Relocating to Doha

Hi All,

Im a Singaporean and have been offered a job in Doha. The salary package is not fantastic, as the cost of accommodation is rather high. Plus, I will be moving over all alone if I accept the offer.

Can I know if it is safe for a girl to move to Doha and stay on her own?

Any advice for people like me?

Thanks!

Doha's ok lah.

I just moved from Singers to Doha. Yeah it's different but isn't every country.

Look after "no. 1" though, if the pacakage ain't that great then ask for more money. Rents are comparable to Singapore.

If this isn't Substantially more than you are making in Singapore, don't come. Because your social life and general well being will take a Huge hit.

If you're at all attractive, you'll get harrassed constantly when out. If my girlfriend parks her car a block away and walks to my place she often gets harrassed. There's been a few cases where Landcruisers will pull up to her, or even block her path and offer her a ride or try to talk to her.

Yep, i go to the malls alone and apart from the staring, which you learn to ignore, you will be ok.

Dress down is my opinion, nothing too revealing, save that for home.

Watch out for people on here who will give you the best advice, some who will help with the amount you will need to live oh and the ones who are waiting for you to meet them,(K, :) you know who I mean lol xx)

no worries, everyone is friendly and helpfull x

It is safe here...but it is very expensive.

Doha is indeed safe but... you'll get stared A LOT, no matter what you wear.

If you decide to wear a dress (not revealing!), it is likely that you'll feel uncomfortable if you go to the mall alone. I feel that men here are very sexually starved (not only the locals, by the way), and look at you as if you're a piece of meat.

Having said that, this is a nice country. But do consider negotiating your package so you can at least buy/rent a car here, rent a flat and have spare money to go out. Being a single girl you won't want to stay home all the time!

How did I miss this Single Girl moving to Doha...Thread...LOL...

Anyways, dont know bout what benefits you are standing on, but all I can tell ya, is from what I hear, this place is alright, I mean come on, you cant expect any place to be like Heaven...but ya this is just about alright, so with respect to safe or not safe...i would say safe...

Other than that, whether it is a correct decision or not, either you need to share your package or if you dont want that, go through the forum search option and see how things work out and then make a decision girl...

so yea, and now after that, so single eyyy, interesting...LOL...(ok its not like this out on the streets...dont worry...LOL)

r u sure you want to relocating to Doha? knowing you coming from Singapore ... you will defenitely will experience some 'cultural shock'.

Bear in mind you wont be getting any CPF contribution from your employer ... or medisave. Public transportation here is sucks ... especially compare to Singapore.

The good things about Doha, if you do drive here ... petrol cost cheaper than water. No ERP or parking charges.

@Amnesia ... i am listening to the CD as i type this. Thank you very much !!!

One of the safest countries in the world. Even after a bit of crime rise.

Doha is safe in my opinion, as long as you are not stupid (walk down a dark alley dressed like a hooker etc).

Think long and hard about coming here if your salary package is not great.  Accomodations are expensive,  taxis are hard to get and unreliable,  food is going up,   it is costing more and more to live here.   Petrol is cheap though!

Hi Raiflyer,

I dont think you will have any problems here, i have now been here for over 1 year, and have yet to see any sort of crime, plus the people here are soooo soo friendly, i can honestly say its the safest place i have been, and i really enjoy it here, go for it!!

Doha is reasonable safe, though people seem to exaggerate just how safe it is and become complacent as a result, but as long as you keep your wits about you you'll be fine.

A bigger problem for you is your salary package. If it is not brilliant you may find you're not making as much money as you'd expect here, because as you said accommodation is expensive.

I have found Doha to be very safe, many others have commented that it is safer here than any where else.  The level of crime is very low and often accommodation has security officers present (though there appears to be little reason given the crime levels).  From my understanding security was set up due to a bomb going off three years ago.

I am here with my infant child and I feel perfectly safe here...
