An Indian businessman in Dubai was killed last month in a robbery in which he was run over, had tens of thousands of dollars stolen and left for dead on the side of the road, police revealed on Tuesday.

Police said Shameer Musa Cuba Otayel, an Indian fuel trader, was followed by two men after leaving a branch of Dubai Islamic Bank in Ras Al Khor after getting 329,000 dirhams ($89,600) out to invest in real estate.

The two men tailed Otayel in their car and after following him for around two kilometres they rammed the car, police told UAE daily the National.

Otayel may have gotten out of his car thinking he had been in an accident, then while one of the assailants distracted the victim the other ran him over, Police speculate.

Police describe to the newspaper how the investigation unfolded and the huge amount of forensic work that was done to uncover clues because of the lack of eyewitnesses.

Police also highlight coordination between UAE emirate police forces in tracking down the men responsible.

Both men have now been apprehended and the case has been handed over to the public prosecution, police said.
