Hey Apple sorry, i was already out whe you ask a question to me, ..No, i am telling generally, it is better to find out by self coz i myself doesnt really know the real story and if we just rely on what others said, one tells different from one, so better go find out by self. What ia am sure is credit cards are issued upon application even without account. And As long as one have salary in the bank, you can open an account without initial deposit.

The first time i came to Qatar 23 years ago, i don't have any money at all.. i just depend and contented of my food and lodging for free. Before, when they said all is free, it is really free.

Surprised?

I've been in Qatar.... when a big villa can be rented at Qr5k and a 3b/r flat cost you around Qr1,500/....when my 1st mobile was Ericson, a size of an iron:( ....when my computer was Pentium-2....when there is no other mall than the Mall....when the tallest building that time was Salam Plaza....when almost every seconds an empty orange cab passby you...and when I took a taxi and driver will take route at West bay (now City Center), then I felt like to weewee coz am too scared, it was desert! ahhh those were the days, Indeed sweet days!

it s the only country were a bank work with your many because your salary is transferred there, but when you ask for a credit card !!! they make this kind of segregation between expatriate and local resident. without even asking about your salary.

are you saying we are stupid? Of course we have money, but not that much as you think. And since everything will be provided by our company, we don't need that much money!

And do come to reality, maybe you should stand at the airport's arrival area and ask all people coming in Doha if they have money or not? Then, it's you're move to allow them or not? Now tell me, who is stupid?

Yes! there are some "stupid" who came to Qatar having less of the said amount in their pocket. And 10yrs ago... I was one of them, coz my company provide us everything though 1st salary came after 3 months time but Seniors/Management are kind hearted to arrange us for a start. And NOT all companies are the same us mine *sad facts*

So, expats coming to Qatar for work these days must either be "Rich Enough" to have Qr5k pocketmoney or "Stupid Enough"! :D

By anonymous• 22 Dec 2008 15:32

I can hardly imagine that anyone would be stupid enough to get on a plane and move to another country without at least the equivalent of QAR 5,000 or even QAR3,000 in their pockets. Would anyone seriously just come here with no money whatsoever?

If they do, they're an idiot for assuming that until they get paid they won't need any money.

QR5000 according to The Peninsula, but then they also seem to think that banks here aren't affected by the financial crisis; http://www.qatarliving.com/node/304058

The minimums now seem to be 3000QR for a savings account, 4500QR for a current account.

Restricting access to banking is bound to lead to increased theft.

I'm going make a separate post about it, just because the first line of that report is hilarious;

To open Savings Account definitely needs a certain amount to deposit but how is it possible for a Current Account when an employee have just landed and started for work? Unless his company lend him the required amount as an advance fees to open a Current Account? But, not all companies provide advance salary?

Absolutely surprising! :0

By tallg• 22 Dec 2008 13:50
tallg

Hardly surprising given the current economic situation. I read also that you now have to have a minimum deposit to open a current or savings account.

Hmmm.. very prudent to shore up its security measures and be more vigilant in its credit risk assessments.

While chatting with someone just now, I just heard that a number of people incurred huge debts to the tune of around QR250k each and then fled the country. They weren't caught at the airport as the bank's monitoring system (not referring to QNB but another bank) which unfortunately, did not track the amounts owing, or rather, tracked them too late. Hmmm...

This past few weeks, bec. of global crisis and alot of companies lay-offs expat workers is the reason why they tighten the banks belt rendering loans. Imagine yourself with a big loan and your company had given you a month to go back home, how would you settle your debts? Well, for your own good and with the banks safety,it is better not to take one.
