Giving birth in Al Ahli Hospital

Flavia
By Flavia

Hello,

i'm 4 months pregnant and i have been seeing Dr. Najla at Al Ahli hospital. I plan to give birth there and i really aprecciate some considerations from women who had delivered there. How was the deliver? It was normal labour or c-section? Are the nurses well prepared to take care of the babies?? Please, any information will be very important.
Thanks

If you have the money to pay they'll let any give birth there! I'm not aware of any filipino doctor in ob-gyn though.

No idea about Spanish speakers. There are several Iraqis, an Indian, a German man. We've found Dr. Sujartha (spelling?) to be the best so far.

Please note one severe drawback of Al Ahli is that they never seem to have rotas for the doctors more than a couple of weeks in advance, and the new rotas are only released a couple of days in advance. This means that making future appointments with the doctor you want is a pain in the ass, especially if you're restricted to the hours you can get to the hospital.

Thanks for the information tallg

Could you recomend me an obstetric in Al Ahli (we prefer spanish speaker, if it's possible)to make an appointment for my wife..

If I recall correctly, the cost of delivery in Al Ahli QR10,900. A c-section is QR18,000.

But you also have to pay QR300 every time you have an appointment, QR400 for a radiology scan, plus all the tests.

So far (36 weeks) it has come to ~QR5,000.

So let's estimate the total cost to be ~QR18-20,000 (assuming everything goes smoothly).

Thanks for your help

Chelsea...a 'baby friendly initiative hospital' doesn't actually allow a bottle anywhere near a baby, not even a dummy......they would never ever recommend a bottle even if the baby was starving......this apparently is seen as elite practice amongst maternity hospitals...I'm no breast feeding police but it sounds as if they need to do some reading on the physiology of lactation.

Man oh man

By reading all the responses to this thread, It makes wonder, Why is so difficult to get a simple answer to a question, Which is the best hospital available to give a live birth?

Dammed people, you are not dealing with a veterinary clinic for animals in the middle of the desert or some witch doctor.

You are dealing with humans beings with feelings and legitimize concerns as future mothers and fathers.

Get it right people for once, just share your experience and move on.

Actually they recommended giving him formula as well as trying to breastfeed as it took quite a long time for it to happen. Obviously it was better for him to be on formula then starving whilst waiting for my body to adjust. So yes - they were a 'baby friendly initiative' hospital.

Sorry but you have to make your own mind up about something as important as where you have your baby - don't just listen to a bunch of strangers on the internet.

I can't comment on Hamad hospital because I've never been there but I can comment on Al Ahli...

I delivered my first baby there 4 days ago... and I can honestly say they were absolutely fantastic. The nurses and midwives there are amazing - they are so friendly and really look after the babies well. Because it's my first baby I asked a million questions and they were really helpful about everything I wanted to know. I chose to have my little one in with me all the time so they were constantly popping in to check how I was and make sure things were going ok.

I had told the nurses I wanted to breastfeed and they were really helpful - making sure I knew what to do and how often to do it. They suggested I gave him formula to begin with as well as breast milk to make sure he was getting everything he needed but as soon as he was feeding well off we stopped the formula. They never tried to make me do anything - and I was allowed to be with him all the time. I went with him for his baths so I could see how they did it (I really wanted to make sure I knew how to do everything properly before coming home and having to do it all myself!!).

As standard they give them an eye test, hearing test and vaccinations and they give you all their cards when you get discharged to show what was done and when. I doubt very much they let a baby be discharged without following all the normal proceedures.

And yes it is like staying in a hotel... child birth isn't exactly the most pleasant process in the world and if you get the option to recover in luxury (well as luxurious as a hospital can be!) then why would you opt for less?

Again - I suggest you talk first hand to people who have been through it all. Don't listen to third hand gossip. If anyone wants to know anything about my experience at Al Ahli then PM me - I would recommend the hospital to anyone and wouldn't hesitate to go back for the next one(!).

I know there are people that have had bad experiences at both hospitals, but for the majority of cases either hospital would be fully equipped to handle a normal delivery. (And for the record Al Ahli DO have a NICU!)

my wife ended up having an emergency C section because one of the doctors gave her the wrong injection (we heard our main doctor tell the doctor in question that she made a mistake).

we were speaking with another couple a week ago and the same mistake almost happened with them except the husband had been reading a lot so when the doctor went to give his wife something, he questioned why/what and stopped the doctor.

also, if you want to breast feed, they don't know what they are doing. make sure you get the lactation consultant. the nurses will try to constantly push formula on your baby (which seems to be what most people around here want anyways, but it is not as good for the baby).

Hamad MEdical corp is far more experienced than Al Ahli but Alahli's service is better (service does not mean diagnosis)

for a normal delivery then Alahli should be your first choice but if complications were to happen then Alahli might put you or your babe in an ambulance and send you to Hamad Medical corp.

the choice is yours

i deliver my baby last year in hamad hospital and i m fully satisfied from the experience and preparation of the taking care of new born.

they ll check eye site, hearing and all other necessary treatment of young one.

but at the same time our relative had given birth to a new baby in alahli hospital, nd i m sorry to say that they have nt checked his eye site nd any other necessary check up and after 2 month she was gone to hamad for vaccination and she was surprised to c that her baby had a visual problem, nd on the age of 5 mnths her baby had 2 laser operatin of eye nd he is wearing glasses for life time.

I really agree from scorpio79&supernurse.

i'd just like to say that i gave birth at al ahli 5 months ago by planned c section. my baby decided to come earlier than expected and was in nicu for 3 days. i think al ahli is a fantastic hospital with competent staff. i never worried about my health or my babies as i felt secure we were in good hands.

hamad hospital is very dangerous, just last week a woman died in labour because her doctor didnt turn up due to being drunk. i never go to hamad hospital for anything.

I'm about to give birth in a few months, and if only i have the choice i would prefer to go home & give birth there. In my opinion, even though the hospital facilities are complete, but if you are not well taken cared of by the staff & doctor, it's useless. Government hospitals are still, training hospitals. ON the other side, being in a 1st class hospital does not mean you've got the best doctors. Everyone has different experiences. Some encouraged me to go to Hamad, some discouraged me..same thing with Al Ahli. I've heard many bad & good stories from each hospitals, but i chose the one with the OBGYNE who was recommended to me by a friend, and trusting my doctor matters to me most.

pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease your confusing you self so much,i had my first baby in hamad very bad experience i stayed even in the private section were nurses were very bad and all they cared about was filling there papers it was next to impossible to have a contact with the doctor, they have good equipment but imagine they signed me on papers to do c section without even letting me inform inform my mom who was just outside the door and even my husband is outside the whole section, that time it was only doha clinic and they didn't have a nicu but i heard they have now may westerners at that time had baby in doha clinic and they told me they were taken care of very well ,i guess al ahli is also good and the doctors were working originally in hamad actually,in short if baby is ok and his size is fine and you don't have any complications try the private sector if any problem just then go to hamad,do not worry enjoy your pregnancy please

Hi, I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl on 21st September 2008 in Al-Alhi. I have to say that the experience was really good. I was two weeks early and went into labour and had to be induced and had an epidural. The doctors and staff were fantastic and they kept me well informed the whole way through the birth. The birth and aftercare in my opinion, is alot better than what you would get in the UK. They are more than happy to take the baby for you if you are not up it. If you need any more info please private mail me.

HMC provides the best medical service in Qatar. The only problem is they are overloaded due to population increase. Al-Ahli hospital is very good if the delivery went fine without any problems. As soon as a problem occurs they have to transfer the child to HMC. This applies to all private hospitals including Al-Emadi, Doha Clinic and American hospital.

Dear Flavia,

I agree with scorpio79, its better you give a visit personally to Hamad Women's Hospital and have a look at there services.

I don't have any info about Al-Ahli Hospital, so I won't comment anything about its services. But, being a staff member of Hamad Medical Corporation, I would say HMC is much well equiped compared to any other hospital in Qatar and have some of the well know consultants in the medical field.

Take care and all the best.

why dont you pay a visit to the Hamad Hospital NICU and see for yourself? You dont have to believe a word that I am saying. Better still, talk to the nurses there.. Seeing is believing afterall..

The NICU in Al-Ahli is incapable of handling any complications, if it occurs during childbirth. And if they cannot resolve it, the parents are told to take the baby to Hamad Hospital..

In the incident that i mentioned, the baby been taken out using forceps and the doctor pressed the baby's head quite hard and a vein ruptured (dont know the actual medical term) in the baby's head. It got clotted and they did not diagnose it till the baby started shivering and then after all the scans, the parents were told to take the baby to Hamad Hospital. And all this while, they had injected the baby with some other medications as well which was not needed. Hamad Hospital could not start the treatment till these unwanted medications were flushed out of the baby's body.. Luckily, the baby is recovering and that is all that matters in the end.

I do not want to disclose the nationality of the doctor or the parents, but if you do care for your baby, go to Hamad Hospital.

I gave birth in Al Ahli hospital on 22 July 2008, 2 months ago!

From my personal experience, Al Ahli Hospital is the best! All doctors are very good, Dr. Najla is a very good doctor also. I have been given the best support during my delivery. All nurses were very helpful and very nice, they were there for me 24 hours, all nurses are experienced with babies and did a great job ... no worries, you are in the right place, they will take good care of you. if you need further details send me a PM.

Her first three were at Hamad Medical and her last child was born in Al Ahli ONLY because she wanted her husband to attend the delivery. she compared all four deliveries and decided never to go back to Al Ahli.

They are rude and broke her water - without her approval. She was emotionally and phsycologically abused by the nurses there. They wouldn't call her doctor when she was asked them to. We had to call her from our personal mobiles.

Not a very pleasant experience.

I'm having all my children at Hamad Medical.

Thanks you all for the responses, althought i must say that i've been quite worry about some comments. Are you people sure about those things (that a ahli don't have NICU)?? Did you actually gave birth on hamad or other hospital to say that or this is like that kind of stuff that you hear somebody saying and reapeat as if was realy truth?? I'm asking because chosing a hospital/doctor far away from your home country is a very dificult decision, and al ahli hospital doesn't look like the kind of place you described. I like to hear from someone who actually delivered there. Is there anyone??

Thanks

Same goes for Doha Clinic. If anything goes wrong, tha ambulance's are rushed to Hamad Medical. Why risk it?

I know a girl that gave birth at Al Ahli and the doctor stiched her up that she later couldn't have sex with her husband. She had to go through a minor surgery to correct the mistake.

please consider another hospital.. they are not experienced and are not capable nor have any facilities to take care of your baby, if there are any complications. I will pm you further details, since i have to leave now. Many serious incidents have occured there over the past weeks and as much as 5-6 babies have had to be rushed to Hamad Hospital because of gross medical negligence on the part of Al Ahli Hospital. I personally know of 1 baby who is still in the NCU of Hamad Hospital now, that had to be transferred from Al-Ahli.

Stay far away from al-Ahli hospital and consider Hamad Hospital.
