"If you don't like it here, then leave!" lol

I am finally leaving Qatar this weekend, after two months of struggle. I am going back to Dubai, but I decided I wont stay long there either. The living and working conditions I had here made me realize that it was really really not worth it!

What the hell am I doing in this country (and Dubai)?! I am an engineer and I'm living in a room- not a house along with 4 other people, being paid "according to nationality" not ability, qualification, and competency, and being away from the things that matter to me most?!

I have the qualifications, education and experience yet I've seen enough to conclude that it really is based on nationality (good on you white people! they worship you here!... and anywhere else for that matter) that you get paid very. Anyone who denies this fact would be a hypocrite I think.

Ok, so I am going back to my country, the Philippines. A lot of jobs there now. The pay may not be as "high" compared here but I am sure it will be very very worth it. I have my family and friends, my dog, a culture that easy going and not backward, bland food (how I long for bland-tasting food!), and the list goes on.. what else could I ask for?

I was bitter, yes, for all the inequities I've seen and gone through here, but I am very very happy now. I honestly am, well, thankful to this country and Dubai for opening my eyes to see what really should matter in life. I'm glad it did not take me a year for it would be such a waste! It shouldn't take a year anyway.

If I ever hear that "If-you-don't-like-it-here-then-leave!" line again, my reply would just be a wide smile :)

Goodluck to everyone and I wish you all a good life!

I'm sorry that you had a bad experience.

But at the end of the day generalization has to stop.

My father's business hires Indians, Philipinos, Chinese, Palestinians, Japanese etc... and they are all treated well.

They are all given their own car, my father give's them days off when they need it, and he's always been friendly to his staff.

At the end of the day, the people who have bad experiences are more vocal than those that have good experiences.

When was the last time you watched the news and saw:

BREAKING ANNOUNCEMENT!!!!!!

Everything's GREAT! We're All HAPPY :D:D:D:D:D:D

I think I reached my Qatar tolerance and I've had it...but can't go home just like that....responsibilities, obligations, etc. are the things that tied me here till a couple more months, I hope....

Let be the lechon, crispy pata, tocino, and buko pie greet you when you go back....Buti ka pa!!!

Good luck, kabayan...see you in Manila!!!!

Kinda know wher u'r at.

In my country the roles have been totally reversed, so its still appartheid undercover. The colour-skin man is first in line for the jobs.. next the colour-skin women.. then white women, and at the bottom of the food chain is the white man.

So the white families are leaving their OWN country and finding contract jobs anywher else in the world, a popular one being in Oman, and the middle east in general plus other countries too. Many are people we know. They dont get all the top jobs. They often take what they can get to support their families

I do agree with 'Withnail' we shouldnt think its just the white man, not to generalise the situation at all

Blessings to you and your family

i certainly don't deny that there is a significant level of racism here, but to say that whites are in better positions only because of nationality is simply not true.

there are certainly specific examples of whites being higher up the chain that they deserve to be, or of non-whites being passed over for promotions they deserve, but that's not the whole story.

i have worked with finance professionals from developing countries who on paper look just as good as me, if not better, but when it came to the soft skills (communication, interpersonal, organization, customer focus, being polite, creativity, process improvement, etc.) they couldn't compete. i have also worked with some who were very talented and taught me a lot.

denying that there is racism here (or many places) is hypocritical, but so is claiming that racism is the only reason why whites get ahead.

maybe your white boss didn't deserve to be your boss. maybe you got screwed over and should have been promoted. maybe you're not as good as you think you are. i don't know the particulars of your case, but i know that some ridiculously high percentage of people (over 90% i think) when asked think they do a great job, when clearly that can not be the case.

good luck to you back home.

yuj,We all have our share of experiences. I’ve been to most Arab countries and I can rely on your lament. Maybe I’ve seen worst, but for these entire events there is a good side to it.

Maybe now I can say that my tolerance is higher. Good luck to your future Endeavor.
