moving to Qatar, need basic info on rental and living trends
Hi all,
I am moving to Qatar from the first week of May. Later my wife will join me. At this stage, I just need some basic info on rentals and what I need to consider before I move?
By going through the forum topis and posts, I can generally say that the rentals can be anywhere between 4K - 8K QR. But how long can it take before one can find a decent place? What is the common way securing housing in Doha? Agent fee ? Deposits? Advance rents? Usual contract terms? It will be good if anyone could provide me with a agents number, so I can proceed with notifying my requirements earlier.
I dont expect the company to arrange a short hotel stay for me in the begining. Can anyone also, advice a budget hotel or a hostel to stay in for a few days? If possible, contact information ?
I also came to know that Doha does not have sufficient public transportation. How high are the cab fares in Doha? Is it expensive cabbing to work daily??
Please do let me know anything you feel important and I should keep in mind before i move next week.
Thanks and Regards.

I'm not so hot on rentals but I do know an internet search will give you some agents.
I've got a list of cheap hotels (under QR500) on my blog (http://qatarvisitor.blogspot.com/2006/10/cheap-qatar-hotels.html) - but I posted it a few months ago so it may be out of date now. I believe many are due to be demolished in the near future.
You can get to most place in Doha for under 12 riyals in a taxi. With buses and an increased number of taxis on the road, the situation is a lot better than it was a few months ago. A friend looked into renting a car and could have got one in the region of QR1,800/month.
Bear in mind that the government and some companies often do not pay wages until you have been working for them for two months.
Good luck!
