Veil Your Candy

Formatted Soul
By Formatted Soul

Campaign to encourage women in Egypt to cover up to avoid sexual harrassment.

Photobucket

On the top, the Poster reads : A veil to protect, or eyes will molest

At the bottom of the poster, under a rapped candy, Quran is quoted with the meaning “God wants you to walk the right path...”

Under the unwrapped candy, the one with flies and yucky looking stuff, the quote continues “while those who are sinful/lustful want you to deviate from it.”

Whats your say about this?

Yeah, it was Egypt where over 80% of the men admitted harrassing women. But don't make a mistake: Egypt is an 'Arabic Republic' not an 'Islamic Republic.'

Edifis: Exactly, the 3 monkeys. Lol, i love swis candies too, and what about the swiss chocolate?

I do think that they could use another message saying that men in egypt are so unpure that they can't resist seeing a girl/women that isn't fully covered up, btw, wasn't it in Egypt that it was reported sexual harassment made by men to fully covered women/girls?

See no evil, hear no evil, say no evil.

This philosophy is depicted by 3 monkies.

One covers its eye

the other covers its ear

and the third covers its mouth.

So each one is allowed to use 2 out of 3 senses to do evil. The third should be kept holy!

Interesting, i'm presently at Rabat and i hardly see any woman using niqab and men don't seam to be staring at them.

So, i would say it's a cultural matter.

I guess these are lesbian candies. They cohabit in one wrapper. Holes aligned!

By anonymous• 28 Nov 2008 12:11

But it contains mint (menthol), and too much of it can make you stop breathing.

By edifis• 28 Nov 2008 12:10

I like POLO. It's the only candy with a hole!

And the wrapper is good too.

By the way, I hate the "Packing Industry"!

By anonymous• 28 Nov 2008 12:03

Sometimes I find something inside that I don't like because the "wrapping" was nicer than the candy itself.

By edifis• 28 Nov 2008 12:03
edifis

But I often unwrap a candy in public places. Doesn't the ad send a wrong signal then. If not then unwrapping candies is becoming quite risky! Next time I should exercise caution before unwrapping one. I should find out which is which? And is unwrapping this legal in Qatar?

CAUTION!!

Beware of the candies with black wrappers!!

Only legal owners can unwrap these.

Men have no self control - not getting into Religion of any sort. Sexual harassment is everywhere. Sad.

But the Advert - not just noting the Hijab - but I interpret it as cover your body by being conservatively dressed and expose less flesh and avoid skin tight clothes which highlight the beauty of ones body. You may then see that men would be less attractive to your physical appearance.

When I started to wear my Hijab, I noticed it myself.

But at the end of the day, its Ones personal choice.

By anonymous• 28 Nov 2008 11:45
anonymous

It is a very simplistic and surficial view to Hijab or no Hijab, or at least non professional advertising. When you advertise you have to take all aspects into consideration. Its insulting non Hijaibis.

I personally do not like the ad at all because it again puts the onus on the woman to somehow change her actions/lifestyle to avoid being harassed. Thats wrong.

Campaigns should be directed @ the males to be honest. Better yet to the social pressures that propogate sexual harassment in the first place.

By Amoud• 27 Nov 2008 16:50

On the cover note, I am harrased most if I am out... and get this.... in niqab.

In most parts, if you put lipstick on a cow men will chase it. They cant see any of me, I could be older than their mother for crying out loud.

It's probably much closer to 100%, as some will never admit to being harassed.

According to a study released by the Egyptian Center for Women's Rights (ECWR) in July, 62 percent of Egyptian men admit to sexually harassing women, and 83 percent of Egyptian women reported being harassed. Half say it happens every day. It was the first study of its kind.

I was also assuming that there were people in this part of the world who are capable of critical thought.

I keep forgetting that most people here have a stone age mindset when it comes to women. Nothing to do with the religion, of course.

By Gypsy• 27 Nov 2008 16:13
Gypsy

Rami, you're forgetting, in this part of the world spousal rape doesn't exist.

But yes, there are many many many reasons ads like these are horsesh!t.

By anonymous• 27 Nov 2008 16:13
anonymous

Ads like this aren't horse sh1t because they insult people's intelligence, they are horse sh1t because they are factually incorrect.

The largest victim group of sexual abuse in almost every culture are young girls under the age of 16.

Across all ages of women who are sexually abused, the perpertrator in most cases is a family member or someone known to the victim.

Do you think that the 10 year Yemeni girl was raped by her husband because she showed too much flesh?

Women in all cultures and across all religions are most at risk from abuse from their fathers, brothers and in-laws.

It is total nonsense aimed at only the most unintelligent amongst us that women just need to cover their hair to prevent being abused by a man.

I fully agree with Scarlett and Amoud, but to give a better idea about what i mean just see at youtube the clip Amish Paradise ( a parody to Gangster paradise ), watch closelly the 2 kids seeing a magazine and the picture they are seeing.

RS/Gypsy: I do think that the best way to show that someone is pure, is not to fall in temptation, if you can't walk in a street without staring at women face or any other part of her body, than, it's your own fault not the women, i advise you guys to read about the 3 legendary monkeys.

if men aren't taught to respect women, the rude stares are going to make you feel naked, even if you're wearing a mumu. it's not the women's problem or issue to solve, and no amount of cloth will change it if men are still not taught this is wrong.

By qwertyness• 27 Nov 2008 13:57
qwertyness

I hate how the entire responsibility for sexual harrassment (and I'm assuming by extention assault) is heaped on the woman! Shouldn't men be taught to control themselves? Taught that it is NOT all right to harrass anyone, regardless of what they are wearing? frankly this ad is demeaning to everyone- to women by blaming them, and to men by saying they are too animalistic to control their baser urges if they (gasp) glimpse an unveiled ear.

Grow up. Ad campaigns like this will do nothing but make the problem worse, and allow people to blame women, sayign they brought harrasment and abuse down on themselves, while the men get off scot free.....to do it again.

By Gypsy• 27 Nov 2008 13:54

Realsomeone men will look at women, if every woman in the world wore a veil, men would still look at them and wonder what's underneath. Many men I know find veiled women MORE attractive because they are mysterious. Ads like these are just horse sh*t

women...in thinking that if they cover..nothing will happen to them

men...that they don't have enough brains (or their brain is in another part of their body!!) to resist the female form and commit a sexual act.

Everyone is responsible for their OWN actions and outside influences should have nothing at all to do with it. People should use the brain God/Allah gave them.

Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked, the good fortune to run into the ones I do,and the eyesight to tell the difference.

Even if a veiled woman gives come come hither looks to a guy, he would not bother about the veil and run after her.. On the other hand, if a modestly dressed unveiled woman walks on the street minding her own business, no one would dare do anything.. It is the way you dress and present yourself.. A meter of rectangular cloth wrapped on your head does not decide whether you are a nun or a prostitute.

As I said, we've discussed this issue regarding the "lolipop" advert..

Whilst some of us may find the advert demeaning to women, we must also realise that it is aimed at a culture / society different to ours. Perhaps there it actuall conveys a potent message..

By Pajju• 27 Nov 2008 12:09
Pajju

I do believe so. If a woman covers completely accordingly to the requirements of Islam and sunnah (tradition of the Prophet) - she is not exposing any of her beauty which may cause lust and desire in men. Nevertheless, there may be some sick men who will feel sexually aroused seeing covered women - but as majority of men are stimulated by the woman's outlook, in general - covering does protect women. So do nuns wear special attire. There will be of course exceptions from this rule, but these are exceptions.

I could also imagine this scenario:

the "western" looking girls theme: "free to choose"

the "veiled" girls: controlled and downtrodden.

see? No one is right, and no one is wrong. All advertising is, to some extent, blatant propoganda.

that is your view Gypsy, i think its not propaganda but reality ask the men they are more likely to give a second look to uncovered women then the covered.

It's crap and religious blackmail. Even worse it attempts to offer a very superficial answer to a serious problem ie: sexual harrassment.

By Formatted Soul• 27 Nov 2008 11:36

I think it’s offensive more than anything. Especially because unveiled girls are bad candy that has been contaminated and is filthy, while veiled girls resemble the wrapped good looking candy.

And it’s just one more example of religious blackmail!
