Woman on trial in for drinking juice

A 28-year-old Russian female, who visited Dubai on a tourist visa, and a 30-year-old male citizen of Lebanon, a salesman in a local store, were put on trial for drinking juice in a public place in the daytime during Muslim fasting.

The police caught the two people red-handed at a gas station in Dubai, Emirat.ru reports with reference to Gulf News.

In accordance with the Federal Penal Code of the United Arab Emirates, a public intake of food and beverages during daytime hours of the month of Ramadan is forbidden by Article 313. The article stipulates the punishment in the form of either a monetary penalty – up to 2,000 dirhems ($555) – or even a term of up to one month in prison.

The young people told the court that they were not Muslims and were thus unaware of the fact that their actions could be punishable.

The court took the mitigating circumstances into consideration, but found the defendants guilty, since ignorance did not exclude responsibility. The court ruled that the young people must pay the fine of 1,000 dirhems ($278) each.

The case became the first one in Dubai in violation of Article 313 since the beginning of the month of Ramadan on September 1.

Thousands of foreigners from Europe and Asia reside in the emirate of Dubai, the major tourist center of the Persian Gulf . Dubai is known as a relatively liberal region in comparison with other territories of the UAE. Tourists can be seen in the streets wearing shorts, whereas alcoholic beverages can often be available in bars and hotels.

This year, however, the authorities intend to remind all residents and guests of the emirate that they are staying on the territory of a Muslim country. There have been quite a number of incidents recently when the local police in plain clothes arrested women sunbathing topless, nudists and other violators of public order.

Many tourists acknowledge that that they do not always understand how they should behave in Dubai.

Guide-books advise tourists should always carry their IDs, or better their copies, with them for the majority of police officers wear plain clothes and can be rather meticulous in their inspections.

I know some very nice (human) and highly intellectual Imans, too, platao. And they do like humans (insan) and life. I think they are "good" Muslims. Cheers.

One year later i met a pacifist orthodox jew, who was always helping the refugees

Scarlet: Yes, i know it :)

ohright: Yeaps, fully agree with you, i even suggested here at forum, on another topic, that they should allow women to use sexier outfits, just to truelly show to Allah that they are truelly devot and that doesn't matter to them if someone is eating or not or if that girl is in bikini, they'll just pass by.

MD: I was in Morocco, i saw several couples kissing in the street, but because i'm a foreigner, if i and my girl would be caught kissing she would be in deep sh**t because PDA's are only forbidden for some, no not the computer ;)

I also had the chance of meeting 2 Imans, at a peace conference, and we went to dinner and they enjoyed drinking wine, and 1 of them was afraid of drinking and the other told him to drink and don't be afraid because they weren't at an islamic country.

Please note that the 2 folks i'm refering are the religious leaders of 2 islamic embassies on another islamic country, both were Sheiks.

and further more, platao, when you finally make it into a Muslim country don't be surprised to see how many Muslims break the rules of qur'an!

By ohright• 26 Sep 2008 20:22

what a stupid law. like scarlett said- anyone who is fasting should be devout enough to do so without forcing others to do the same. tolerance is one thing- forcing others to your ways is another completely. a good example of lack of tolerance- I can respect the religion of islam without being forced to fast with them. and how about THEIR tolerance of others and other religions!? sure, it IS their country, but at the same time, all the expats working here are helping them become wealthy- as it is apparent (or so it seems- only been here a short time) that there are very few natives who have the education, skill, and dare i say work ethic, to get the damn gas out of the ground

no, platao, it basically is a crime to come to a Muslim country without knowing the qur'an in and out. Whatever you do can be used against you because there is a clause in the book. So, for all those tourists, it is essential that you learn qur'an, make a test on your knowledge, and when you have graduated you may think of visiting a Muslim country.

those aseptic boxes are really good for doing that...you can really shoot far distances...especially when you aren't trying!!

They were quite bewildered, but quickly put the sandwiches away. It's hard to imagine why they are prosecuting the woman in Dubai. I wonder if she refused to put the juice down or something?

everyone makes mistakes and to punish those who do not know the rules is not right...explain and give them a chance to change...if they do not change, THEN punish them...

Ok...had to laugh also..can you imagine what those poor guys were wondering?? I mean they come to a country that had no food places open during the day...and didn't know why!!!

Last year at Ramadan I was walking through Landmark mall during the day and saw 2 chinese men sitting at a table in Starbucks--which was closed. They had sandwiches from somewhere and were about to begin eating. Did I call the police? Of course not, I simply went over and attempted to explain that it was improper for them to be eating in public. This was done all in gestures as they spoke very little English. They were in Doha for business and did not know the rules.

that just ridiculous...

Honestly, if someone is a firm believer in their own faith and it involves them abstaining from food and drink, then seeing someone else eat or drink in front of them will not have any effect upon their sacrifice.
