« Samir Kassir Award for Freedom of the Press »
The search to find the winners of the third "Samir Kassir Award for Freedom of the Press", which will be awarded by the Delegation of the European Commission to Lebanon in association with the Samir Kassir Foundation, has now been launched. Candidates have until 30 March 2008 to apply.
This year, as a sign of the commitment of the European Commission to the promotion of human rights and freedom of expression in the Mediterranean region and the Arab world, the award is open to candidates who are nationals of 8 additional countries: Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
Henceforth, the Samir Kassir Award will be open to 17 countries: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, the Palestinian Territories, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.
It will reward:
1 journalist of the written press (daily, weekly, monthly and online press) whose document (editorial or investigative article) was published between March 15, 2007 and March 15, 2008. The theme of the document must be related to the Rule of Law (good governance, struggle against corruption, freedom of expression, human rights, etc.). The winner will be awarded EUR 15.000.
1 young researcher, aged under 35, whose research document, written during the 2007 academic programme, addresses the Rule of Law or freedom of the press. The winner will be awarded EUR 10.000.
The award ceremony will be held on the 2 June 2008 in Beirut.
