Egypt sheikh backs women's right to beat husbands
Sunni Islam's highest authority has approved a woman's right to fight back if her husband uses violence against her, Egypt's Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper reported on Monday.
The declaration by Sheikh Abdel Hamid Al-Atrash, who heads Al-Azhar University's committee for fatwas or religious rulings, comes after similar rulings by religious leaders in Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
"A wife has the legitimate right to hit her husband in order to defend herself," Sheikh Abdel was quoted as saying.
"Everyone has the right to defend themselves, whether they are a man or a woman... because all human beings are equal before God," he said.
Over the last few days, Saudi Sheikh Abdel Mohsen Al-Abyakan stressed the fact that a wife should resort to "the same kind of violence" as her husband used against her, whether it be with a leather strap or a wire cable, the paper said.
Turkish Sheikh Fathallah Julun went one step further and ruled that a woman should return the violence with interest.

Rights groups quoted by Amnesty International say that 35 percent of Egyptian women killed per year die as a result of domestic violence.

Well put. The other thing to realise is that this "fatwa" is a type of reminder to men that women should not and must not be abused.

and anyway, as i gathered from previous threads, you do not have to always follow what these sheikHs says. we are given intellect so we must use it. key word is COMMON SENSE.

Well all I know is that if my grandmother had ever hit her husband back she would have been dead as a doornail two seconds later.

I'm talking about an experience, someone i know was having the same issue and both were beating each other ... the end was indeed the divorce but after what? 3 kids in between and the eldest is around 13 years old ... It's just so sad ...
It's kind of a circle, the kid sees his dad beating up his mom as his dad believes that it's his right while it is not. Some do something about it, instead of being bad guys like their fathers they do the opposite and get a better life for their families, but the others continue this circle of violence and do the same :(

I would have interpreted it as "if you think someone is planning to kill you, make your move, kill him first". So, what's the use of laws? Throw it away and tell every woman that if they are beaten by their spouse, don't go to court or to elders, just shot the man and stop the abuse>

Yes but King Edshel, you and I and everyone knows full well that in a situation where a husband is beating a wife and she hits back, it isn't going to stop the fight, or hurt the husband, it's going to end up with the wife getting more hurt and possibly killed.
it seems that this violence became part of many families lives :S, that is why he accepting this fact because sadly it is happening and based on that he said, they got the right to defend themselves ...

violence can not be cured by violence. Compassion is already a very rare commodity nowadays. They accepted more the saying tooth for a tooth. If they want to push thru with this ruling, then they should just abolish courts because it will just be the "jungle law of survival".

Unfortunately if a man is beating the hell out of his wife, the war has already started. The abuser can probably manage to work on his "togethernes", after he has removed his fist from her face, thats if she manages to surive the incident. The point here is a lot of men think its acceptable for a man to hit a woman and she has to accept it, because she probably did something to deserve it. The sheikh is stating that no its not ok, and its ok for a woman to defend herself if the need arises. This is a refreshing opinion, and advice, epsecially from a sheikh..

The sad thing is that many women think like you, but when the get into an abusive relationship, they allow their partner to abuse them..
