Hello! Who had been in zubara? Is it possible to go their with a saloon car? Can I go in on Fridays, or I can only see it from outside?
Is there anything else in the area to see?
Thanks for your reply!
I have been using this site for a while before i even came to Doha, it basicly an interactive tour of some places in Qatar which is awesome! There is an interactive tour of a Zubara fort from the inside and outside and in rooms. http://qatarpano.com/and there is a map view http://qatarpano.com/map Zed
Just went out to Al Zubara fort again today. Wanted to add that a good landmark on highway 1 (Shamal/North) to tip you off to the road to Al Zubara is a Hypermarket strip mall/petrol station on the left side of the road (traveling north). Right around 50 km from Doha. You have to do a u-turn to get onto the Al Zubara road. They're also building a bridge/overpass at that junction right now. Once you get on that road to Al Zubara, you'll immediately see a small "shantytown" of mobile trailer homes which appear to be temporary lodging for the highway workers. I immagine they'll be there for a while. It's a great afternoon jaunt.
Drove out to Al Zubara Fort last Sunday. Great trip and it was an interesting site to visit. However, there are absolutely NO road signs, highway signs, street signs, or any other indication of which road to take after North Road (highway 1). Count the kilometers from Doha (something like 50 to 55 km) and then start watching for a road that bears off to the west. North Road is totally under construction (as are most in this country) and apparently all the highway signs were taken down, at least those that pointed the way to Al Zubara. It was worth the trip, a great old fort. Saw some herds of camels along the way; goats and a goat herder near the fort. Lot of great photo opportunities. The caretaker comes out of his trailer domicile and hands you the keys for the small "museum" inside, and you guide yourself. At the end, have a small tip available for the caretaker. He'll probably be waiting near the gate on your way out.
As far as i remember i had gone in a saloon car way back in 2000 so its cool theres a caretaker who lives in a portacabin ova there and hell show u around .
You can normally visit on Friday, although you might want to miss prayer time. There is a caretaker with a key and you need to find him to let you in. Check out the well when you are inside. There is a display also, but it's not very good. The road there is excellent and virtually devoid of traffic. There are other forts in the area but you need a four wheel drive to get them. You might want to head on up the coast - there are some picturesque boats in Al Ruweis, and a nice harbour, but that's about it if you are stuck to the roads.
