love Rugby and I do get irritated when players spit on the field, but that is understandable, they cannot excuse themselves quickly and go off.

But for pedestrians to walk around spitting all over the place, sorry there is no excuse. They are just plainly disgusting.

yep my sentiments entirely...

disgusting and people should get heavily fined....

it is also a health hazard....

i get really angry when i see people gobbing esp on my compound.....

Well in some cultures it is an acceptable thing to do, so I think you have to put it down as being a cultural thing. Of course that doesn't mean it's a good thing.

Obviously when you get many cultures all living in one small place like Doha some things are going to upset other cultures.

I think there is a fine for spitting, but I'm not sure how well it's enforced.
