Also, regarding pets and housing, remember that if you live outside of Doha, Dukhan, Al Khor, Messaid, then housing is part of your package rent free and pets are not a problem. I brought my big dog from the UK and am so glad we chose to live outside of Doha, we have a big house and quiet beaches within 5 minutes drive to run on.

At the clinic, we have had many people come in a panic having to board their dogs because a neighbour has called the Police because the dog was barking or simply because they had found out they had a dog and don't like dogs. With cats, it's easier but it is best to get the agreement of the landlord but I didn't come across any problems if the cats are indoors and quiet. People here sometimes think that a cat in a nearby apartment may pose a health risk or, due to ignorance, that their children may become allergic. If the cats are declawed, please make sure that if you have a maid or houseboy that they remember to keep the doors closed, it's so sad when they escape and can't fend for themselves. Poppy can help you with the relocation and advise you on every aspect of care here and I do recommend that you use a company such as QPR to help you clear customs on arrival, it is very definitely worth it!

Hi Poppy,

Sorry we do not have your pm, but we would like to know if there are any apartments or villas that would accept two mature, declawed, indoor cats. We just cannot give them up prior to moving to Qatar in July. Can you help us please?

Hi Fatcat,

We are also looking for accommodation that would accept two indoor, mature cats. We are not in Qatar as of yet, and I keep hearing that the rents there are quite high. Is this true? Any idea of a range for rents?

Hi Poppy

I was interested in your posting. I am looking for pet friendly apartments or an older villa to rent where I can have a dog - do you know of any?

Thanks

Alumnar, there are a lot of places who allow you to have pets. Once you get here, get the newspaper and start calling agents. Tell them your requirements and it's likely that you will find something that suits your needs.

Hello Poppy,

we arrive in Qatar tomorrow and from all we have read on Qatar Living Forums I am really dreading to get to Qatar. We have a 5 year old daughter who we promised she would be allowed to have 2 pets, adopted by us in Qatar. Would you please be so kind and help us finding accomodation suitable for us AND Pets? We have work colleagues who live in the Ruby Compound (Beside Manai Compound in Abu Hamour), any chance of anything in the Compound or Area? We would like to have facilities such as swimming pool and outside area, 2 bedroom minimum... well maybe more details should be discussed over PM?

Thanks for any help offered, just feeling a little low after reading through many posts.

jonmeier - email can be pretty useless out here. Better to phone direct. As I said above, Beverly Hills allowed us to keep a dog there so I'm sure they'd let you keep cats. Just make sure you ask first.

Dear Moonbeam

You seem to be one of the few people with real knowledge of keeping pets in Doha. I am hoping you can help me with my situation. I am moving to Doha from the US in October and taking 2 indoor cats with me, and just need a place to stay (like a serviced apartment) that allows cats. I will be staying at a hotel for the first week (with the cats in a kennel) before moving into a serviced apartment. I wont be able to lease a villa until I get my residency visa, which will take a couple months. Do you know of an apartment complex that would accept cats?

I just need to know that there are places that accept cats so I can have peace of mind. My biggest worry is keeping the cats in a kennel for several months; I only want them there for a week, max.

I've contacted the Edzan to no avail, and the Beverly Hills Tower will not return any of my emails.

mmm ours is a definate no no! Its only just been enforced, not sure whether all of the companys' compounds/villas are the same...

Often a compound or apartment block will say "no pets" in the lease, but if you speak to the landlord/management they will make an exception. That is what happened with us.

Best idea I think is a villa, detached from anything else, that way you can enjoy having the dog with you and not have to sneak around and worry!!

yes I know how you feel, they become a part of the family, my little Boo is precious to me but I think it would be unfair to bring him here only to find he may need to go into quarantine for x number of months when we return to the UK.

Good luck with the house hunting, hope you find a pet friendly landlord

xx

My little dog can't be left behind! She is so much a part of our family and we would be devastated if we were forced to leave her behind.

However we would be able to afford a 3 bedroom apartment and I hope we can find one with a landlord who doesn't mind my dog!

Will cross this bridge when the time comes - right now my hubby has been asked to find accommodation that would allow "lilo" my dog.

Life aint easy but one thing I've learnt is that it all pans out in the end! The power of positive thinking!

This seems to be an increasing problem of late, and in fact we've had several animals that were about to be adopted, but when the new owners found out that their landlords do not allow pets, the poor animals lost the chance of a happy and loving home.

Sadly it is a growing trend. Unfortunately this is due to a number of reasons:

1) Irresponsible pet owners, lack of training (dog barks, chews up stuff etc)

2) Landlords not being pet lovers.

3) Neighbors being nosy and not minding their own business

In the US it is actually quite hard to rent a home that allows pets, so this is not a problem just here in Qatar; the difference is that the world is not black and white........there is lots of grey in between. Tenants could be asked to place a security deposit if the landlord wishes? Right?

Why should the owner of a well behaved cat or dog, that does not disturb anyone have to face being evicted if they don't re-home their pet, all because the the above listed have their way.

All I can say is that some landlords and agents are very understanding here, and would advise all expats re-locating to Qatar, to pick housing that allows pets. Even if you don't own a pet! That way, if you ever decide to adopt a cat or dog, you won't face problems later. Trust me, lots of people arrive here thinking they'll never get a pet, but end up coming to our shelter and adopting one of our needy babies. So check first before you sign the contract.

Happy house hunting..............and for all you real estate agents out there using QL as your smoresboard; start getting your landords to agree to pets! It's becoming a trend that ends up with the abandoned animals that suffer.

You can either get your employer to help you with the import permit or get an agent to do it for you.

On the country of origin, you need a letter from the local vet stating the vet is in good health. You also probably need an export permit from the country of origin. Do a search on QL, there are loads of information already published.

Hi Rahsoft

I've got two cats and they live indoors with me. I usually leave the aircon on at about 25 degrees in the living room and usually find them in the bedroom when I get home, so I guess my cats don't mind the heat.

There are a lot of places that do allow cats if you leave them confined to your flat. I got advised not to tell anyone I had cats and simply move them in but I didn't feel comfortable doing that. So I did ask the estate agent about having cats in the flat and he said it was fine. I guess what I'm trying to say is that you can find flats that will allow you to have your cats indoors.

rahsoft -i have a fat, flat faced, fur ball of a persian cat and he is kept indoors and free to roam the villa (not agree with them being caged or confined to a room) and in the summer as long as the A/C's are running that is fine for him and us

life's too short so make the most of it, you only live but once.......

If they're indoor cats then the heat is not a problem because you'll have air conditioning!

hi all

thanks for coming back to me , forgot about the time diff(+5 hrs).apologies

my pets are Cats and they are used to living indoors. my only concern would be heat. they come from the tropics ,but even Qatar may be a little hot for them in the summer. the choice of a villa depends on the budget, but since my wife needs to be near QFC  because of the traffic, we may need to go for an apartment first until I join later. What she had been told is that people smuggle their pets in, however a place with a front desk person(forgot the title) and the stories I hear of nosy landlords going through tenants home put me off risking it. Carrying a pet in a hand luggage into the apartment was a suggestion given to me. Definitely not acceptable

Thanks again

Beverly Hills Tower is near QFC and they allow pets. The lease says no pets, but if you ask they let you. There are several dogs here.

However, I agree with spicemom, you're better of in a villa if you have pets.

Like spicemom said a villa is better to keep a pet, so you will not hinder others .

Better still a stand alone villa(especially for dogs). I think its not a good idea to keep pets in flats, for the neighbours and for the pets too.

good morning rahsoft, prolly you are better off living in a villa instead of an apt (my opinion), hmm the rest were prolly busy last night and now either getting ready for work or already at work (for some), but dont worry they will come back to ya on this later.......

Hi intelligentconv

I have sent you a PM

thanks again

hey everyone else. I thought the QTL people would be falling over themselves to offer advice on this judging by the warm responses to many other issues.

Or is an old issues with pets ?

Maybe QTL could do with a sticky on the subject
