Anybody experienced this lately?

Just wondering if any of you have experienced this same scenario lately. Two days ago, while coming home from work, I saw this car who seem to be lost and was running very slow in the Matar Qadeem area. I was late for dinner and was also driving slow as I'm still in the break-in mode of my new 4WD. But this car looks like it does'nt know where its going so I flashed my lights. While parking my car, I have noticed the same car stopping behind my vehicle. I thought, I have must offended him when I flashed my lights. I stayed in the vehicle and decided to wait until the car leaves. After 5 minutes of waiting, I heard the car honking his horn and calling me. I stepped down from my vehicle and approached the car. I saw an arab guy seating there and I started asking him whats the matter. Then he started telling his story...He said that he came from Saudi by car and got his car damaged. Got it fixed but spent all his money. Now he wants desperately to go back to Saudi but he dont have enough money for petrol and even dinner. So before he can even finish his story, my mind started thinking that this might be another case of illegal begging. So I played along and asked him what I can do to help him. He said that he wants to borrow money from me and let Allah reward me in return. So I told him I have only 100QR in my wallet right now and I would be willing to give it to him as help. He seem to be unhappy with that and told me that he may be needing around 500QR. Sensing this can be a trap, I told him that this is my last money and that if he really need help then I can accompany him to the police. He said police can not help him and he just want to get home. He started crying and begging for help. First time an arab cried in front of me. I was moved but still stand firm that it was my last money. I told him that he can join us for dinner if he is really hungry. He pleaded but after sometime thanked me and left. I did not even bother to check his car plates if its really from Saudi. I told to myself that he must really be needing money whether his story is true or not, and I have contributed to help him. But just in case somebody approach you with the same script then you know what to do.

very nice response.

Offer a meal and offer to help in any way. A person who truely needed help wouldn't refuse such an offer.

Yeah this is a scam, usually by Saudi's or Omani's preying on people's kind hearts.

Giving alms is prohibited. Should you encounter such people, direct them to charity institutions. Though some really need an urgent help be very careful.

Well done! it shows you have a good heart. anything like this, I don't even think twice if they are really in need of help as long as they don't ask me a lot of money. I believe if people want to cheat it's their choice. but sometimes some people are in real need of help but got turned down because of too many cheaters around.

It's great to be loved!

the last time i helped someone in this same situation i got verbally abused by the bloke.lol. i offered QR100 to him and he in return insulted me in saying that i am a very selfish person for not wanting to 'donate' more to he needy and looking at the vehicle i am driving he said that i could have given him more and he even cursed me. wat did i do before he even took the money fr me i simply changed my mind and went on my way amused and smiling. gee amazing wat the world is coming to these days.

life's too short so make the most of it, you only live but once.......

admire your willingness to help people but you are taking a great risk even talking to these people especially getting out of your vehicle and walking back to them. Be very careful around the ATM machines as they will copy your PIN and possibly steal your card.

it happened to me once i tried to offer my help to him without any money, becuse as happa said it'll be a profissoin by the time and people will start workin on it.

and i don't like this kind of traps

cuz he'll make him self poor guy lost his money or spent it over in some emergency case then after u help u ganna be a joke for him and his friend..

so u just have to play around those kind of peopels.

This happened to me twice in 10 days! One was Asian looking and today's (at Villagio) was an Arab.

I gave neither!!! one asked for 5 riyals and the other for a meal or a ride back. I DID NOT give them anything because it will start to be their profession, if it has not been already!!

It was not at all about money for me, but the apparent scam. I was suspicious of each and kept looking at what they were doing!

Also, near one of the money machines, I was watching from a distance, while waiting in line, a very skinny guy keeps repeating the same scene every time a car stopped for transaction!! He pretended to be falling and breaking down on the pavement as if ill or needy for help!!

I could have reported him, but simply couldn't!

Salaam

Personally, I like to give people benefit of the doubt. If I was in your situation, I would probablly just given him my 100 QR even though the story sound made up.

The reason why I think this is probablly a scam, because if he was really in trouble, he would have taken your 100 QRs and then could have went to any charity org and I am sure they would have helped him, if he truly needed the money.
