our house was robbed!!!

lav_leee
By lav_leee

at least four villas in our small compound were robbed early this morning... & that includes our own house. the robber took the money inside my bag (which i left outside our bedroom in the second floor where we're sleeping!) but didn't take other important things like our jewelries, tv, computer, etc. i was shaken because sometimes i will sleep in the living room or use the computer till 4 am. what if i was awake or i left the bedroom door open last night? what if my husband attended his friends' party yesterday? i couldn't imagine what else could have happened to me & my 3 year old daughter.

thank God for saving us.

God forgives but sometime, guards manage to do it coz they are less suspected...

Hmm .. Gota be careful mates. Security guards out here are useless. My appartment has three blocks and each has one guard . The G4S , sit together in one block and chat to glory. Idiots, none cares even after many complaints

well... whenever i have a new driver, they will always look at their ID & list them in their logbook. they can never enter d compound without me. maybe ur friend put ur name on d list of d people who can visit him.

re: hmc, maybe they r linient bcoz they know that people who r going there r sick.

HMC??? i work at HMC.. the only thing most of the security gurads do all the time is sit around, chat and have coffee and tea....

Actually the Starbucks over there was robbed one night and no-one found out until they came to open up the next morning.....

HAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAH

Hi, There is gud security cover for the HMc hospitals and buildings in the campus as mentioned ,.....so do some of the quarters provided to the staff, The outside quarters security is iffy..... depends on the individual compound /..so i guess one will be wise to take the usual precautions.....

By aaahmed81• 7 May 2008 03:43

Security??  i have a friend who lives in a compound and whenever i go pick him up i just honk the horn and the security lets me in... he doesn't know me and he's never asked who i am or where i'm going... sometimes its at 2or 3 am.... thats security.....

Alot of houses are being robbed these past few months, and nothing really gets done about it, and rarely do the theives get caught....

so i guess its just gotta be doors and windows locked tight......

(maybe even a rottweiler?????????)

HMC means hamad medical corp. it's d biggest hospital here in qatar. they have at least 10 security guards every shift &  a patrol car (with policeman of course) standing by d front gate. they also have cameras around. if u r an outsider,  u need to present an ID if u want to enter the premises but u need to tell d security men d name of d tenant whom u want to visit. they have nice environment, with trees, pool, clubhouse, etc. not all compounds in qatar have trees u know. u'll feel safe there.

By JAVI• 6 May 2008 05:40

Are the compounds guarded by armed security?  Do they only let authorized people in the compound?  What is HMC anyway, not familiar, or is it AMC (Army Materiel Command for APS-5) cause I will be staying in that compound once I arrive--but not photos or anything of the place anywhere.

Thank you for the info, just curious about the security of the place.

my bother-in-law & his family live in al messilah compound. they have been there for 7 years now. the security in tight, the maintenance is good. it maybe one of the oldest compounds here in qatar but they are really good. most HMC senior consultants are living there.

my feelings exactly, lavlee. they arent to blame directly but we should be careful.

just try to forget and move on. hopefully the new security measures will help prevent future breakins.

if d thieves are construction workers/laborers, i really don't want to blame them. i may sound crazy but it's true. i mean, let's face it. they are earning 500 riyals a month. they don't have health card/insurance, they don't even have decent accomodation to sleep at night. they are working 10 hours a day. i feel sorry for them.

By lav_leee• 5 May 2008 09:55

d manager of the compound came last night. he gave us a letter that they will provide 2 security men at night. they will also make the walls higher, put grills on the windows downstairs & put cameras on the four corners of the compound.

i am still traumatized though. i got terrible headache since it happened & i vomitted yesterday. i dont have appetite & i didn't go to work for 2 days.

a  length of wood from the inside on a sliding door or window is a must for every house it will not allow the window or door to be opened from the outside

By Eve• 4 May 2008 20:33

I think motion detectors are available in Qatar so if you are alone in the house and want  to hear if someone comes in that might help. Many of us use those poles in the sliding doors to keep them from being pried open. I too believe its usually the security guards as they know your schedule. My friend was robbed twice 10 years ago in the Midmac compound until she got a dog and it never happened again!!  They are afraid of dogs.

dohasteve , i would still prefer a compound to an independent villa.

By lamea• 4 May 2008 14:29

lav lee u r right, it could have been one of the construction workers. a similar thing happened to one of my neighbours whose money was taken while he was sleeping upstairs.the thief got in thru the kitchen window and just took the money , nothing else. the next day they ordered grills for all the downstairs windows.

we also had two villas under  construction right next to our compound so it was probably one of the workers. frankly with the prices soaring at this rate i dont blame them.

By DohaSteve• 4 May 2008 14:26
DohaSteve

I don't live in a compound anymore, but when I did, the security was a joke. Lovely guys, but they spend their time washing cars overnight to make extra money. What are they earning - 800 a month? I'm pretty sure they won't risk injury by trying to apprehend anyone. Anyone in Doha ever seen a beefy security guard? Most of them are so skinny a strong gust of wind will knock them over.

Final suggestion (and this comes from 20 years experience of living all over the world) : if there is so much security in your compound and the villas still got robbed, the first people I would check out are the security guards themselves.

lav_leee, sorry to hear of your robbery,

I am now nervous, I live in a very small compound of 4 villas, only 2 of them are occupied and I am often the only person here all day alone.

Must admit we do have a very high wall and remote gates but I do tend to trust people, I often have the patio doors or the front door unlocked,

NOT ANY MORE!!!!

If you spend all your time judging people, you will have no time to love them.

By anonymous• 4 May 2008 14:16

Did not mean it is one of your neighbours, but it certainly sounds like they know the comings and goings of the neighbourhood. Perhaps they came to the compound to do some labour work gardening etc. and took notice of open doors and windows etc. It is easy if we are all not paying particular attention to things.

As mentioned in the Gulf Times today, people don't guard thier posessions enough and are often distracted by other things, so keep your hand on your bag and take with you when you go to bed. I always do it.

one of my neighbors has two dogs & d thieves still got her purse & money.

al mesilla compound is an old but still nice compound with tight security. they have at least 10 security guards every shift.

i don't think one of my neighbors did it coz they've been robbed too! there are only 10 villas in our compound, 3 are still vacant & 4 villas were robbed.

there's only one housemaid in d compound but she will never do it. & im sure she is so tired taking care of two small children who sleeps with her at night (2 years old & 3 months old baby).

our guess is that maybe, some laborers who used to work here or the one working beside the compound (construction)

im not really sure abt the security guard on duty that night. i mean, he knows taht one of d villas is empty but d thieves still went inside & d guard knows that one of d villas has dogs but they still wnt in too.

im still afraid to go downstairs alone at night. i couldn't imagine that some strangers came in & roam around our house. my husband doesn't want to talk abt it coz he said that he's so scared of what could have happened if he left me & our daughter that night to attend a party.

They are still not professional because they left something to trace them... fingerprints and the security guards must be interrogated (conspiracy maybe?).

you are lucky that no body hurt in all this

using my detective instincts I think the one who robbed you must be from inside the campound,

someone who knows how to get in and out of the villas

may be the genators who clean the campound or one of the neighbours maids or may be even one of the neighbours family members.

anyway thank god that your family are safe and lock your doors well before sleeping

those people do everything but security:

they assume that intruders walk/drive through the main gate only

usually they sleep or watch tv or play solitaire (if they have computers) or flirt with one of the maids

wtf are the 'security' men doing....if there is a robbery on a compound they should be sacked!!

By Eve• 3 May 2008 22:06
Eve

A relative had her house robbed years ago, laptops taken, satelite boxes, many things when the family was all asleep upstairs, it also seemed through a window. With the inflation going nuts here I suspect their will be more robberies in the past it was mainly young boys searching for liquor but given the economy that has changed. The police usually fingerprint and they catch thieves that way. Don't take a taxi when travelling as they also know your house is empty. Good luck

By lamea• 3 May 2008 21:19

the crime rate is definitely rising and it wouldnt hurt to be more careful. there should be grills on the windows and if not do what i have done, place wooden sticks or iron rods on the sliding path of the windows to prevent people from sliding them open. doors should be properly locked and an alarm system would be even better.

By treysdad• 3 May 2008 11:57

This has been happening to compound dwellers recently...

Maybe these robbers think those living in compounds are complacent in their "secure" gated, high-walled community that they leave doors and windows open.

Be careful everyone... hard times sometimes brings out the worse in people.

thank goodness that you and your family are safe but this is really alarming...we used to leave the house unlock though we have security in the compound but this is not wise any longer.  What is happening to Doha lately???  It's been occupied by thieves.  Yesterday an incident happened in front of Carrefour (City Center), a friend of my cousin who works there had her bag stolen.  Her 1 month salary and 2 mobile phones were in that stolen bag.

charan come on ...her house was robbed...

So imagine he took even the QR50.

There are a set of robbers in Mumbai called mathar pharadis of whom even the police are afraid to chase. These guys come only in their underwear with their body fully oiled. Atleast 15 of them come to rob a single house.

They guard the entrance and exit well throughout the roberry.

If they break into the house one  person each stands near the head of the sleeping person with a heavy stick if the guy wakes up his head is bludgned with only one stroke and no chance for him to shout.

To break in they just push a long iron  rod with a thin end through the door gap near the lock and use it like a lever to pull

open the door the screws just come out quite easily (even if you have a

7 lever night-latch) with hardly any sound because the door is wood.

After the robbery they run like you have never seen anybody run, and

they carry a sling shot and they have a very good aim. So if anybod dares to

chase them gets rock on their forehead.

That was quite daring.......how did he get in? Through the door or window?

Did he break the lock or open it with a duplicate key?

If you have a laptop/pc its always  good to use the web-cam as a security device. There are some software that starts taking pictures or video the moment it detects motion in the room.

The free version of which is here:

http://www.yawcam.com/download.php

You can also set it to raise an alarm which might panic the burgler. You can set it to send images directly to a email id so even if he dismantles your webcam the images are already sent to your email.
