Moving to Qatar from the US

My husband might be getting a job in Qatar. We have a 7, 5 & 1 year old that would be going with us. My 7 year old is very involved into football and my daughter is involved in cheerleading. Does anyone know what youth sports they have there?

Things I am looking to find out:

-Youth Sports
-Where to find a place to live (can I find this online)
-Where can I look at cars to buy before I ever get there
-Is there a website for the american compound

Actually coona** by marriage. :) Married a guy from Covington, LA. I'm a redneck from AL. We lived in Covington before moving over. Hope you do get to come for a visit. Take care.

Not to hijack - we are also from Louisiana. I hope to be visiting again sometime in November. Nice to see another coona** there.

Hi Lanyce -

No youth football here but there's baseball, swimming, karate, soccer and more I'm sure. My kids are a bit young for this yet.

No really good real estate websites but they are improving. There aren't really just "American" compounds. Many are mixed but certainly some have more westerns. Check out www.alasmakhrealestate.com. They have got a few pictures on there just to give you an idea. Also check out -www.alfardanrealestate.com

See Alfardan Gardens. One of the best compounds in Doha. Many others like this with amenities such as pools (resort style almost), restaurant, small grocery, playground...they come in all types.

Be sure to check out www.expatwoman.com on the Qatar chatboard. Loads of moms with kids your kids age. Best wishes with the move. PM me if you want to ask anything else. We moved here 2+ years ago from Louisiana.

Lanyce, I assume you mean gridiron football and not soccer. There are no football programs there. Don't know about the cheerleading. There is baseball for ages 4 to 18. This is open to boys and girls. The baseball is not through the school is a little league type program. The contact information that I got out of Marhaba (a publication that is a must when you get there) Ed Dixon at 974-556-0975. This was listed in the Spring/Summer 2007 Marhaba. I am sure the newer version has come out by now. I am still in the states but my husband is now working in Doha. One of the reasons I stayed back was because of football. My son is a Freshman in high school and has played since he was 9 years old. Not to mention I think the high school coach would have kidnapped him if I had decided to leave. They have been watching him for a while.

However, there are tons of other sports that your son could participate in. Sports are a really big deal in Qatar. The American School has an awesome track team from what I've been told.

I think you can find a lot of useful info there as well. Similar to the Qatar Living site.

Best of luck. If I can help with anything else please feel free to send a Private message. Not living in Doha but have lived in the Middle East in the past.
