Have just been to Garveys - what a dump.... thank goodness I never paid to join. It is dirty and horrible, And the drinks cost an absolute fortune. Just my opinion.

sorry you did not make it in ............ it just proves, no matter how dingy the place, it still has standards to keep LOL

gypsy, i would be turned off on the place too if I saw that! Guess I just havn't been there late enough or something. Just from my experience, it didn't deserve such a bad wrap. Sounds to me like the rugby club is a nice compromise, I will try that.

I wouldn't take my kids there...although loads do, they run in between the alcoholics legs.

------> Gypsy you got to make it first before taking it there or anywhere in that matter !!!

I usually go on Thursdays at 7 with a mate. It's a nice 40 minute walk from where we live, especially as the weather is improving :o)

Note, our bethobed betheren take the area by the door. The western contingent take the other end. The place was packed last week!

Did you Google it first?

I don't think they are trying to be what so many here want it to be. It's just a pub/bar whatever. A place to drink with friends and not go broke. The Euro family name thing,ok thats a streach but maybe made it easier to get a liquor liscence. Like some sort of glorified front, idk. Whoever said rig-pigs made me LOL! The expensive hotel bars have the same tho except these are the ones that indisciminatly bolw thier pay on expensive lifestyle. Plus you get these popped-colar, greasy pre-madonna types at expensive places. Maybe i just look at it diffrent bc im not really looking to meet people at bars and could care less about bright lights and sh*ty techno.

spose its what you want really! To call itself a European family club is a disgrace to Europeans. Most Europeans wouldn't join a dump like that! Has anyone been to the Brit Club in Abu Dhabi? Now thats what I call a proper place, Garveys could do well to check it out!

Gypsy, actually that description of the clientele couldn't be more right and thats a fact! Family membership.....ermmm that just gives you the right to swim in the murky pool and thats it....nah, you get what you pay for....its not a family place at all, the so called 'kids area' is dangerous and the swings etc are broken......yuck...

Garvey's is a hole, it's where rig pigs and alcoholic Brits go to drink and smoke themselves into a stupor. Best to avoid unless you fit the above description.

Hi

despite my experiences, I would still go to Garveys, in terms of the smoke, you can sit outside which is ok now the weather is cooler. Good food, cheap drinks, just be aware of some of the clientele - perhaps simply go earlier. And to the person who said they doubted there were hookers there, I am not the most worldly person, but trust me, if they weren't h'kers, they looked awfully like them.

Never been, and probably won't bother now given all the comments here! Unfortunately - there aren't that many places to go to in Doha - so I guess you just have to take it for what it is, somewhere to hang out/have a drink, if you drink...

Newsflash!! You are in a Muslim country and have a place to drink! We should all be rejoicing!! :). I agree that it is not the nicest place in the world, but at least I have a place to get a draft, cheeseburger, and throw some darts.

i was considering going to garveys sometime, as i am new to qatar, however after reading the above, i think i will stick to the ramada.

ladies of the nite and smoke don't appeal to me. i don;t mind poorly maintained decor, as you get what you pay for, but hookers giving evils to my wife is not my idea of a fun evening!

............ the drinks are expensive? compared to what?

(OK Rugby Club excepted)

The next cheapest drinks I know about are either those you drink at home from the bulk stores, or those drunk by some QLSG members at other peoples parties!!!! (when they go to those places to 'trash')

And I wont disagree about you not liking the place, that's a matter of opinion, and yes it does have it's down points. I am sure the Ritz may well be more your style, but compare the cost of membership.

You gets what you pay for!!!

baldrick .....is the Old Manor at Sofitel (Mercure)?

Had a horrible sore throat on Thursday from all the smoke in there - not thealthy AT ALL!

They also put the prices up since Ramadan. Old Manor is now same price :o)

Rugby club is still cheaper at 22 for Killkenny.

jjj5, we are very rare coming to Garvey's in the late side. Most of the time in the weekend friday - saturday in late afternoonish till early evening to take son for a swim.

I do suggest you ask one of the staffs that you want to speak to Melvin or Chris. Have a word with one of them, hopefully they will so something about it. Not a very nice image for 'a family club' image.

my husband just said a pint of kilkenny draft QR 25 in Garveys and he said in some hotels charging 40 plus for the same drink.

Hi not sure how they got in, there were at least 4/5 of them looking identical and were throwing serious predatory glances at any men who seemed to be on their own.

However, I would definitely go again, but perhaps call it quits before 10ish which is when I felt the mood of the place changed.

By novita77• 25 Oct 2008 16:28

jjj75, how can that 'lady of the night' pass through the security?

I think if you make a complain to one of Garvey's brother they will do something about it. I know most of the time either Melvin or Chris always out and about in the area looking after the operational.

Quite right exiledsaint, just what I said. To be honest they only thing that put me off were the so obvious hookers, if they were pleasant I would not mind but one just wandered over to our table and dragged a chair away without even bothering to ask whether anyone was sitting there - which would have been obvious if she had even looked at us (a full drink was in front of the chair, just my friend had gone to the ladies). I made a sarcastic comment about her taking the chair. We were then subjected to stares and comments for quite some time. What is the point of the doorman if he let these women in (and I really mean it when I say they looked like h'kers, tight revealing clothese, insane over the top makeup). Not sure why I am so worked up by it, but I really want to like Garveys and it lent an unpleasant flavour to the evening.

the one i cant stand is how smokey the inside is. These brit smoker expats must feel like in heaven. They couldnt smoke indoor anywhere in the pub back in the UK but they can smoke like chimney indoor inside Garvey's.

Either you were very drunk and can't count or the you were dreaming of sheep..... Its the cheapest place in town along with the rugby club, a pint of stella is 25 and in the irish bar its 37. When I did maths the higher number meant it cost more. Food is not bad and a good price as well, however it is not the most salbrious place.

I agree with both points of view. I went last week and although I had a good time, it really could do with a lick of paint. However, although the menu was limited, the food was very good and compared to other places in Qatar, the drinks were cheap.

However, as the night wore on the flavour of the place changed, dare I say turned a little unseemly - I am convinced that the table next to us with sour faced women, were 'ladies of the night' I personally don't usually mind tht type of thing, but if looks could kill I would be dead by now. Perhaps they did want me dead so they could try it on with my husband???!!!
