Heard some un-official news that someone was alledgedly killed by a shark in Doha waters, not sure where, but I think it was last weekend.....anyone got the real juice on this
Shark attacks have made the news worldwide; no matter where they happen, with or without fatalities; the horror and tragedy surrounding them are facts.
Well first of all for spearing while scuba-ing that's very frowned upon... and i advise you to at least try the basic of free diving then start spearfishing.... Anyway the best shop for spearfishing gear (which is to one of my friends) is located in soug wakif and is very easy to find. check www stateofqatar dot com and you'll see the directions to reach the shop there. you can also see some of our clips and pix overthere.
Again just to remind you that spearfishing while scuba is very frowned upon. The team I dive with might scuba and spearfish occasionally but that's only in deep waters and extreme currents (talking about depths of 40m+) whereas most of our dives and spearfish are free-dive and remember 1 thing in spearfishing: ecologic hunting, that's shot the fish you are willing to eat only and spare those which are too small and might not have yet reached maturity.
Can you advise me where do you buy your spearfishing gear from. I recently got my Padi certification (Open water) and would like to get into spearfishing. Any clubs around for like minded sports enthusiast.
alija- yes we were camping at inland sea that week end and yes we saw the boat going up and down as though lookin for something. thank you for telling the whole story and thank god the rumors were well just rumors....till this day we still go to the same spot for our camping and swimming .
life's too short so make the most of it, you only live but once.......
If what you mentioned is true then it was probably me who started that thing. We were 4 free-divers at the entrance mouth of inland sea and decided to swim to a spot that is around 2.5km offshore (we have already swam much farther than this spot before and swam to this spot couple of time too)... but due to the strong current we all got separated... so each one was by his own.... so while swimming back to the shore I spotted a large bull shark that just swam by me.... After reaching back to shore, and as it was getting too dark, and my buddies didn't show up, I decided to call the coast guard and inform them that my 3 buddies got separated from me (I knew that they are alright but I just took a precautionary measure).... and that's when they sent a boat to look for them (since 2 of the 3 buddies in water were Qataris so they didn't hesitate a second) but fortunately my buddies had made it back to the shore by that time but were simply drifted further down in the inland sea which delayed them to get back to the spot on shore where we decided to meet up after the dive....
Unfortunately the story made it to the newspaper the next day with plenty of exaggeration and bullsh!t (the funniest thing is that they mentioned that 4divers were stranded in the sea and 1 diver got drifted back the shore and was unconscious but then regained his consciousness and called back the coast guard which picked up the stranded divers lost in the open sea) CRAP X CRAP as usual....
and btw; concerning bullsharks, I only know 2 reported cases for which they were observed: one for which I was blessed to observe one in its natural habitat, and one which was observed by diver trying to fix a line in an oilrig by the north field.
Sunshine how are you today, seen the sandstorm outside and they say very hot indeed. Such sh**** I just got my car cleaned yesterday after one month lol lol lol
snowstorm, is nothing special accept the funny shark behaviour who trying to adopt the GodFather movie action from become very serious mafia to very funny family conflict. have you watched it??
yep yep it was last yr we were outcamping at the inland sea when one of the guys withus got a call fr one of the guys received a call fr one of the tour operators that this incident had happened and for us to be careful......so still dunno if this is legit or not
life's too short so make the most of it, you only live but once.......
Guys I've been diving (mostly free-diving), spearfishing and all sort of water activities since ages here.... and I only saw 2 sharks in my life here: 1black tip and 1 bull shark (quite a large one).... the blacktip was on the west coast of Qatar (and at around 700m offshore) and the bullshark was at around 2.4km offshore at the entrance to the inland sea (at some reef in that area) and in both cases i was diving alone... other than that I with my group have dived around oilrigs, wrecks and as far as 140km offshore and never ever got into any situations with any shark or whatsoever (and we have dive logs by the hundreds)... however we got some sharks by line while trolling (but that's at places such as oilrig and halool island which are quite far offshore....)
So dont worry about sharks, as u have at least 10,000x more time being hit by a reckless driver on ur way to the beach than being bitten by a shark..
as for shark species in Qatar: then u have blacktips reef sharks, bronze whaler, great hammerhead, scalloped hammerhead, bull shark, spotted shark, hardnose shark, and tiger shark. Of those, only bull sharks and tiger sharks are known for their aggressivity, and there has never been any fatality (worldwide) with a great hammerhead but due to its large size it should be respected....
and about the guy killed by shark in doha: CRAP x CRAP (never happened)...
There are some dangerous shark species present in our waters here (tiger, hammerhead etc.) but the chance of a beach go-er meeting them is very very slim. Divers have more of chance but still very low, you see them occasionally in deep water wreck diving. Rigs also attract with food and human waste being an easy meal. Shallow waters you can get black tips especially around tutrtle nest hatching season (again an easy meal) but they are qite scared of humans.
There is no real need to worry here in Qatar. There are other nasties that will cause you pain that are more likely than a shark bit.
we have sharks here in Doha, but those are feeding on the other fishes and not human flesh. There are different kind of sharks, but the dangerous ones can be counted on your hand. We are also in the middle of the west side coast, but that does not make it California :)

The most dangerous of Sharks are the TIGER Sharks and they DO NOT lurk in these waters. However, the main cause for shark attacks are cos they are either irritated by the foll: Blood, Glint of metal on water) .. PLay safe and take care
roycef1: I would place it under falls alarm or rumour.
Sharks in general don't like very warm waters too much... I would assume there are no sharks in shallow waters, telling from the current shore temperatures.
Further out it might be possible.
There are sharks is the arabian sea, thats a fact. The ones I saw so far are by far to small to real harm...
but then if you get bitten the wrong way, you might still bleed to death.
I have been diving all around the country and I have not seen any sharks near the beaches.
The other thing with sharks is, that they are mainly hunting at night. So less of risk for the sun hungry beach goer.

In terms of aggression, I think it's the Great White, the Grey and then the Tiger shark right?
Tiger sharks? I thought Great White Sharks were the most feared. Aren't they perfect eating machines?

Tiger sharks hunt at daybreak and sunset. Those are the worst times to swim.

Sounds like another urban myth. I'll wait until I see the pictures.

Hope you didn't mean human blood when you mentioned of 'the real juice'. LOL
If there was any truth in this story, it should have been out by now. As far as I know, Doha waters are pretty safe of Sharks.
