to ship or not to ship
I am relocating to Qatar in August (yes I know it will be much hotter than North Carolina) and would like to send some stuff. However, I am not being provided with a shipping allowance. I have 4 kids and one of them is an infant, so needless to say there is a lot of stuff I would like to send (crib, changer, swing, bikes for older kids and toys--all things not so cheap there). I am not so much interested in shipping furniture since I will have furnished accommodations. Is it crazy expensive to ship? I know I will be there for a year minimum, but I imagine more like 10. What companies do you all recommend? Do they all have to come to the house to "estimate" everything or can I pay by crate? Thanks, Rachel
dont' ship stuff if they do not have it paid for by their company. They sell everything and buy new in the new company. It comes out cheaper in the long run (sad but true)
yes kiwikitten, thats your best and cheapest option....the whole shipping thing is a nightmare...good luck with your move...
Nadt - thanks - we are from Brisbane - yes to ship over with a company was so expensive so will look at the other option of unaccompanied baggage - thanks for your help.
Is this in dollars or in riyals? Also, where in the states do you live?
hi kiwikitten..honestly they are all expensive...the cheapest way to take excess luggage from australia is to send them unaccompanied baggage by the airline you are flying with...just ring the airline before hand and enquire. When we weighed up pro's and cons with containers etc, we found it to be not worth our while. With the amount of money you pay them, not to mention the fact that some stuff might get damaged on its way here, plus the hassle and cost of hiring a company to help you pack your stuff, it was best to just rent a furnished apartment here and buy what we needed. Babies prams, chairs etc are cheaper than australia. Everything we bought was half of what we wouldve paid for a container...If its only clothes you need, send them unaccompanied luggage..
The only thing you need to consider is where will you keep your belongings/furniture in Australia and how much this will cost ie if you are putting it in storage. If you are intending a long stay here it might get costly. We just left our furniture in one of our houses, hence no cost.
Are you from Melbourne.. If you are i can get you a number from a friend of mine who can help you organise unaccompanied luggage or refer you to other shipping companies..
Nadt hi...we are coming from Australia in May and have had a expensive quote from Crown to ship just some personal effects ... do you think that it will be better to just take them as excess baggage....it will only be extra clothes
Yeah, buy the baby stuff here, it isn't really worth shipping it.
lol looks like mom replied u :D

I know form experience when we relocated here from australia once we got qoutes from shipments agencies , we found that the cost of shipping stuff here was very expensive and when we weighed it up, we found that purchasing our kids stuff here worked out to be cheaper and less hassle. We bought our kids things here and rented a fully furnished apartment too.
We are moving this June and we are in the process of getting quotes from moving companies.
Some of them need to come to the house and some don't.
We are shipping the entire house except the appliances; so we are getting a 20 feet container.
these are the companies we have contacted so far:
1. Allied Van Lines. (around 10,000 for 20 feet)
2. Ace. (still waiting for the quote)
3. Crown Moving. (around 8700 + insurance)
4. Dynamic L.A. (around 7000 + insurance)
Good luck
