As petrol cost is not as relavent here as most countries, I'd go for the biggest car you can afford, and I wouldn't buy new as you loose to much in the first year - take a look at what is available in the class ads here.

I am using Honda Accord -2008 (Full Option) and believe me its performance is mindblowing.
If you have to drive within the city than don't go for 4x4.
Honda has nice resell value and they are good in service. (Toyota owners are having complains regarding service)
