Ezdan tragedy inside the Gym

By KellysHeroes

Good morning all.

Was informed that one of the residents got heart attack yesterday while practicing at the treadmill inside the health club. There was nobody there to give first aid as required in such cases. The poor guy passed away.

The martyr of fitness and carelessness.

Regarding this unfortunate incident:

1 - He had previously undergone open heart surgery, and should not have been on the treadmill.

2 - He was fasting (which may have been an accelerator)

3 - A doctor was present from the moment he collapsed

4 - The Life Guards performed, under supervision of the doctor, CPR until the ambulance arrived. The paramedics used the defibrillator for over an hour, unfortunately in vain.

This was a case of sudden death from cardiac arrest.

mmmmm, if one is paying an exorbitant amount for a gym membership, then make sure there is someone trained in CPR there! I'll do it for a 'nominal fee' but don't expect me to wear a polo top....doesn't do with big boobs!!

We all know that gym management does not guarantee the survival of its members and visitors and we are not arguing if its the deceased time or know. At least there is a minimum to be done in this regard. Injuries and accidents are expected in such facilities and the management is obliged to provide first aid till the professional assistance is available.Problem is both things were not availale.

Those who have heart attacks usually do not pass away instantly. They have sufficient time to be rescued then after a while they say bye bye if not handled properly of if their case is very severe..

Again I wonder. Four adjacent towers (sort of hotel appartments) and a swimming pool and a gym and no nursing personnel? I do not find any logic here.

If it's a membership gym, then yes, there should be instuctors and trained staff on hand, but if its at the towers or the compounds, sorry, equipment is used at your own risk, and there are notices saying that....

I visited the gym last week to look into a membership. For almost $2,000 dollars for a single gym membership per year I would expect that they would have someone qualified in basic first aid.

Unfortunately, just like everything else here, there's NO value for money. No wonder when I asked they only had approx. 100 members.

Personally I wouldn't want a supervisor in a compound gym. 9 times out of 10 I'm the only person in the gym and I wouldn't want some dude sitting there staring at me.

The swimming pool at ET is always supervised with lifeguards in my experience...!

Wouldn't make sense to not supervise a gym as they have people there to work out fitness programs & supervise/monitor etc

If they hadn't been, they will be immediately I'd guess..

I'm fairly certain it won't be considered Ezdan Tower's fault. That would be like saying if he had a heart attack in his apartment it would be their fault as well because there wasn't someone on hand to help him.

A gym in an apartment block isn't like a gym you pay money to go to. It's there for the residents' convenience. Sure, it would be great if they had supervisors there, but most don't.

By Gypsy• 7 Sep 2008 15:03

I really don't see how this was the gyms fault. Even if there had been people their he may still have died. Heart attacks happen.

of the deceased. If not ET then I'm still sad.

On the few occasions I've gone into the ET gym to look around thinking about just when I'm going to summon the courage to 'do something' I've never noticed an absence of staff.

I know the Health club manager, so will I'm sure find out more details....., unless he's no longer there....

Respectfully,

@kelly,

What should happen and what happens around the world are two different things.

Gym rooms are basically shared common room facilities.

They are not actual gyms with instructors and so on in most cases.

In the UK, my apartment building clearly said, "Use of the gym is at your own risk."

But yeah, for the price you pay, you expect someone there :P

However in most cases, I never expect anyone to be there.

since rent somehow based on what the ameneties available, the management should consider hiring staff/personnel not only for upkeep and maintenance.

It's a known protocol to have a physician check-up before doing strenous (spellcheck) exercise.

Back in the Philippines when I worked as a GEN.SERVICES/HOUSEKEEPING MANAGER for a condominium tower (similar to BEVERLY HILLS TOWERS et al), we have to provide 2 (alternating) gym trainers during the gym's opened hours (7AM - 12MN). Their salaries are take from association dues which ALL TENANTS pay to the Condominium Management for the upkeep of the facilities (common areas) outside their unit.

What I noticed here in Doha, the condo towers'and compund gyms are well maintained by cleaners but no one there to assist the gym users.

This can also be a WAKE-UP CALL for the management to look into this "concern" since renting a house/villa in a compound is quite expensive

In my opinion only....

(P.S. edited comment...oops)

now it is turning out to be the gym client's mistake that he died.

OK, everyone should see the doctor before exercising. BUT. There should be some sort of nursing/medical infrastructure within the facility.

Besides, the customer should be very aware of everything, specially when it comes to health/life/death

If you check the ad. today in Gulf Times, half a page on the 2nd page. You will think it is a fully equipped gym facility. Fully equipped does not mean only hardware and some decoration.

Azi, you are right, everyone should go to the doctor before engaging in any exercise.

Plus, having a heart rate monitor helps as well.

We all could look healthy as we don't feel anything but sometimes, there might be underlying problems we are not aware of.

The trobule with gyms in compounds and apartment buildings is they are treated like home gyms, so there is no requirement to have a trained professional in attendance at all. Hence the use at your own risk policy.

If the mistake is ours as you indicate, then what is the purpose of a gym?

we could buy the equipment we like and keep it at home. That will be more convenient and less costly.

that is why before even thinking about doing regular visits to the gym, it is important to have our body assessed, healthwise, for us to know our limits/capacity based on our ages..

By britexpat• 7 Sep 2008 11:16
britexpat

Tragedies like these occur regularly. We have to be aware of our own limits..

How old was this guy ?, was he overweight etc, was he fasting??

Having said all that, I would expect somewhere like Ezdan to have an attendent on duty during all the hours the gym is open..

By mjamille28• 7 Sep 2008 11:14
mjamille28

i know... and it's sad that they wont do something about it.. it's because of these people that patronize their services that their business is thriving so well and they cant even return the favor by at least having qualified trainers/staff to watch over them.. :(

Not sure what the law is (here or in the UK) but gyms in compounds and residential blocks often don't have a member of staff present. They usually just say that patrons use the equipment at their own risk.

there should always be a trained professional to guide people who work out in gyms, as well as medical personnel to give immediate aid for instances like these..it's like being in a pool or beach, where there should always be lifeguards on duty...

Even ma doctor doesnt knwo wht triggerd it. I never had BP . no heriditory too.Had my routine checks in april 2007 and everything was normal.
