White man guilty of racial abuse after calling white guards 'honkies'

A white man has admitted of racially abusing three white security guards by calling them "honkies".
Jonathan Wicks admitted using abusive or insulting words which were racially aggravated, after calling the security men "honky wannabe cops."

Wicks said that he found the whole incident at a Reading shopping centre "a bit of a laugh" - but was nevertheless charged.

Martin Bryan, defending at Reading Magistrates' Court, said that 20-year-old Wicks was being cheeky rather than abusive.

"He is white British. The victims were white British as well. That might make his abuse slightly less offensive on this basis," he said.

"He seemed to perceive it as a bit of a laugh and a little bit silly. He was not intending to be malicious. He was being more obnoxious."

Wicks also admitted attempting to steal a bicycle.

He will be sentenced at a later date and was released on bail.
