Do you think DOHA will ever reach a US way of life or even a European way of life. Most probably, everyboday will say no. However, I see this from a diff view and it is a YES. lets discuss.......
If you don't like, you can leave- I think this is weakest argument people can give to defend their weakness...
One thing still I could not figure out that most of expat from UK and USA praises Qatar where as rest (like from Philippine, India, Pakistan etc) poor one's view is just opposite...what is hidden truth ....
Im born/bred American... perfectly thrilled that I hold an American passport and am as patriotic as anyone else.
But, why should Qatar follow in the US or Europes footsteps... no point. Qatar as with any other country picks up best practices from other countries. Thats the idea of growth and development. The US and Europe should pickup some points from Middle East!
I've moved countries to experience what else is out there... more than most Americans choose to do because of our own comforts and security sitting in our own backyard. Growing up in schoo, we focused on US History and knowing the state capitals.... much of the rest of the world knew more about the US and other countries (not only just simple geography) than we did.
The joy of it being relatively 'easy' to work in the Middle East is a blessing for us...
If we're not happy here.. we can leave. Simple.
No one (country) should follow another .... just learn from the good and the bad.
Being born and raised in the US I can tell you that Qatar is coming out of the dark ages slowly. There are good and bad in all countries. To say the US is all good or bad is a stupid statement. But we have evolved into a great nation that still has problems. What was the saying, all civilizations fall? The US has fallen many times and reinvented itself, better each time. I see Qatar trying to emerge and having growing pains just like we did with the imported workers. We imported workers from Africa, here they import workers from India, Indonesia, and the Phillipeans. Not really a whole lot of difference as they are paid meager salries, and poor accomodations.
Why on earth would you want Qatar to be like the USA or Europe - the whole point of living in a country like this for me is to experience a completely different culture to what I am used to. Yes Qatar would benefit with some human rights practices and some equality for all but apart from that why would you want this gem of a nation to become westernized?!?! How boring if all the world becomes the same...
The US is known for being a hub for investors all over the world...look at the recent financial crisis..it started in the US and almost all countries were affected because they all had investments in the US
Askme you are right ...Qataries wants it to become like EU or US but bcz of those who you mention i think it will become second bombay otherwise if in future most places will be taken by educated Qataries then maybe some changes. otherwise bombayrela! lol
Ask me, why do you say it's becoming like India or the Philippines? Just because more and more people from those countries are coming to Qatar doesn't mean Qatar is going to be like it.
I don't see any sign of Qatar becoming like USA or EU..
rather I see it becoming like India or Phillipe..
Wake up..... just road and building does not make country like USA or EU....
You need to have human respect and value. Quality of life, justice, equality, education, fair and just society, individual right, press freedom... these are few things which USA and EU have or trying their best to improve it,
where as in Qatar.. you can tell me... yourself...
I remember my days back in Boston and virginia and compare them to here. I wish I could go back and live in the states. I call it the land of services. No country ever developed services the way the US does. I think the US is even far more developed than Europe. The US has more freedome and rights for even non-citizens than in Europe and thats what makes it a first choice for foreign investors

brin is right. I second that. If one dont like the place then he can simply leave.
Agree with TxsBigfoot and Britexpat....

This is Qatar and not USA, Canada, UK or Australia..
They will develop differently. Will probably adopt some "Western" aspects and retain a lot of their own culture.
Why should they want to be like someone else???

First choice for foreign investors? The US?
