Well, the day has finally arrived, after just over 1 year here I finally got my drivers licence and today I am picking up my car!!!
Now, all you drivers out there, how nervous were you the first time you hit the roads here??
Whats the things (apart from the obvious) to watch out for the most??
DaRude, can I have a car sticker????? lol

Congrats...

I guess the only thing for you to do is be alert on the roads...

Follow all basic norms of driving like..keeping ur lane, maintaining speed limits, keeping distance, indicators, mirrors...the entire drill...

Keep a watch on ur mirror..and if u see a fast approaching landcruiser...just get outta the lane..u don't want the bumpers to kiss...

also..patience is a virtue..lots of under-confident drivers around...its just courteous to be patient with them..just like how its done in the UK...no rage..only patience...

There u go mate..thats ur crash course..

To echo comments made by others, the driving standard is pretty shocking here as you already know from the passenger seat!

I always drive defensively yet aggresively, leaving no driver uncertain as to WHAT I'm doing or WHERE I'm going & I treat all other drivers as tho they havn't a clue in the world, have just landed from Mars & are trying to operate unfamiliar machinery AND find their way - it's easier looking down from above you see....;-)

Check that your horn works & if in doubt as to the other idiots intentions, honk, you'll be surprised how often they appear to 'jump' as they were oblivious to all around them!!

Hey hun, you'll be fine, oh & keep the hand gesticulations to a minimum, but you already know that I'm sure!!

KSA GM buddy,

Just a small doubt ? How can a blind person drive on roads and how the hell he got the driving license ?? LOL

I would after seconding what the others have said, would only like to add pretty much that always believe and follow the Golden Rule..."You are the only person who can see on the road, everyone else (including your loved ones) are all blind..."

follow the meaning behind this rule and vollaaa...you can save your azz a lot while driving here in Qatar...

And now good morning to all my dear friends, lovely ladies and good men...!!!

you need to put on your psychic underpants and have 360 degree vision.... and think for you and all the loonies...

i wont even drive a little bit tired.... you have to be on full alert!

Also I find I shock myself with the profanities I use whilst driving!

By brandylady• 13 Aug 2008 07:40

that seems the ideal approach to drivin here :)

what mug???? lol

By Fatcat• 13 Aug 2008 07:38

brandylady, assume everyone around you is an idiot and does not know how to drive and you'll be fine. Don't expect them to indicate or to have common sense in turning left or right or coming in to a main road. So keep your distance and don't drive too closely.

Darude, you do know what'll happen to you if she gets a sticker before I get my mug, right?

thank you, make up on, hair done, so will use the mirrors for the correct use :)

Indicators are second nature to me as we DO use them in the UK, and turn in the direction we are indicating, not the opposite as seen here many times lol ;)

GM Brandy.....

first of all dont be scared while driving... Use Ur seatbelts all time, stay in proper lane, use signals as n when required ( Which really doesn't matter ..LOL ), last and the most important:

" DONT DO YOUR MAKEUP STUFF, ADJUSTING LIPSTICKS, MASCARRAS ETC. WHILE DRIVING "....LoL

Drive Safely... Cheerz !!!

By brandylady• 13 Aug 2008 07:16
brandylady

good advice and will certainly remember it :)

makes me cringe how close other drivers are to the car in front!!

By smoke• 13 Aug 2008 07:03

When i got my license, my dad used to drop me to work in his car but he would let me drive it FOR TWO YEARS lol...since i have very freaking early work timings the roads used to be nice and clear no much traffic, slowly i picked up the confidence to drive in QATAR, but nothing can prepare u for the way others drive around here, so please my advice to u habibi is it doesnt matter how good u think u are in driving, stay in the proper lane, maintain the speed limit, always always watch ur mirrors, keep safe distance, to hell with whoever honks from behind or flashes u with their lights.

Good Fortune always comes knocking at your door...when you are sh*tting in the toilet!! :)
