After 3 months in Doha!

Glam
By Glam

I have now been in Doha for 3 months and this has been the most lonely, isolated time of my life. My employer gave the impression that there was an active social life amongst the people I work with and I would meet lots of new people. This has turned out to be untrue. Everyone seems to have their own circle of friends and there is no roon for any more. 2 women actually told me they have enough friends and no time for any more!!!

Part of the problem may be that I am a single woman in her 40's with no children. I have been told I am attractive ( I used to do modelling). I therefore don't get invited to any social events by young people or by married couples - and I understand the reasons why.

I read about places to go to and I go to most of them alone. I don't have the confidence to walk into bars alone, however.

I would love to meet some people that would be happy for me to join in with them. It is not easy for a single woman of my age to be in Doha - in fact on many occasions I find it quite hostile

I've been here just over 2 months and feel similar Glam.

I have always kind of gotten used to being alone generally but there is something about Doha that magnifies feelings by a significant amount.

Hey Vasquez and Derry Boy, I started a Thursday Night out thread in the Social group, so sign up there. I'm thinking Rydges, but it's still up in the air.

Derry boy, are you paranoid? Don't think that just because people haven't written to you, you are being sent to the boonies as a social outcast. :) Really, I'm just messing with you.

Guys (to you to Glam) you just have to smile and strike up a conversation with someone you might find interesting. Most of us walk through our daily routines just trying to meld in the background. The only way someone will notice you is if you stand on the table and laugh to hearts content. Now I don't mean that literally, but you catch my drift right?

I have made some very nice friends here in Doha. But I think that has more to do with actually getting out there and doing stuff that interests me, and these friends happen to walk into my life.

I'll give you an idea. Xena is very active here in Doha. And the nice thing about her is that she doesn't limit herself to 'one' kind of people. You'll find her at get togethers on Animal welfare, for example, which is where I met her. As a mom, I don't really go out to clubs anymore, but that doesn't mean I can't find friends.

So get out there, and make yourselves heard with a smile on your face, and people will come.

I had the same issue when I arrived and found a lot of the English I work with, stuck in their little click. Eventually over time I found friends and settled down (as much as you can here). It does get better in time....just give it a chance.....the key is to travel as often as you can.

I talked to myself LONG before I moved to Doha. Seriously though Derry boy, never fear, you've found QL now. :D

Perhaps we should get a social group thing together this weekend? Who's still in town, I know Joe is gone home and Ducky has left, is Xena back? Greeker is here, Manutbl, JonB, WhoMe, scottishlad, Bennis, Cornellian.....Who else is still in town? I might actually be able to go out this weekend.

I guess just hang in there. Most of my social group is with my workmates (QP) but there are certainly other groups. I'm a Canadian and the Canadian group is doing some interesting (and some bizarre) things, "Turkey Curling" anyone.

There are large groups of EXPATS here and there must be a group of Brits (I think you're British). Talk to the people at the British Embassy and see what they have to offer.

There are also groups like Toastmasters and the Geographical (Historical?) Society that does interesting things along with some dive groups.

You need to look under groups, and then look at social group. It's been a little quiet lately because the social guru Xena had to run home to South Africa, but once she gets back I'm sure it will be going full swing again. :)

Join the social group here on QL. I've found the people I met to be really friendly, and defintely some of the nicest people in Doha (because I know what you mean about people here not being very friendly).

I know it took me at least 6 months to start meeting people here and really about a year before I met some genuine nice people.

I've met apple, azzi, junarc, cygnet, daylight, pwb78, emcee in person. They are soooo friendly and accommodating. Suddenly, my weekdays got busy.

I've got friends on line like E46M3, johny boiei and DaRude. PM here, PM there.

Some people played bowling on friday. Some are meeting up for coffee in the evenings.

They had a going away dinner for Ducky.

Check out the QL Groups, and you might see something that's interesting for you.

I'm pretty sure you'll gonna get along with us here. Get it on!

Cheers,

Shav

...There are groups of QLers who meet on a semi regular basis. I've been here for months but it's taking getting together with the QL folks to really get me going out. I'm really not much of a boozer anymore so the bars mostly just bore me.

Welcome and good luck...
