Can you get pedigree dogs in Qatar?

If you are going to get a schnauzer from either the US or UK, you might want to look into the quarantine requirements of bringing a pet from the UK...I know that there is absolutely no quarantine on pets imported from the USA as long as the pet is fully vaccinated (as age-appropriate, of course, if the dog is still too young for rabies it is ok as long as you get it done here at the appropriate age). The last I heard, the UK had much stricter quarantine requirements, although I don't know if they apply to export or only to import.

Thanks everyone. I know it is always good to adopt rather then buy but the schnauzer is a compromise. We lost our schnauzer last year(died) after having him 10 years. He was her baby! Anyway when I sprang the newsm that we were leaving her home state for Qatar she was very sad. The Schnauzer was a pick me up....so I will look into getting one before we leave or in my home country of the UK.

I just had one other thought -- stock up on your pet supplies (shampoos, conditioner, grooming tools, bed, crate, lots of toys, even food) in the States and ship them with your other belongings. Pedigree is available in most grocery stores and Iams is available in MegaMart grocery stores, and the vets carry Eukanuba and Royal Canin, but it is much more expensive than in the States, so it will be worth it to bring a good supply with you. Also, toys and other pet supplies are available at some of the vets' offices, but since they have to import everything, the cost is also passed on to the consumer (although I do not think they try to make a huge profit off of these items). Especially if you are getting a puppy, whether you get it in the States or wait and adopt a dog here, it is always good to have lots of extra chew toys and items for different stages of life as they go from their puppy to adult teeth. There is no Petsmart or anything like it here :-(

Thanks for adding that point about taking the dog back with you, Moonbeam...I love my dog so much that it doesn't even occur to me to leave her behind, I can never understand when people leave the country without taking their pets or finding appropriate homes for them, it is too sad!

I agree with the post above, but be prepared to bring the dog back with you when you decide to go back home. Too many dogs are left behind sadly, and there are always dogs looking for homes here. Qatar Animal Welfare Society has had to close it's doors and it was the ONLY place in Qatar helping strays. There are no registered humane societies here and so if you really want a dog, maybe you can adopt rather than buy? I have two rescues of my own, as do many others on QL. Rescues are more loyal, more thankful and I can attest to that. Plus you'll be helping a dog in desperate need.

Adopt don't buy. :)

There are lots of wonderful dogs here who need homes, but there aren't a lot of breeders, so if your wife only wants a pedigree schnauzer, I would suggest you get your dog in the States ASAP (so that it has plenty of time to adjust to you, be potty trained, etc. before the long plane ride).

One other thing to consider: I do not know what your housing accommodations will be here in Doha, but some compounds do not allow dogs (or dogs over a certain weight), so you may want to check on that before finalizing your housing arrangements.

Just FYI, if you go to the Qatar Groups tab at the top of the Qatar Living page, there is a group that discusses animal and pet issues, with links to the Qatar Pet Relocators firm, information for pet import, veterinary care, etc. I arrived here last year with a puppy and haven't had any problems. It is good that you are arriving in October, because many airlines will not ship animals in the warm-weather months for the health and safety of the animal (something to consider whenever you leave Qatar, if your contract ends in the summer) Good luck, and enjoy your new dog!
