Going to India - what should I buy and carry for some monitary benefit?
By PositivelyRaj •
Hi,
Going to India shortly. If I convert QR to INR its a loss of 2-3%. Any profitable options - any items including gold / laptop that would make sense buying here and selling in India? How the customs duty would work out? Help me (and the QL Indian community) benefit from your expertise...
If you are going under TR (Transfer to residence)the following items are allowed duty free :
1. Video Cassette Recorder/Video Cassette Player/Video Television Receiver/Video Cassette Disk Player.
2. Washing Machine.
3. Electrical or Liquefied Petroleum Gas Cooking Range.
4. Personal Computer (Desktop Computer).
5. Notebook Computer (Laptop Computer).
6. Domestic Refrigerators of capacity up to 300 litres or its equivalent.
The following items command a 15.3% duty provided the total cumulative amount doesn't exceed rupees 5 lakhs
1. Colour Television (cheaper in Qatar including LCD TV)
2. Digital Video Disc Player
3. Home Theatre System - cheaper in Qatar
4. Dish Washer - cheaper in Qatar
5. Music System - cheaper in Qatar
6. Air-Conditioner.
7. Domestic refrigerators of capacity above 300 litres or its equivalent.
8. Deep Freezer.
9. Microwave Oven.
10. Video camera or the combination of any such video camera with one or more of the following goods, namely:-
(a) Television Receiver;
(b) Sound recording or reproducing apparatus;
(c) Video reproducing apparatus.
11. Word Processing Machine.
11. Fax Machine.
12. Gold or Silver , in any form , other than ornaments.
For all the above items you need to be eligible for TR. Lot of government sites which states the rules and regulations of coming under TR.

we recently lived in india, i wouldn;t bother buying things to sell in india to be honest, everything loses vale there very quickly.
all i can remember about customs is it took 15 hours to get out stuff that we had sent over and they tried to bribe us out of alot of money, so my best advice for that if you know someone who can help bargain them down. also the paper work is extensive and long.
if i can help you out with anything else just let me know :-)
