Are Qatar air really strict on the 20 KG allowance?

I'm moving to Qatar next week, and I was wondering how strict Qatar airways are with their 20kg allowance? I think I might be 1 to 2 kilos overweight, will they charge me for that?

Also, if anyone knows, does your hand luggage get weighed too? They say you can take 7 kg there. I'm hoping to squeeze in some more!

Any comments welcome!

Thanks in advance!

I flew from Dubai to Doha last November with my wife and both of our cases were almost 30kg each and I was charged nothing extra.

ANd tell me the most intriguing query.. Why on earth would you ever move to Qatar now????? Traffic jams, overcrowding, glut, gridlock and who needs pickpockets when your landlord and every other place you spend money will gladly take 5 times whatever your paying for the same things now. Its expensive chap. Hope you have a BIG FAT WALLET WITH DEEP POCKETS ! GOOD LUCK YOU WILL NEED IT !

QA has beancounters specifically assigned to calculate how much they rape and fleece their customers who are stupid enough to show up at the airport without weighing their bags.

The agents are specifically trained to extort as much money from you if you are overweight. I have personally seen agents want to charge people for being 2 kilos over.

Take a acceptable size carry on and stuff that as you like. Never seen any carrier weigh that but keep it out of sight as best as possible.

QA allowances are at best skimpy. Apply for the Priviledge Club and you will get more. What erks me the most about QA is the EXTORTIONATE fees they charge for every kilo over. ANd they are extortionate. There should be a law against it.

I personally took another airline this summer to avoid QA agents at Heathrow. Get this - every kilo overweight they demand 22 BRITISH POUNDS, YES POUNDS FOR EVERY F&*^ING KILO! Tell Al Baker to pay that then I will.

Im sorry but fees like that are just scamming and taking advantage of people. "YOUR 5 STAR AIRLINE" MY ARSE and "OVERWEIGHT BY A KILO? POOR POOR CHAP. BEND OVER AND WE WILL DO OUR BEST NOT TO HURT YOUR BUM" THEIVES.

the whole world is strict on weight allowances these days due to the high rise in fuel prices all over the world.

Good one about the jacket. I always do that as well. I also always have one carry on and a smaller bag which i use for a book and my passport and i make sure i stuff it with other things as well. They weigh your carry on but the other one they always forget. I always say my little suitcase is annoying to open 50 times for my reading book and passport and things so i keep it seperate. It's not much but i'm sure if you weigh it it will come up to 2 or 3 kgs. And when moving.... every kilo counts.

I was once asked to put my carry on on the scales at Doha - it weighed in at 15Kg! I removed my laptop (a big bugger) and was OK. You ARE allowed your 1 carry on (7kg) PLUS a laptop or camera bag - it's amazing what you can cram in those!

Also, if you are bringing a coat, wear it or carry it - you'll get away with that too (pack the pockets!)

They can let go of 2-4 Kgs easily but more than this will cost you.

It really depends on where you are flying from and who is at the check in desk. I've noticed they the sometimes do make you put your handluggage on the belt to see the weight as well but often they don't. I feel you are more likely to get away with heavies handluggage if you don't have too much over 20kgs in your check in luggage. And not to offend anyone or to imply they aren't treating everyone the same way but i do have the feeling they are sometimes a bit more flexible with certain people.

No real advice for you sorry. Just make sure you are prepared to pay for your extra kgs and if you are lucky you won't have to pay anything. 1 or 2 extra will go through i would guess. More than that... you'll end up paying.I've flown Emirates a lot and they've let me go through with 5 kgs too much but they made me pay when i only has 2 kgs too much. The 2 kgs was flying from Birmingham, 5 kgs from Dusseldorf. It's always a gamble I'm afraid.

Good luck!!!

You'll probably get away with 21kg, but less likely with 22kg. And they quite often weigh the hand luggage. Note also that the dimensions for hand luggage on QA is smaller than on some other airlines (BA for example).
