Thinking of moving to Qatar
Hi all
I am a Fire Officer in the UK and had initially applied for a Chief Fire Officer job with QP at grade 15(16-18,000QR per month plus 11,100QR per month housing allowance)
I am wondering if there is any possibility of negotiating the offer as I actually get paid more than this in my current job in the uk and although I would be willing to move to Qatar,I feel the incentive would have to be greater. I need a fresh challenge and feel this would be ideal for me, only if the salary was right.
Any comments or opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
two thumbs up for saint's comment.

Oh yes, getting all your salary tax free will certainly make a difference - but then on the flip side, there is no social security except for the gratuity ....
The salary seems to be OK - the house allowance is slightly on the lower side considering the current rental costs in Doha.

Well, if the salary offer is lower than your current salary. You have to consider other things, like the tax. There is no tax here in Doha, tha salary that you will have will be your net salary. The gasoline is cheaper here than in UK. Yes, the appartments here are way so expensive. If you have childrens, I heard the company will provide allowance for the education of your childrens. You need to clarify everything with the QP HR before you make the decision of relocating here in Doha.
Thanks to all who have given me their opinion on this dilemma.
All comments have been valid and helpful and are greatly appreciated.
I will keep in touch and let you all know the outcome.
Thanks again.
after 18 months solo. I have kids aged 19 and 17. A decent house (depending on your lifestyle) will be at least QR 15 000. I am paying QR 16 500 but the house is huge - lifestyle issue.
Schools - you might end up on a waiting list for 2009 unless you are prepared to compromise on the standard.
So think carefully. It's a tough decision and I hope you choose wisely.

QP pays for Children education for upto 4 children ... recently they have increaced pay 5000 plus for all the level staff (can you imagine a junior staff level get paid 7300 for housing as per new scale with other benifits incl schooling for kids)
Scottie ... my point of view your perk is not bad ... since you beign a western will be paid western allowance of around QR4000 spearately ... check with QP HR for the benifits and recent increase in Housing and other allowances ;-)
After all decision is yours....
cheers

I agree with others, the salary and housing is not good enough. Your children are secondary school age, so the costs are more, and thats if you get a place.Housing in a compound for a family you need at least 15000 QR/month.I would definately negotiate for much higher, or stay at home. Best of luck.
The salary and benefits you're being offered are not good, with a wife and two kids in school to pay for, 18k will get you nowhere. 11k accommodation allowance will get you a scruffy two bed flat in a cr*p area.

you look at the money that you put in your pocket at the end of the day, not the total of your salary.
If you get 5 million in the UK and end up with 5 pounds in your pocket then...
I don't know what grade 15 means, however if you are very experienced, I'd ask for more benefits.

I was thinking no 40% tax, No NI, housing allowance which means I could either sell or rent out my house in the UK but I am giving up a company pension which I cannot get until I am 60.
I have 2 kids of 15 and 11 and although it says there is assistance with school fees, how much would I have to contribute to the fees?
I don't know your circumstances in UK, none of us do, but if my husband was earning more there, than he is here, I would stay there in UK and maybe buy a holiday home in the sun.
Tax aspect, OK, so you earn effectively more here. One third? not sure what one had to pay in UK at the moment, but I guess NI stamp comes off as well.
Salary and housing sounds ok. Not sure if you have kiddies - schools cost.
Be good if you could let out your home in UK whilst here too!

No i'm not 'taking the mick'- I do get more than that as I am high up in the UK Fire Service and I agree with missmoneypenny that I am considering the tax free aspect but still think it's a huge decision to make and one that will take some time and thought.
Thanks for the comments.
I'm saying that if he's getting paid more in UK, then why come here!
I was quoting him.
Huh ? Jauntie ? What are u saying ?

gimme a break
If the pay isn't higher than one ur getting in the UK, then it's not worth coming.
"Anything which is so shiny, bright and seductive in the advertisement so surely dark and sinister in real life. So beware"
Does the fact that its tax free count for something though?
