Daily Mail

A road rage driver was burned to death after ramming another vehicle and setting her own car on fire by furiously revving her engine, it emerged today.

Serena Sutton-Smith, 54, had deliberately driven into the back of Paula Small's stationary car and then refused to get out of her Vauxhall Nova as she sat with her foot on the accelerator.

Sparks caused when a front tyre disintegrated and the wheel dug into the road, ignited brake fluid in her engine and set the vehicle alight.

The victim was so overcome with anger she refused to get out of her burning car and even threatened a would-be rescuer who tried to persuade her.

Ms Sutton-Smith, who suffered from drastic mood swings caused by bi-polar disorder, had failed to appreciate the danger she was in because of her mental condition, coroner Alan Crickmore said.

Fire officer Andrew Clayton said when the blaze was extinguished it was clear the woman inside was already dead.

‘The circumstances indicate this was a deliberate act,’ he said. ‘She remained in the vehicle after ramming a car and then sat with the front wheels spinning until fire developed.

is that your medical opinion?

i dont think thats a fair comment...british society is certainly high pressured with such over regulation, surveilance, intrusive policies and ridiculous cost of living, with f**ed up divorce and child maintanence laws, but most of us manage to get by with relativley few problems, psychogically, and its not really helpful to paint a whole people with the one brush is it? im british and ive spent my whole life fighting/resisting racism, sexism and prejudice in all its forms cos ive seen enough and lived in the truely diverse culture of london most of my life to know that its all b***ks.

this incident is very sad but these things happen everywhere, and it s practially impossible to make a judgement call wih such little info.

QT; i wouldnt say any of those things, probably some kind of mental illness, in the loosest sense taht crazy people are usually just unhappy and that to heal they need to find and deal with what it is taht has caused it a la CBT...figure you gotta be unhinged seriously offkey to murder your own kids yknow. cant see how society or sociological phenomenon can be to blame for that.

Britexpat; think that mainstream psychological diagnosis is fundamentally flawed and that trying to categorise people in the way they do is often very unhelpful, that said the medical system obviously has a need to quantify symptoms, treatments, from friends who work in psych wards even they find teh system frustrating and flawed.

Recommending reading 'Self and Others' by RDLaing for interesting insights in to mental illness'

OK Rant over

Man kills daughters before hanging self

LONDON: A man believed to have killed his two young daughters before committing suicide phoned their mother to say “the children have gone to sleep forever,” a family friend said.

Mechanic David Cass, 33, is thought to have smothered three-year-old Ellie and 14-month-old Isobel on Sunday night in a caravan parked where he worked in Southampton.

He then went inside Paynes Road Car Sales garage area and hanged himself.

Family friend Val Frasier said the children’s mother, Kerry Hughes, had called police after receiving the call from her former boyfriend.

Cass was caring for the youngsters for the first time after an acrimonious split with Hughes about four months ago. He had picked them up on Saturday morning.

“She had a phone call from her husband (sic). He apparently said to her ‘the children have gone to sleep forever and I’m going to hang myself’,” Val Frasier said.

Hughes’s best friend Emma Timberlake said Cass told his ex-girlfriend he would kill himself on Friday.

Police raced to the garage at about 6.50pm and forced open the gates to get inside but the three were already dead.

A Hampshire police spokesman said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths.

Cass, 32, had worked at the garage for four years, according to his boss John Martin, but resigned on Friday.

Martin said Cass had seemed depressed over the last few weeks because of relationship problems with his girlfriend, who lives in the Fair Oak area of Eastleigh, Hampshire. -Agencies

I know why they changed the term from Manic Depressive to Bi-Polar, but I think the old name would have warranted more caution.

Also, these people should be under supervisory care. She could have killed another person in her state.

Although, a sad story, luckily, no-one else was seriously injured!
