Fresh fish and shrimps in SHOP RITE near the airport is great when cook the same day you buy. They clean the fish and shrimps if you want. We were never let down and always end up with fab seafood night at home with friends.

Just heard that there is a Golden Fish restaurant along al-saad that sells a good seafood platter. Heard it is reasonably priced and good. Try it, I will too. Don't mistake it with Best Fish Restaurant - also along the same road. Their fish and chips is alright and the strawberry juice is thick, cold and fresh.

Saw a restaurant in Al Sharq resort where you pick your fresh seafood displayed and then tell them to cook it the way you want it or let the chef decide. You can try that too. Should be pricey but could be worth it.

Used to buy fish and crabs from Corniche. They are really fresh. Choose the fishes with clear eyes and fresh red gills. Pick medium size ones too else meat is stiff after cooking. Price now is not as cheap compared to Fish Wholesale market (next to whole vege market). Remember to bargain. I usually hang around and see what price they offer others. Else, they may quote you a high price based on how you dressed that day. Don't go late too else fish gets sunned too much and its difficult to see what they have cos they put them back into the foam boxes. Difficult to choose too.

I do dread going to the Fish Market cos you really smell fishy all over after you go inside. Especially so when you bring your fish to the section where they clean and cut your fish (Qr2 per kg). There's one stall I know that does cleaning and cutting, so you can avoid waiting and going to the cleaning section. I still go because there are so many stalls (about 60-70 I think) and so much variety. Sherri, King Fish and Hamour are the favourites here. You should see the huge ones and boxes of seafood that people buy. The usually dead crabs sold here cannot beat the fresh live ones sold at Corniche.

Agree with everyone that nothing beats cooking the fish that you catch off the corniche or on a dhow. I usually deep fry or bbq the ones I caught.

I just went by what the packaging calls it. I had wondered what it was REALLY called.

I should have realised the shop assistants and hotel worker here spell what they hear phonetically. My husband's name, Bryan, was spelled "Brayann" on a membership card recently. Must be the way I tell 'em. :D

Thanks for the info re the Sharri trifle.

But can anyone tell me what type of fish it is, or the equivalent of what fish I may know from UK. I mean, is it part of the Cod family, or the Haddock?

I only ask because, although I cook it just plainly with lemon juice and pepper, I'd like to find an interesting recipe for it but when I google 'sherry fish' all I get is recipes for fish cooked IN sherry LOL

Basically, I'm just curious if it has another name which I would recognise.

santosh- hammour is good so is sherry and the red snapper, if ya not familiar with the fish then go to any of the supermarkets and have a look at them (they are labelled) then make yr choice next time you go to the cornish.

greg- the fresher the fish the firmer it is and also the scales are more difficult to remove (this is what if found thru experience), so with a little bit of practice and a very very sharp knife ya can get the job done- good luck. oh btw if ya think that is tough try having to clean and cut up live crabs........lol

Thanks for the info but since I don't know how to clean a fish, i'll probably stick with carefour or family Food Centre.

i get the freshest fish and crabs along the corniche when the fishermen come in once in the morning and once in the evening. yr best bet is in the morning now that the weather is warmer. more often than not the fish is still alive and the crabs too- will going there earlier in the week again......

We shared a seafood platter at the restaurant at the top of the Sheraton and it was wonderful, plus a great view of the water. Just had seafood at the Intercon and it was terrible. Maybe just bad choices or a bad night.
