What's culture & what's religion in arabs?

thexonic
By thexonic

From all the thing's I've seen and heard about this region, the region that claims to be highly islamic and very strict about following islam. The question is are they really following the islam or is it the culture? things like eating reptiles, dog fights, hunting, wasting money on unnecessary things, under paying their workers, giving and asking for ridiculous amount of dowry, marrying more than 1 wife even if they cant satisfy the first one, marrying is only permissible among the Gulf arabs, the guy cannot marry a woman older than him ... There are alot of other things, but all these things come under islam? I dont think its Islamic to do any of these things... so what is going on???

More over, relating to Ramadan, why is it that Ramadan is treated as more of a special month when its just as special as any other month. It's like saying oh u can drink and do any sin u want throughout the year but not in december, cuz it has christmas... I don't get this idealogy, what is up with that?

Islam unfortunately is not muslims

If you want to know islam do not look at what muslims do (the majority of them at least)

this is a sad fact but its true

Dear thexonic

There are some traditions that took an Islamic character to it, and there are many people who in the name of Islam do so many bad things to the religion and that what catches the eye of the western world and make them focus on it and don’t see the great things about it.

Not all kinds of reptiles are eatable unless the human is in a state of starvation and there isn’t anything but reptiles to eat. Hunting to eat yes, but hunting for the sake of hunting, I don’t believe so (I have to double check)

Dog fights aren’t part of the religion and so is underpaying or not paying the workers, wasting money on unnecessary things.

Marriage shouldn’t be specific to a nationality or race; unfortunately this took a political turn. And to marry more than 1, there are rules and regulations into it (inform me if you need to know them). And who said a guy cannot marry a woman older than him? The prophet married a woman almost double his age and I know so many who did.

Although doing good deeds and avoiding sins should be all year round, but Ramadan has its own characteristics. One of its days had the privilege to be the day the Qur’an started to come to earth from Allah. In Ramadan, we must fast, unlike the other 11 months. There are so many things about Ramadan that makes it special to us. For more information you can visit Islam on line website: http://www.islamonline.net/english/index.shtml

U will never get it, cuz u r a noob. Hence I dont see any reson to respond to u. Plus the thread doesn't imply to u either. Talking of common sense, if u found my thread stupid and u think u have enough common sense, then u r most welcome to get your cranky azs out of here.

Thank you for your stupid respond. Appreciate it

Sadiq, get your religions right...its catholics that go to confession and mass not christians...we just sin and we don't give a toss!

Right thexonic! I've got several friends who are Christians married to locals and know many many more locals who are married to someone they are NOT related to.

I think the thinking behind marrying someone of the same family is that they are somewhat of a known commodity and also to increase the tribe and strengthen it.

Don't worry, my friend, you cannot possibly offend me :) Can I slap you on the head now please?

Diamond, this thread is not related to u, u r one of the precious ones like Amnesia and the Emir of this country. This is limited to the people who take traditions and make them as religion. All I am saying is that if a country is exposed as a strictly islamic country, such things should not happen. Islam is pretty open minded and there are alot of traditions in arab worlds that are not a part of Islam but are still considered as religion. I wasn't trying to provoke anyone, just talking some things that I've seen and came across and it only implies to those who do it. Take "marrying in gulf" part, Islam has given permission for a muslim to marry a christian or a jew, but over here I've even heard of cases such as the kids should only marry in the same family name... why is that?, its not like if they wont marry in the same family name or the same region they will go to hell, right?

I definitely didn't say or imply that hunting is illegal in Muslim states. It's obvious that Xonic has some preconceptions as to how people in this 'region' live.

A little research and common sense would have solved this question for him; instead of coming on QL and making a fool out of himself with his ridiculous comments.

As for the Ramadan thing, i'm not even going to bother going into a subject where someone asks why a religious event is important to someone who follows that religion.

I only wish the same could be said for my lovely friend thexonic. He needs a slap on the head every now and then lol.

I support the idea of fasting, but then it should be done properly, not just during the day, and then all hell breaks loose at night.

If we as Christians fast we do have some special times to do this, but if we want to pray for something special at any other time, like praying for a miracle, we fast to show God that we really mean what we say, then we cut out whatever it is that would be "special to us" might be chocolate, or ciggies, or whatever for a period of time, but yes, to put one special month aside to do good things, then don't give a damn for the rest of the year, doesn't make any sense.

And, Diamond, I engaged my brain before typing this.... Don't be so defensive, there are not many of you around, unfortunately, if there was, Qatar Living would be full of happy and cheerful posts, not downright depressing ones.....

Just because we treat Ramadan as a special and different month (it is...do you fast any other time for the entire month?) it doesn't mean that we don;t try as hard to be good people all through the rest of the year.

Is that what you do thexonic?

P.S. I don't eat reptiles (am a veggie), watch dog fights or hunt reptiles. I like to think I don't waste my money. My employees are well paid.

Please engage brain before putting typing fingers into action :)

Find me any Muslim country that celebrates Ramadan and I will show you their local customs that contradict many Islamic rules.

And how exactly is hunting against Islam?

I bet if you came to Doha and asked 100 people if they ate reptiles, fought dogs, hunted and married more than one wife, you would get 100 slaps.

I don't get your ideology: Why is it that just because Qatar is a Muslim country located in an Islamic region that you automatically assume everyone here is crazy and shoots dogs.

You're a carrot. Christmas is not like any other day, and Ramadan is not like any other month. It has a special meaning and purpose behind it (kinda the way xmas has one, so does Hanukkah, so does every other religious event on this planet).

There are probably millions of resources online that can teach you about Ramadan in one sentence. Do it. Search it. Google Ramadan. Simple.
