I am possibly relocating to Qatar. I am single, 40 and no kids. I am trying to communicate with other Westerners (Americans) to get a perspective on things and determine wether this would be a worthwhile opportunity to persue.

Hello everyone,

Thank you all for your responses.

Special thanks to Remonskya, Mindcrime, Haunted, Voyageress and Thejam for your appropriate responses.

FYI: I have lived overseas and traveled outside the U.S. quite extensively. I have dated women from many cultures and have been married to two foreign nationals in my life. My circle of friends I associate with are from every corner of the world. And I have many friends from the Middle Eastern regions as well: Saudi, Pakistan, Iran, etc... Race means nothing to me. It's all about the person.

Alexa, your response is nothing but disappointing.

Your tone and attitude was uncalled for.

First of all there is nothing wrong with asking questions from a specific nationality, especially your own when seeking advice of this nature.

Who says it is not particulary polite? You? You are intititled to your own personal opinion and I respect that. But maybe you are the one being a little overly sensitive to a simple question. Don't sweat the small stuff my friend because at 66 life is too short to do so.

I am not going to ask a person that has never resided in the U.S. to compare the life between Qatar and the U.S.

As well, Americans are made up of every culture in the world, so it's all transparent to me.

Secondly, if I sent you a personal message without saying "Hello" then I apologize. Sorry but I don't think it was intentionally done to violate your decorum.

If you are referring to the question I posted publicly, then I would have to say there are alot of people who are not being polite as well.

I have received an offer letter to relocate to Qatar and at this stage will look to those of you who have valuable input in helping me shape my perception of what life might be like there.

Good luck and thanks again for your valuable insight.

Sincerely,

Avetta

Hi I too am a westerner, a brit not American. So may be my advice will not help , however just like to say that i work with an American national, who earns a lot here I mean much more than me, actually he is my boss.yet he never ceases to winge and complain that he never earns much and always compalins on how he has to pay so much for the rent of his place back in the US and so on. However he has it all made here. Anyway, some people will never be satisfied no matter how much they earn, so you may end up getting advice from some one like him who is always putting down the arabs and complain on how low he gets paid.Yet he earns alot and gets a massive house and other allowances. So take care on who advises you and how objective they are and do your homework

Good point, Haunted. Some of us have been lucky to have experienced living in many different continents but for those who haven't travelled much there could be severe culture shock upon arrival, which is why Avetta posed the question to fellow countrymen. No harm in that really...

Hey did you look at the newest question:

Need help from UK citizens or residents!

Should I be offended? ;)

Truly. Say you've never gone abroad you wouldn't realize what an international community Doha is. I mean I've answered many posts and tried to join in with this forum and have gotten little to no response. sniff sniff

I'm not offended sniff. Just let them know that you would be glad to assist too. (But don't forget we get paid in that crappy dollar currency that is half the value of the pound. (Ack!)

Avetta,

I'm an American from Arabic origin; I recently got a Job offer From Qatar gas and did take it. I did do my home work regarding salaries and benefits so I might be able to help you on what is reasonable and what is not, the only thing that differ for American is that you actually have to pay taxes to the US, thought salaries here are tax free.

A general rule, if you are offered what you are making right now in the US with housing and other benefits to the side, you should be fine.

Regards

I
