Moving to Qatar - May I request for guidance?

Hi friends,

I am holding 2 offers in Qatar. Am an Executive Secretary with 17 years experience. Currently I work and live with family in OMAN, with following perks (converted to equivalent Qatar Rials):-

- Basic salary of QR 5,000 per month.
- Fully furnished 2-bedroom family flat by compay.
- Transportation by company.
- Medical by company.
- Air Ticket for self + wife + 1 child once in 2 years.

For personal reasons, my family is settling back in India. I want to move to Qatar on a "Single Status". Currently I have 2 offers, with following terms:-

First Offer:-

- Basic Salary of QR 7,000 per month.
- Single room by company.
- Transportation by company.
- Medical by company.
- Air ticket once in a year.

Second Offer:-

- Basic Salary (TO BE DECIDED).
- Accommodation: by employee.
- Transporation by company.
- Medical by company.
- Air ticket once in a year.

Now, may I request any one of our dear Qatar veteran friends to enlighten me on the following:-

- Rent for a DECENT single room for a bachelor.
- Cost of drink and dine for a month.
- Approx. air ticket cost for Qatar-Chennai-Qatar.
- What should be the expected basic salary?

I apologize for being so inquisitive, but it is very bewildering to think of shifting to an alien place with blindfolded eyes!!

Waiting with crossed fingers... Thank you!!

Would you be kind enough Binu, to throw some light on my ignorance on "Shopping Mall Ban"? I am yet to figure out as to what you mean by "Bachelors are not allowed in Shopping Malls during weekends".

Do you mean all through Thursday/Fridays, single men are not allowed to shop? Or, is there any specific timings allotted for "Family Shopping Fun".

Could be great if someone can shed some light.

Thanks.

Of course, you were the first to reply to me Formatted Soul. Thanks. I will take your advice sincerely.

Probably I might look for QR 9,500 + Single status accommodation from the company. That would be optimal, as you told aptly - with at least 50% entertainment!!

Qatar expats are great. At least they have got the courtesy to reply. I am overwhelmed.

I don't compare Oman with Qatar here. But, by far Qatar is much more professional. (Hopefully lesser "regional" politics in offices; thanks to the cosmopolitan population).

Good day.

Thanks a lot for your concern Ram. But, I have got to move elsewhere, if not to Qatar. Because, I will be losing a lot on perquisites.

My family is relocating back to India soon. I wil be living alone, even if I decide to stay in Muscat. But my compay won't compensate on sacrificing the family status. Hence, I would end up living deserted in a two bedroom apartment all alone, where I could make some cash if provided with HRA.

However, I am not moving to Qatar yet. Just started thinking of benefiting from getting back to Single Status.

Mr. Ram. Grass on the other side is always green. Muscat (Oman) is not that fabulous place to live in as you might think. Of course, yeah. You have lot of spiritual places of worship; lesser hassles; and of course MUCH MUCH lesser money as well.

Thanks.

Both offers dont look very good for a person with 17 yrs experience including gulf Experience. Cost of living is much higher than in Oman.

If you are planning to live here without your family, you might spend QR.2000/- excluding rent/accommodation…..with little or no entertainments. Still you got 5K balance. Negotiate little more on your Basic….maybe a couple of thousands more.
