Tourists shot at after sat nav shortcut
Three Norwegian tourists came under fire after their sat nav guided them through one of Rio de Janeiro's most dangerous slums.
The three men cut short their vacation in Brazil and headed home after Trygve Killingtveit, 24, was shot in the shoulder by suspected drug traffickers.
The tourists were returning from the beach resort of Buzios when they got lost, Brazil's Globo TV and local newspapers reported.
They reportedly told police their GPS system recommended they turn off a main highway as the quickest route back to the airport to drop off the rental car.
But the suggested route took them deep into the Mare slum complex, where their rented car quickly came under fire.
Killingtveit managed to drive the car to safety despite being wounded. He told family members in Norway that he probably went astray because of a fault in the GPS, Norwegian daily Dagbladet reported.
To calculate distance, elevation and mark it on my laptop as a reference point that I visit.
I will download from Google earth maps location and then I will note way-points of interest and reference.
Including I use the GPS to identify my photos of the location as a tool of educational reference for others to understand them.
It is tedious work, but If you are Geography and history type of person it helps a lot.
You have to be careful in not taking pictures of government buildings or any military installations.
I always carry a thumb drive to upload the info into my web account every day.

You could have just followed the burnt out tanks and other vehicles left behind..
i used the very first GPS during Desert Storm.
I still do trust better my old Lensatic compass and map reading skills, better than the GPS.
We used to call them Pluggers..
Let someone drop you off in the middle of a triple canopy Jungle, 50 miles from any road or town, it is Rainy season and flooded.
Then they will tell you need to find 7 points on the map to pass the course in twelve hours.
What they did not mention was the abundance of mosquitoes, poisonous snakes, Caiman gators , poisonous plants, scorpions, nasty ants and leeches are abundant.
No GPS baby, just your guts, learned skills , the paper map and the lensatic compass.

You know that the GPS is 'invented" by our colonial cousins and they are used to the danger areas like Bronx, Detroit, Downtown Washington..
