Ethiopian woman Alemintu Girma Hailu.

'Housemaid's body finally flown home'

By Bassma Al Jandaly, Staff Reporter
Published: November 11, 2008, 00:11

Ras Al Khaimah: The body of a housemaid which was kept at the morgue for the past two months, finally went home on Monday with the help of Gulf News readers.

The body is of Alemintu Girma Hailu, the Ethiopian woman who was kept at the morgue since September 10. The body went on Ethiopian Airlines early at 4.30am.

Readers helped in repatriating the body because the sponsor and a recruitment agency were pointing fingers at each other and refused to pay the expenses of repatriating the body the cost of which was not more than Dh5,000.

One reader approached the Ras Al Khaimah Naturalisation and Residency Department (RNRD) to finalise the process of cancelling the woman's visa and other paper work.

The body was earlier sent to Al Maktoum Hospital on Monday for embalming.

Readers said RNRD officials and Ras Al Khaimah police donated large amounts of money to the family of the housemaid.

A reader said the sponsor had done nothing except just send her passport to the RNRD with his driver.

Lt Ali Bahlool at the domestic helper dispute section at RNRD, finalised the documents to cancel a visa. Dr Lt Ali Mohammad Al Kubalti, consultant of forensic medicine at Ras Al Khaimah police, helped in finalising all documents to repatriate the body.

Alemintu's family in Ethiopia, said they were devastated over the death of their elder daughter.

"We are a poor family and we have sent our daughter to work in the UAE to help support us in our harsh life," her father told Gulf News on the phone.

He said his wife, brothers and sisters cried day and night for the past two months.

Alemintu came to work for a family in Ras Al Khaimah, but fell ill after a few days of her arrival. She worked only for two weeks with an Arab family.

This is indeed shocking!!

how cheap of them.

The police should have forced the sponsor to take care of this.

Dear Alexa,

Don't take what I said personaly, you live in a arabic country and u know better than me that people there have no respect for others...so u can understand that I have the right to say my advice.

So try to be more tolerant dear Alexa.

That’s pathetic, the very first action should be taken by the police is to cancel the business license of the man power supplier. I have seen in most of the cases these suppliers bring people and earn money from their hard work… so the very first responsibility towards any such type of mishap goes to the recruitment agency

but since the case was in other country it was difficult to reach the concern authorities in RAK... I was following her news for the past 2-3 weeks....

only thing still shocking to me is how come RAK police did not put the culprit (whoever was responsible for her) behinds the bars ??

I will tell you why because this girl was for the poor family and she had no one in UAE to follow her case...

If you remember the recently a murder of one a Labnese singer happened in Dubai and the news become International,,,, even Dubai police approached Egypt and other Countries to catch the culprits ... why ?? because that singer was from a powerful family ....

What a sad destiny !

Im shocked that things like that happen in a islamic country!

...but no wonder, they are bedouin and can't know what is respect!

May Allah gives the serenity to her family.

poor girl, may she rest in peace. i cant believe people care more about "who pays the bill', than the sudden death of a young girl, the sponsor and agency shouldve just halved the cost.

So Sad..This case is really awful

I know that Ethopian get special traetment in Gulf countries..Beacause the historical reasons. I even heard that Ethopians do not get executed in KSA but get life in prison for murder.. The reason for this purely that the King of Absenia gave refuge to the first Arab immigrants of Islam. Ethopia or Khabsha has never been attacked bu muslim rulers..

There is a saying in Arabic "كما تدين تدان" and one day something will happen to them and no one will lend out a hand to them.

I was talking about cases in Qatar to my sister and she mentioned that there were a lot of Nepali workers who have been terminated from work, but their sponsors do not want to pay for their tickets back home. I think we should look into this matter as well and maybe send these poor workers back to their families. The ticket is about QR1,150/- which is peanuts to make families happy.

Lets discuss it SPEED.

May Allah help all those in need.

responsibility of the 'Sponsor' now since she was not directly hired by the Arab Family instead they took her from the 'Recruitment Agency' on contract ...

now what was the understanding between Agency and the Arab Family is not clear..

Regardless all this ... I was sad to see how inhuman one can be just for the sake of money ? she was very young '19 yrs' and belongs to very poor family ....

Saw similar cases in Saudi. One morgue had quite a number of Bangladeshi bodies because the Sponsor didn't want to foot the bill and the government couldn't afford it.

I strongly feel that the national airlines of the countries concerned should provide this service free of charge.

huh?! heat stroke?! maybe it was easy for them to say it was a heat stroke than to investigate and castigate somebody from the locale.

if they didnt care to attend her body when she was dead, i wonder how she was taken care by these "responsible" people(sponsor and agency) while she was admitted in the hospital.

i wonder what standards of a justice system their government applied on this? i bet, its the standard justice system for the expatriate, where no person will be held liable and responsible for her life.

its so sad...

Alemintu spent two months in the hospital in coma before she died on October 9. Her body is still at the morgue waiting to be sent home but with the help of good Samaritans, the body could be repatriated this week.

Alemintu worked only two weeks for the Arab family in Ras Al Khaimah when she was admitted to Ebrahim Bin Obaid Allah hospital in Ras Al Khaimah for heat stroke.
