Qatar's female scientists discover formula for success

SPEED
By SPEED

Doha: A common stereotype about Qataris depicts them as unwilling to take jobs involving long hours, study, focus, sacrifice and, maybe, just normal pay.

But Aisha, Asma, Ajayeb and Maryam, respectively a biologist, virologist, immunologist and biomedical sciences professor, prove that stereotypes often have little basis in fact and that Qatari women are determined to work hard to become not only part of their country's development but also its new scientific community.

The four women were among a significant number of Qatari females of various ages and professions attending the first International Arab Scientists Conference held in Doha last week.

the Qatari women are the future of this country.... I have met some very outstanding ladies - they leave their brothers very much standing in the shadows.

I think a lot of them very much appreciate the development of education here in Qatar and the opportunities available, unlike other Khaleej countries such as Saudi.

I will cut short my criticism if thats what you want and I will get straight to the topic!

How many of you have been involved in research and other stuff? Research is always measured by the number of publications a person has and great researchers are known by their achievements. There are thousands of researchers around the world but their research hasn't produced anything. The world and the people do not estimate the research capabilities of a person by the amount of time he/she spends in the Lab. The General criterion for a researcher is his number of publications or the awards or how useful his discovery, invention, is to the humans.

Cut short: All the Qatari women researchers you mentioned above are doing a good job, no doubt about that. But I will believe in their accomplishments and achievement when I see some results (From their research, publications, awards, etc)

After All as per the dictionary the meaning of Achievement is

"Something accomplished successfully, especially by means of exertion, skill, practice, or perseverance"

When I saw Qatar's 2016 Olymic Logo designed by VCUQ, honestly I was disappointed. Why I did not appreciate it or praise it because it was just not good enough.

I hope you understand what I mean.:)Plus remember Some Criticisms are Constructive Criticisms as well.

Good Day Folks

Perhaps not but at least I will recognise where recognition has been earned.

You see where this country is putting a good foot forward, it should be recognised be it from women or men, fact is though that the women are very proactive in helping to develop Qatar this is a well known fact and the women are overtaking the men as far as intelligence is concerned.

By anonymous• 26 Dec 2007 10:12

Why is it always about how long and how hard these women are working??

I find it an achievenment that Qatar is giving and encouraging the younger generation to support their country. They deserve recognition and in the end it is for the good of mankind.

Although I am an expat myself, I would not compare my working life to the way the Qataris do or do not work. In fact Qatar is facing a vast and important change in a very short time, not fogetting the culture and traditions they have.

capricorian313

Women are not equal to men but often do a far better job than men and are paid much less for the same work and if women do reach sucess they should of course get recognition for it.

I feel sorry that the story meets with such a negative attitude and needless to say always from the same people. I think they are doing a great job to improve and build up a god reputaion in their own country.

I bought the grapes thinking they'd be sweet but they are sour as hell.

The problem is that you can sell even low quality products if you have a good advertisement campaign. As some people would buy anything that sounds good in the advertisement.

"Anything which is shiny, bright and seductive in the advertisement so surely dark and sinister in real life."

I guess no one knows what really an achievement is. Being a mother, father, is not an achievement. Being a good mother or a good father is definitely an achievement.

No hard feelings for what I am going to say now.

quoting Diamondgirl

"Can't you just celebrate her career before taking the usual swipe at Qatar and Qataris? It's not that common yet in Qatar for women to be in positions such as hers."

So I guess when a Qatari Lady becomes a house maid, we ought to celebrate? After all it is also a career oriented profession! And it is also not commeon. Even Queen Elizebeth has butlers (female ones) and it is considered an honor to work as a maid for the Royals. The pay is also good..

Lets celebrate Frog_, we should publish letters of appreciation in the Gulf-Times in her honor, Hell we should give that lady the highest honor for working.

By diamond• 25 Dec 2007 18:45

I think you're being a bit hard on her Frog.

"For two years I did not go for a holiday because we have too much work and our laboratory cannot shut down. I work from 8am until late in the evening, sometimes even during the holidays," said Aisha Al Ghafri, supervisor of the biomedical services laboratory at the Army Medical Services."

lol , It's fuuny how her description matches with that of an expatriate typical working day :)So many people do not go on holidays for two years , maybe more .

"Ninety per cent of my students are female, maybe because women are more suitable for jobs that require study, research, patience, focus and sacrifice"

What a genius finding :) "more suitable" :)

Eventually, I think Qatari women are doing well whether inside or outside homes. However, the article sounds like a feminist "propaganda" compaign showing some women as exceptional because they are doing what would be considered as "routines" elsewhere :)

As per my openion, amid discrimination (it's a disease in around the world), this excellent achievement should be advertised. They are doing great job.... it means, it's better to display to the world of people who hates women based on gender. But it's up to ones understanding.

Science does not has any boundaries, religion and it is definitely not gender biased.

So all these terms arab scientists, african scientist, male scientists or female scientists is a load of crap. Science works for the betterment of the human race and the ultimate goal of the all the scientists is the same.

Atmost it should be that scientists in Qatar have discovered...whatever they have invented or discovered.
